Loving this group of Mexican ladies - they are on the rise giving inspired skates with some solid elements.

International judges are not going out of their way to watch domestic competitions, except for the ones they are judging. They might hear things about skaters, but outside of the winner, most of them probably won't even remember the names. They might be lovers of the sport, but they are also all adults with busy lives who mostly have full-time jobs in addition to being judges. A lot of judges aren't even on social media, particularly the older ones, of which there are many.

Even commentators, whose job it is to do the kind of research I do in my free time for fun, oftentimes don't have all of the information that is publicly available and get surprised by new faces, even when these skaters are already being talked about among fans due to their domestic results (as Novices, for example).

They all know about the skaters that come from Russia. That's why the scores are so low.

I was a pretty awful jumper, but I could spin in both directions and know hard that is to do.

I noticed that, and in 2 different spins I'm pretty sure!

But quite a lot of skaters can do bi-directional spins now, meanwhile Sonja is the only one that does bi-directional jumps as far as I know

I like the progress I'm seeing in Mexican ladies skating. I'd like to see the same on the men's side too. Yes, Carillo is great - but they need more depth below him.

Sonja is such a joy. She choreographs her own programs, and they are an absolute delight. She'll have a bright future after competitive sport for sure (though I hope that is still some way off in the future), whether as a choreographer or as a show skater.

Go ahead, ask some judges (preferably not from a Russian satellite country) and commentators if they know who for example Sofia Dzepka or Lidia Pleskacheva is and what they know about them, and report back. Ideally in a setting where they can't look up the skater, otherwise it's a useless question.
