2025 U.S. Nationals: General Info and pre-game chat

Can someone explain why this is happening. It is downright bizarre. Why are they combining both the men's short program and the free dance together like this. Please just separate the two because it doesn't make sense. Two groups of men tearing up the ice and then the ice dancers have to deal with the ruts and then the final group of men go on after God knows how long and add more ruts that the final group of ice dancers have to navigate. Just do free dance first then the men's short afterwards please let's embrace common sense here
Why are they doing this? Its beyond irritating.

Is it not possible that Jason could petition to Worlds?
I was wondering if they still allowed it...it's been a long time since I remember someone doing it successfully. Jason tried in 2006 (back injury) but was unsuccessful and they sent Grant.

Phil Hersh asked Jason about it, Jason did not confirm if he would - https://bsky.app/profile/olyphil.bsky.social/post/3lg7hdsriok25
Interesting phrasiology...I am not here to diss any of the other US skaters and Jason is one of my all time fav men, but I think USFS needs him at worlds. Yes, there is a high likelyhood that Ilia will win and get us three spots at Olys....and I dont know the current rules, but there is a point system and if Jason is on, he can get us points to have an Oly position(s) if Ilia has an issue. N'est pas? Jason is 30 and can do shows for awhile and if he isnt an Am. he can keep all the money and not have to give some of it to the USFS. When Mirai was skating Am she had to fill out a request to do a show and give X percentage to the USFS. Maybe that has changed. ???

It hasn't been that long since a skater or team petitioned successfully.. Alexa and Brandon petitioned to be named to the 2022 Olympics and worlds... with great success. Likewise Alysa Lu. I guess Jason would have a good shot at being named; it depends a lot on how well the other men (aside from Ilia) skate at Nationals.

About petitioning for an Olympic or world spot, there has been a steady progression over at least two decades in the criteria. The wording used to be, "In the case of a dominant athlete who misses I.S. National;ls due to injury..." "Dominant" back then was interpreted to mean something along the lines of. likely to win any given national or international event and to crush all opposition. If you missed nationals for any reason, you better be Michelle Kwan, or at ;least Todd Eldrege.

With every new revision of the rules, the USFSA has moved farther and farther away from, "first, second, third" at nationals s get the world spots" and toward (to quote the current USFSA document):

"From the pool of eligible athletes/teams..., the respective International Committee Discipline Subcommittee will select the World Team plus up to three substitute athletes/teams in a ranked order. The purpose of the process is to select the athletes who will have the best chance for success at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships to win the maximum number of medals and future berths for the World Team the following season."

And

"It has been the experience of U.S. Figure Skating that the athletes who have had success at the international level are those who have demonstrated consistent performances as opposed to the athletes who have only a single great performance [[for example, at U.S. Nationals]]. Therefore, by not having the selection process based solely on one event, U.S. Figure Skating can select the best athletes to represent the United States at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships. In addition, if there is an injury or illness that would prevent a dominant athlete from competing at one of the events listed in section 1.2, the petition process allows U.S. Figure Skating to consider for selection all the best representatives for the ISU World Figure Skating Championships."

In other words, if the SelectionSubcommittee thinks that, all things considered, Jason has the best chance, along with Ilia, of bringing home the bacon, that's that. The criticism of this method is that it depends entirely on closed door subjective evaluation. (Not that the members of the se;ectio subcommittees are secret, but I bet you can't name any of them. ;) )

Jason needs to land and rotate his jumps to score well though. With good equipment and whatnot he probably would. But please note, Andrew outscored Jason at NHK. In fact, at both of Andrew's GPs, he scored higher than both of Jason's GPs. Saying USFS "needs" Jason for 3 spots may be a bit overstated. The other U.S. men could bomb Worlds or any competition, but Andrew has had a strong season. People remember and love Jason for skating well and having artistry, but he's been vulnerable this season. U.S. Men is always unpredictable, and that's no different this competition. Andrew, Max, Camden, or even Jimmy can all come through depending on the day. As to whether USFS would grant Jason's petition, who knows. It might depend on the placements and scores at Nationals among the other contenders, Jason's readiness, etc.

Just wondering which Golden Skaters are in the arena watching live, and what their experiences and observations have been. Last night the arena seemed practically empty for Junior Dance, but I’m sure that some of us must be there!

Folks, please check in, so we can enjoy your experiences vicariously! Thank you.

That's right...I wasn't thinking about Covid...but that was an exceptional circumstance.

Does anyone know if they will be uploading the junior podium ceremonies anywhere?

I am beyond dismayed… I missed the Junior Men’s Free because I did not find/bookmark the Peacock tile for it! Which is strange b/c I’ve bookmarked everything else.. now trying to find the tile for Replay of the event and it is nonexistent! Bummmmer👿

I found it by searching for Junior men’s free skate and the tile came up… but I swear… (like MacCaverity…) the original tile was not there:biggrin: thanks 🙏 Watching now But I know who won due to Instagram :angry2::tantrum:
