2024 Bosphorus Cup | Nov 25 - Dec 1

2024 Bosphorus Cup is set to take place Nov 25 - Dec 1, 2024, in Istanbul, Turkey. The competition will feature the Singles (Women and Men) in the Novice, Junior and Senior categories, and the Ice Dance disciplines in the Junior and Senior categories.

The event will be conducted in accordance with the ISU Constitution and General Regulations, ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules for Single & Pair Skating, Technical Rules for Ice Dance, and relevant ISU Communications.

Anyway, we start with a 5 hour long marathon. 45 Advanced Novice girls.

By the way, of the 53 girls originally entered for the second marathon of the day, the 7 hour long Junior Ladies SP, there has only been one skater that has dropped out. And it didn't take me long to figure out who that skater was, because it is one of my kids. Zhasmin SHLAGA (KGZ).

That's ominous. Second skater in, and we've lost the picture on the camera in the results area.

Never fear, it was back by the time the third skater arrived for her results.

Well, it only took us until the fourth skater to get our first "Voilà" of the event.

And it sounds awful with the echoes in the arena.

But the little girl skated well.

She goes into the lead.

So many warhorses so far. "Voilà"; "Skyfall"; "Candyman"; and just there now "Tango De Roxanne".

And it was with the last of those that Skater #8 took the lead away from Skater #4.

I wonder how many more times today we will hear those songs...

Aha! We have a withdrawal. Skater #41 is missing.

Well, she isn't actually missing. She's skating in Basic Novices at the Santa Claus Cup in around a couple of hours from now!

How that wasn't picked up on before the draw was done here, I do not know!

The last of the international skaters, Daria TROI (ITA), has a name that evokes questions.

Is this girl an ancestor of Deanna Troi?

And if she is, does that mean the memory of having a figure skater in the human side of the family will endure through the centuries, and will lead to Lwaxana and Ian Andrew Troi naming their daughter after Deanna Steletto?

Now that the girls are finished, a group of 5 boys is starting now. Straight in; no resurfacing or anything.

There is an hour long break coming up after this group, but I have to do something now. So. I will pause the boys and play catch-up when I am finished.

The dinner break is over, and it is now time for our second marathon of the event. After starting the day with a 5h 30m Advanced Novice Ladies marathon, we now have a 7 hour Junior Ladies Marathon.

This is going to be a real battle of endurance for the officials to keep sharp for the whole segment. So, I wish them all the best.

And I also hope that they will be nice to my 4 kids!

That is worrying to see. The first skater out, Buse SEZERER (TUR) has her right knee strapped.

She is wearing a beautiful purple dress, and skating to Indian music.

She actually skated well. But afterwards, she was having difficulty getting through the gate, and then was walking carefully to the results area.

I realise competing in this event is a big deal to the Turkish skaters, but it might have been better for Buse's recovery to give it a miss this year.

Because I have not seen Vayana yet this season, and didn't know what her dress looked like, I was worried that I would not be able to spot her. And as it turned out I was right to worry. Because I ended up following the wrong skater around the rink!

Consequently, I have had to re-write this post.

Vayana started out by doing a lap of the rink, and then came into the middle and did a whole pile of spins in a circle. She then set off again, doing some mini-jumps, and went out of camera shot.

When she came back into shot, she went down to the far end of the rink and attempted a jump, but popped it. She then circled around and had another go, and it worked this time.

She then circled around and did a third jump, but I don't think she got the full number of rotations, because she landed facing where she came from.

After a while of just skating around the rink, she went down and did a fourth jump at the same place. And this one was lovely.

With about 2 minutes to go, the camera zoomed in on each of the judges. And when they zoomed out, we saw Vayana go over to Andrei Lutay and have a chat with him. She then set off, and did a fifth jump at the same spot. This one went well. She then went back to him.

With a minute to go, she went into the centre of the rink and did a lovely spin, and went back to the boards. She then came out looking like to do something else, but another skater got in her way, so she just did some small spins.

And that was it.

Looking forward to seeing what her programmes are like.

It's hard to describe the colour of her dress. It's sort of a pale brown, with a black pattern.

Skating to “Ne Me Quitte Pas”.

Fall on the first jump.

Not actually sure if the second element was an individual jump or a combination! If it was the latter, the second jump was VERY small. Which is what made me think it was maybe choreography rather than a read jump.

The next combination jump was good. And so was the spin immediately after it.

Lovely sit spin towards the end.

Not sure about this finishing the programme lying down on the ice.

She goes into 6th position.

I know that she is new to Juniors this season, but I was expecting a higher score than this. It's not like she had a bad skate. She was actually quite good!

Didn't arrive back from my dinner in time to see all of the Warm-Up.

This was one occasion when I was grateful that Chiara had dyed her hair blonde, because it meant that I spotted her quite quickly (nearly all the girls in this group have dark hair).

She did a lovely jump at the far end of the rink, just at the edge of camera shot.

Towards the end of the Warm-Up, she went over to Andrei, spoke to him, and then went and did another jump at the far end of the rink, but out of camera shot. And then she went back to him, and set off in the same direction again, and presumably did another jump out of camera shot.

Looking forward to seeing her programme again. It seems like a long time since her Junior GP.
