2024 Finlandia Trophy Rhythm Dance

Breakdown of marks

Monaco and Ukraine judges had Fear/Gibson into the lead
Norway judge had them third behind the Finns
Taschlers third for Monaco and Ukraine. 7th for the Norway judge (and 6th for the Canadian judge)
Australian judge had the Brown 3rd

Does anyone else midd Hubbell/Donahue and Papadakis /Cizeron?
Do I miss Patrick Chan ? Do I miss Virtue and Moir, Weaver and Poje, the Shibs ?

We can be fond of skaters of the past. It's okay to mention them or to compare them ( I just said in the women's thread that Rino is my new Patrick). At the same time, there were plenty of great skaters at this event and I am iffy with a sentence like this, without any other context or explanation. It negates the work and talent of the current generation. It also doesn't take into account of the stupid rhythm dance theme they have been given this year.

Piper and Paul first teamed up in 2011.... and they are still going.... that year, they couldn't skate internationally because Piper needed her release from the USFed. but they were 3rd at Canadian Nationals. That was a few years before Papadakis and Cizeron were skating seniors...Piper went through cancer scare. They have battled what I would call "love-hate" from the judges and even from some fans... They are not from a famous training camp, have not won any olympic medals, and yet, are still coming to fight with daring programs every year. I think they deserve their own cheers, for the path they have traced themselves. (I could do this for a bunch of other current teams too but since they were not competing this weekend, I will just stick to that)

The alcohol is that strong in Finland. So the British judge put Lilah and Lewis ahead for skating skills. How is this possible ? Am I crazy to think that Paul is a better skater than Lewis and Piper a better skater than Lillah ?

Don't complain or next time British Fed will nominate Nicholas Russell who will put G/P into 5th.

Few words from biased me, so take it with dose of distance.

Unfortunately, Pinchuk/Pogorielov were just clumsy/messy too much. I hoped they would continue Nepela trajectory where they were somewhat solid and this RD just looked better. Overall, this RD is a bit of mish-mash, combining few styles so-so, instead of leaning towards one style and doing it well.

Yuka and Juho were lives of the party and they truly made me smile after small crying jag out of self-disappointment about crowns' delivering. They are not like the most refined technically skaters, BUT they are doing whatever they need to get the technique going while maintaining that superb showmanship. The showmanship that feels just...organic to me. This is not a pose, a character - they are just stars, shining brightly and enjoying crowd, music, dance and being together in all of it. Loved hot pink on Yuka and quirky camp-ness of Juho's get-up.

I'm kinda soft towards Zingas/Kolesnik...they look GOOD on the ice and he is one of the best partners in ID today imho. The way he leads is just so tasty for watching. I've enjoyed that Bee Gees moment, they sold it well.

As I said about Taschlers - the team that truly needs to be seen live to fully appreciate the skill, speed, coverage, unison. They are a treat in terms of tech stuff, but I wish the packaging was less generic (at least I see it like that for some reason) and 'princessy' (especially when it comes to costumes). I feel like they need to figure out who they want to be on the ice, finding their own way of doing things instead of somewhat safe formulas (Shibutanis did it, so I think it can be done).

Juulia and Matthias are one of my faves, so this is totally biased take. They WORKED since Nepela and it truly shows - I was in Bratislava and I'm here, so I think I can say that they really want to turn things around and push themselves. RD looked just so picturesque for some reason: Juuilia in her best 'Anna Cappellini School of Skirt' dress, with that polka dot and pink mixed giving off vintage vibe, Matthias focused, but also in the performance, lots of r'n'r references in choreo, quality postures and carriage. It was good to see them bouncing back strongly.

Lilah and Lewis felt tentative for me - it's obviously well rehearsed number that is all about that ex peogram-like quality, but I feel they wanted to make sure nothing like in practice will repeat (I also saw them during morning practice skating separarely for some part, especially twizzles). The program gets the crowd going, but I honestly find it tad repetitive (wish more Superstition was used...) and don't kill me, but I wish costumes were different or more like in different colors. I would really like to see pop of color, either Lewis shirt or Lilah's dress...Right now it all just melts with each other.

Aside from dying inside from nerves, Piper and Paul's RD took me in some happy place. Simply as that. For me personally, their ability to reinvent and sort of embody a particular feel/theme/character is second to none and this RD truly stands out this season in terms of just being different. It was beyond amazing to pick Coach Carol's mind a bit about their programs and approach yesterday when she found me (!!!) to have our annual Finnish chat (3rd year in a row, let's go! I was also named 'P² advisors' today and couldn't be more proud lol) and to see it in person just made me understand them more. I really dig both Scuba suit Barbie and Ken and bathing suit in stripes/colorful popsicles costumes (Scuba suits were on practice earlier today), it's fun, on theme and they look just like dolls for me. Piper and pink is match made in heaven. What I like the most was ease and relaxed feel that program seems to have, the transitions reflecting theme in a cheeky way, the plunge into the lift, overall attention to detail.
They truly soothed a bit my self-disappointment today (it was best that RD was last lol). But tomorrow is another day, new chance to show my gratitude and decorate talented heads of Ice Dancers and Pairs.

at the same time, it's his choice you know.... He likes her. He likes training with her. He probably believes she has the talent to get there in a few years, when it really matters, because right now, the top it stacked anyway. So I am not going to pity him. His decision.
They are a couple off the ice. And Emi has admitted to stress about twizzles and being troubled with imposter syndrome.

Hope they have a strong free tomorrow.

Few more words because I forgot about Hannah and Ye.
I'm starting to wonder if the vehicle/program/music/style chosen there could be a problem. For starters, I totally see them pulling off a great Disco program, but this one they have now is imho subpar. From the music (wish I will survive was used in different version and/or other pieces around it reconsidered) to choreo (I honestly find it more lacklustre than not...).
They are brilliant performers and it pains me to see them struggle points-wise.
Waiting eagerly for Cruella tomorrow (and manifestating them picking up Dalmatian crowns!)

I got it but cannot insert pictures here with these equipments I have here with. If you have ig, go to watch Piper's stories so you will find it, It should be there until tomorrow morning European time. It is a pity there is no picture from the back of the costumes.

I didn't think Piper and Paul's costumes could get worse.

I was wrong.

Someone tell me if they were any good, because I REFUSE to pain my eyeballs by watching more than 2 seconds of the individually-godawful-and-clashing-with-each-other sartorial mess.

Emilea is a very good skater and holds her own with Vadym. She is no way an imposter, she found her way to this level and partnership on her own merit and should hold her head high. About mistakes today, everyone has days they want to forget. From what I have seen mistakes are not common with this team. Have a good nights sleep and get up and show us your lovely free dance.

I thought the costumes were fun and fit their California beach style/Barbie & Ken concept very well.
