Shoma Uno

Glad you enjoyed your trip @rabidline. So many times I've thought "What if Shoma had quit skating in 2019?!?!", when he really was considering it. Thank goodness the stars aligned and Stephane was there and offered to help, just to help out a friend, not with the thought of " Gee, if I could coach him, we could be the dynamic duo!" This show was a fun vehicle that allowed his versatility to shine through.

I know! I also am amazed that we are able to see glimpses of how their relationship evolved even after Shoma stopped competing and they are no longer coach and student. That really speaks volumes about how it was never just about the medals and the titles with them. They are really more of close friends who lend each other strength when they need it.

Now all I want is Stephane and Shoma creating shows every year and inviting the other to skate there... Japan would really love a show like L'Apprenti Sorcier I think 🥹

This show was a fun vehicle that allowed his versatility to shine through.
It's so mindblowing. Like... I know he's a great skater and performer, I have seen and watched him live several times too. But this was just another level and shows the potential that he has when he has the time and space to really dedicate himself to skating the way he wants to skate. When I tell you there were whole sequences in the show when I watch with my mouth agape because it was beyond anything I expected but it's also all still so him.

Ah, also what I love about Ice Brave was that there was just SO MUCH SKATING. Skating alone, skating together, skating with ice dancing elements, skating with land dancing elements, skating mirroring each other, skating crossing each other, skating side-by side. The humorous skits? Done with skating. The choreography by land dancer? Done with skating. The MC sessions? Also Skating. They did not take off those skates for 90 minutes and I really appreciate it.

I believe Shoma can do whatever he wants to do and explore other fields of artistry in the future, but I love that his first produced show was 90 minutes of so much skating.
"Thank you so much for this beautiful description. I'm reading it with tears streaming down my face. When I close my eyes, I can try to imagine the whole performance. I hope there will be a DVD recording available for Shoma's fans outside of Japan."

Shoma collaboration pillow and mattress by Mizuno! A friend who tried the Mizuno pillow said they're very comfortable.

Also an interesting preview of paid podcast about Ice Brave by Number between Yoshie Noguchi (I used to type her name as Mie Noguchi and my friend told me her name is read as Yoshie... sorry Noguchi san) and Misa Fujii.

【Podcast】“Shoma Uno's Second Chapter Has Begun!” A Writer’s Perspective on the Highlights of Ice Brave – Decoding His Exclusive Interview
By Misa Fujii – Figure Skating – June 27, 2025

Shoma Uno shows entirely new expression while using past music

In this episode of the podcast Echoes from the Rink, where veteran figure skating journalist Yoshie Noguchi—known for her long-standing relationships with the athletes—dives deep into behind-the-scenes stories and hot topics from a fan’s point of view, the spotlight is on Ice Brave, the ice show produced by Shoma Uno, which opened on June 14. The podcast explores the show and an exclusive interview with Uno following the first two performances, offering fresh insight into his artistry and intent.

“It was truly incredible. There aren’t many ice shows at this level! The music kept coming, no breaks at all… We were swept up into the world of the show—it was so intense, the audience was left exhausted in a good way.”

At a talk show back in April, Uno had said, “All I want is for people to look forward to it.” As promised, Ice Brave turned out to be a beautifully polished production. Noguchi, who saw rehearsals about a month earlier, remarked that the final product had evolved “hundreds of times” since then. All six other performers, along with Uno, delivered exceptional performances.

Among them, Stéphane Lambiel made an especially powerful impression. Despite being 40 years old, his movement was so dynamic that the entire venue was mesmerized.

Uno expressed his joy in the interview:

“It’s not normal to be able to perform in an ice show with your own coach. I’m just really happy that he’s taking it so seriously.”

Lambiel was more than just a guest—he took part in the group choreography and delivered two full solo performances.

The show had so many highlights that Noguchi commented, “Where do we even start?” One standout moment was the duet “Legends,” where Uno and Lambiel danced in perfect unison.

“It was shocking how in-sync they were. And even though the choreography was identical, each skater’s personality and expressive style shone through,” Noguchi said. Uno drew the audience in with deep edges and varied speeds, while Lambiel captivated with his fluidity. “But the actual movements were the same,” she emphasized.

NumberPREMIER also interviewed Lambiel just two days after speaking with Uno. Interestingly, despite being interviewed separately, their comments were strikingly aligned.

“The other person was skating so well, I didn’t want to lose,” one of them said. Their mutual drive to improve was clear in their performance.

Another major highlight, also widely covered in the media, was the ice dance segment with Marin Honda. Uno casually revealed that not only did he perform the ice dance with Honda, but he also skated his other routines using ice dance boots—something rarely done.

The synchronicity in their twizzles drew particular attention, with Noguchi noting:

“Marin Honda’s technical skill is incredibly high. She was clearly adjusting to Uno.”

Noguchi believes the ice dance was set up as a continuation of Lambiel’s earlier solo performance, “Timelapse,” a piece Uno himself used in his final competitive season.

“Stéphane’s ‘Timelapse’ was so beautiful, it made me realize, ‘So this is what the piece means!’ It felt like an old equation finally made sense. And right after that, the duo presented a fresh new interpretation of the same theme. That connection was truly magical.”

This wasn’t just a trendy or emotional highlight—it reflected a deep artistic evolution. While we can’t yet see the full picture of the “next stage” Uno often speaks of, Ice Brave offers a glimpse into it.

Other topics covered:
  • Uno had a foot cramp just before the interview
  • Adrenaline-fueled chat that couldn’t be stopped
  • Uses older music, but not a “thank-you tour”
  • Uno’s leadership was palpable
  • Fans are calling for encore performances—a must-watch for all skating fans
An interview with Stéphane Lambiel is also set to be released soon. Stay tuned! (Recorded June 23)

Note: The podcast is available exclusively to NumberPREMIER members. You can listen to it at the bottom of the page.

I can't wait for Stephane's interview to drop- even if the content is paid, that's going to be in English!!!! 😂

More Ice Brave footage from the show (also bonus Niigata onigiri which looked so good...)

And Shoma got the name of the program wrong at the end 🤣 it's supposed to be Smile Stadium but he said it as Smile Net loool. His embarassed and mortified smile and laugh is so cute.

Hello Shoma. Isn't it funny that he finally became a brand ambassador for MIZUNO mattresses and pillows after he retired 😂 but in a way it allows him to rest well without worrying whether he's practiced hard enough for competitions 😅

He changed his Twitter profile again 😅 now it's "I like manga, anime, and games, but I have no talent. I got pretty far with skating, though."

Which is something he commented when someone said come on, Shoma, you should talk about skating on your Twitter:

"People who roller-skate at a sport center (Spocha) are really good, it’s kind of intimidating. I wonder if they have natural talent."

He did go rollerskating with Itsuki and his mother in the past LOL (and cantilevered) at a sport center, this was after Japanese Nationals 2019:

Shoma recently posted 2 Ice Brave Q&A videos under his Youtube paid membership, and he specifically said it's fine to talk about what he said in social media of his answers in these 2 videos, so a bit of a summary:

- Shoma is very happy that the show he had envisioned and tried to create was brought to life by everyone.

- Shoma offered Ice Brave to Kazuki Kushida "Kussy" back in January because he was the only other person with Shoma who took a taxi ride together back from the mystery anime show in Fukuoka (BISF25). Shoma didn't know him that well but thought he was great at the show they just did (Kussy did Tokyo Ghoul and did some cool choreo moves) but the taxi ride sealed the deal. "A great encounter" is what he said.

- Shoma also thought Kussy was going to be a more casual and easy-going guy, but he turned out to be very earnest and thoughtful, in a good way. This was when he was asked whether there's anything from the skaters of Ice Brave that surprised him.

- Stephane said to Shoma that Timelapse/Spiegel im Spiegel is easier to skate because of the slower tempo, compared to Gravity.

- Shoma also said that he didn't actually give Stephane any advice or criticism for his parts in the show because Stephane learns so fast and is so damn good. He mostly said he's worried for Stephane for some humor. Also they got to have a fun time at practices and fool around after Stephane joined them.

- Wild Side (the duet program with Marin) was choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto, the music was selected by Marin.

