I think subs are only admitted if the first choices get injured.
My understanding is that the Russian Fed were able to put forwards a first and second choice for each category (as were Belarus). I think the second choices are what Lariko was referring to as subs.

My understanding if first choice is not qualified, then the second choice is not even considered, so if M/G did not qualify, it automatically disqualifies B/K.
If M/G qualified , then B/K would've been considered, but they could only participate if M/G injured.
The ruling also mentioned that skaters can be disqualified in later time if new info discovered. So it is not a sure thing till it is.

And if you have any evidence against a Russian you can send it to [email protected]! They want to hear from you

Boykova/Kozlovskiy probably didn't pass the scrutiny thanks to the same show that had also potentially tanked Semenenko's chances vs Dikidzhi. Not sure why they didn't try Khabibulina/Knyazhuk since they are about as low profile as Gorbacheva and Dikidzhi. But, yeah, no pair makes this Olympic stint suck even worse than it did already.

I think most Russian fans just didn't want to say it out loud but it was quite obvious that anyone who went to the previous olympics (M/G, B/K and S/B) were almost sure to be denied because they went to that victory parade for the olympians regardless if they are aware or not that it will be turned into political circus. If they did not submit their names, then it's basically admitting that their government is wrong which I don't think will be taken lightly.

It's pretty clear that fans are OK if they submitted other names in pairs and ID, but I think Rusfed made the call to submit M/G and S/B's names to appease to the government because if not, the backlash from the government will be insatiable and crippling to the organization.

So true. I’m trying to imagine any scenario where the Russian federation can punish stepanova and bukin for meeting with Putin by submitting k/n instead and it not being horrible for the people who did it. They try to say s/b would still be submitted but it’s like too clever by half.

No, there's nothing like an average opinion at this point. That's aside from the fact that
1) There are no "victory parades". Or, more accurately, such a term exists, it just has nothing to do with sports.
2) B/K have never attented any events in the Kremlin.

Wasn't just M/G. Whoever was the sub didn't make it either. And neither did Stepanova/Bukin and whoever was their sub. Eh, too bad Chikmareva had growing pains... It is what it is. This Olympics is going to be even worse than the previous one for FS.
The lack of crowd did hurt Beijing as well as the cruel, cynical, premeditated announcement at the conclusion of the team event, but in terms of drama and excitement it probably does not get better than the last four skaters in the free skate of the women's. For Sakamoto (she was never really a chance but showed her absolute maximum), Trusova, Shcherbakova this was skating at the highest level. Valieva was a warrior tried her best under the cruellest of circumstances (they even had flashing on the screen in her warm up area there would be no medal presentation if Valieva is on the podium didn't they realise this would psychologically destabilise a 15 year old even more?)

This is wild. No wonder the sport is in such a dire position they waste months of their time stalking the social media profiles of 17 year old girls (I can imagine a group of old men sitting around a table in Lausanne setting up profiles on Instagram in order to play super sleuth) rather than grow and improve the sport which is their duty as its custodians. All this energy and time invested in fussing over 4 sets of skaters. 99% of the world watching Olympics figure skating do not care if someone comes from Russia or Belarus, they want to see the best perform.

Last year the Challengers were announced in March, this year May, no information about the qualification tournament (I'd like to attend less likely now that the best pairs in the world won't be there and will probably be a complete disaster in terms of organisation).

But still, I don't understand how the ISU can ban skaters for attending a presentation at the Kremlin for winning Olympic gold. Athletes might feel they have no choice but to attend. The ISU is somewhat endangering the lives of skaters by implicitly saying you'll be banned from international competition if you don't dissent. This is an enormous and possibly dangerous burden to place athletes, some who will only be 18 at the Olympics. In fact it's completely insane what they are expecting from athletes. The IOC need to step in here to protect the skaters.

Are the North Koreans forbidden to receive awards from their leader? Does the ISU ban those skaters as well if the receive a award?

As far as I remember, Anna Shcherbakova found a way out of the circus, at least for a while, and did not attend this infamous Kremlin party. I did not see her sent to a labour camp for that or facing any other dire consequences. Just saying.

There was a two week quarantine required. She did receive a state award at a state event later on.

There was no "infamous Kremlin party" they were routine awards handed out to gold medallists after every Olympics like in most countries. Like when Sarah Hughes met with Bush in 2002 (try to think what was going on in the world back then ). Just a routine meeting. It doesn't imply anything about Sarah Hughes political leanings or views on foreign policy, etc. Simply an event to recognise an athlete's great accomplishment.

Kwan with Bush in 2006. I think she was part of his the Bush administration as well! Cast your mind back to what was the news cycle in 2006

Mishina with the leader of her country. Seems like a standard award ceremony.

Did someone give you personally or the ISU bureaucrats the legal right to call any events held in Russia a "circus"? Are you personally or the ISU bureaucrats an impeccable moral standard? Were you personally or the ISU bureaucrats given divine knowledge from birth about which policies of a particular country are right and which policies are wrong?

All that is required in this case from the IOC and the ISU is to support a simple and clear rule - sport is outside of politics. Any person on Earth has the right to have certain political views and attend certain political events. And neither you personally nor the ISU bureaucrats have any right to judge anyone for their political views.

Here someone still dares to talk about the "arrogance" of the Russian Figure Skating Federation. Yes, you yourself constantly display arrogance, imagining yourselves some kind of supreme judges and arbiters of destinies. Neither you personally nor the ISU bureaucrats have any grounds for such a thing, you all just imagine too much about yourselves.

Mishina and Galliamov, Boykova and Kozlovsky, Stepanova and Bukin are not criminals, but athletes. They do not engage in politics at competitions. And their only crime is that they can "spoil the podium", which is probably intended for representatives of the "right" countries.

Repeating the same stupidity year after year about how sports are used for propaganda in Russia, ISU representatives themselves brazenly and unceremoniously turn competitions into a political action. They have once again succeeded in this completely.

One thing in this discussion: if any of those listed athletes will qualify and go to olymipics as neutral and if any of them will get a medal - will or will not they be celebrated in Russian/Belarussian national media and sport institutions? Will or will not they be domestically introduced as national heros? Will or will not those neutral athletes receive awards from leaders of countries they supossedly do not even represent?

Let me guess, English is not your first language.

If they win, they will be heroes and they will not be able to do a Shcherbakova whether they want to or not. (And the international fallout will depend on what the international political situation - and no, I am not going to derail the thread by actually talking about politics - is next April.) If they don't win, especially whoever is chosen for the poisoned chalice of the women's discipline, it is not going to be pretty.

Oh, and by the way?
a simple and clear rule - sport is outside of politics.
Anyone who can say that with a straight face is a better actor than any Oscar winner could ever dream of being.

Sport and politics and propaganda have been inextricably entwined for well over 100 years, in every country on the planet, and will probably never change. "It is war minus the shooting." (Orwell)

Mishina and Galliamov have done so little to support the war which makes this so frustrating. They pulled out of the pro-war show whose poster is constantly held against them--BK actually performed at this show but were not on the poster so their presence has been forgotten. Apart from attending the post-Olympic celebration, they had not attended anything else, and this was at the very start of the war/when they would have been unaware of the media propaganda. Galliamov may be privately pro-war (though there is no actual evidence for this) but they have not done anything to support the war other than attending a routine event to celebrate Olympic medalists which had no war propaganda or imagery present (for instance there were no Zs)