- Shoma strongly preferred skating together with other skaters (not just the duet with Marin, but also the group numbers and other collaborations) than skating alone in Ice Brave, but did choose to skate Loco alone as a solo program because it's a program that's been awaited for so long by the fans who have supported him.

- Practicing to skate together with Marin was really hard and Shoma was supported and helped a lot by Marin and Kenji. In his singles career, he didn't really spend too much time practicing skating beyond practicing and refining his programs, so Shoma said he was lacking in basic skating and footwork. And also, he knows he's short, LOL. Marin learned choreography REALLY FAST and Shoma learned choreography REALLY SLOW so he thanked her a lot for helping him train and improve so much. Also funny thing is that after they did the dance spin in their program, Shoma tends to lose direction on where to face next and Marin was like "this way! this way!" during their program, LOL.

- Also Shoma said when people / skaters realized he was learning ice dance, they were like... "You? Ice Dancing? Really?" and it kind of annoys him and fires him up, LOL.

- Shoma immediately was able to land a 3A after changing his blades to blades designed for ice dancing. He's jumping 3A and 4T fine with it. Shoma was actually more scared of doing spins after the change, more than the jumps.

- Shoma's blonde because someone said it will look good on him, and he just... colored his hair. He likes it better than his black hair (deep sigh).

- No video recording planned for Ice Brave at the moment. Shoma may post some footage of it on his Youtube paid membership.

- Shoma when asked whether he trained / worked out to show off his back in the black Loco costume with the sheer back: "I can't see my back, so I don't know." One one hand, he's right. On the other hand, Shoma........................ 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

------------------------

The videos were fun and chaotic. I'm sure I missed some of the other answers, but it's been a while since Shoma's been able to talk about what he's been working on skating that much in the membership, since he's been very secretive about what he's doing (practicing for Ice Brave) until the show finally premiered. He sounds very happy.

LOL, someone posted a reply to Shoma's earlier tweet with the video of him roller skating Itsuki shared in the past:

Also Shoma's 111,111 Twitter followers commemoration screenshot, LOL. As in previous cases, when his tweets go viral his follower count moves upwards very quickly, so it's hard to capture the *exact* moment.

I'm really disappointed by this too-- I haven't even seen any of the news clips of Ice Brave because I thought there would be a full recording forthcoming. He knows most of his overseas fans won't be able to get to see Ice Brave and this has been highly anticipated...why isn't there a full recording?!? 😫 There's a small part of me that hopes he's trolling about this, but the part that isn't just makes me want to :bang:

Edit: Thinking about this a little more, Shoma probably didn't think that Ice Brave would be the smash hit it seems to have been, hence no full video...surely he'll have more faith in himself next time, if there is a next time? Coming from the perspective of someone who is also self-critical, it might not be a realistic thing to hope for...but I can hope a little, I guess?

Yeah.... even now, I'm kind of regretting not going to the third show in Aichi, sigh. It was right there but I can't miss more work days....

Shoma doesn't even think he has that many fans in Japan, let alone overseas 😅

I had a feeling that it's going to be hard (or long) to have videos out there, so I kept posting footage here to keep track on it.

Bleaching hair is different from dye right?

That roller skating clip always made me laugh! Brother Tree gives his best try on the cantilever, but not quite! These two mischief makers! Look at that cheeky grin on Tree! I didn't know what these Pockys were, but I have seen them at my local super market now. Kind of chocolate-y type things. Officially chocolate covered biscuit sticks.

Shoma's quest to get that pesky Nintendo Switch 2 continues... he's entering into another official lottery, but this time he applies for the multi-language version of the console, instead of the Japanese language only he's been applying. Good luck. Very official announcement today as he submits his lottery application.

[Announcement]
We have an important update regarding our participation in the 5th Switch2 Public Audition.
After carefully considering Shoma Uno’s current physical and mental condition and holding thorough discussions, we have decided to apply for the multilingual version.

Although our position has changed, we will continue to approach this challenge with respect for all participants.

-----------------------

Shoma's Twitter account is somehow up there with official game-related accounts including the official Nintendo Twitter itself as one of the accounts with highest repost count regarding the Switch 2 topic.... expected as all his Switch 2 tweets went viral 😅
