Issues with quality on recent Jackson boots

Hi everyone!

I wanted to see if anyone was having quality issues with Jackson boots, specially newer ones with the recent changes they've been making to their models.

For some context, about two months ago I got a pair of Jackson Supreme 5385. I was previously on Synergy 6075 and I did enjoy those, so I wanted to get the same boot but Jackson wouldn't be able to get those to me until October/November. Since I could not wait that long because my Synergys were practically dead, I decided to get the Supremes instead.

The Supremes have felt off since the first time I wore them, they have felt really flimsy, specially around the ankles and tying these skates has been a nightmare, I can never get them to feel comfortable and stable on the ice. Also, the tongue on these skates is extremely thin compared to all other Jackson skates I've had before. Mind you these are my fourth pair of Jacksons and they've got the highest rating of support Jackson offers, but none of the previous skates had felt like this low of a quality.

To be honest, I do think I have broken down the Supremes, the ankle bend on them is getting really deep, the pinching on the sides is starting to become noticeable, they are hurting in places where they didn't hurt before and I'm struggling to do things that I usually don't struggle with, which are all the signs I usually get when my skates are dying.

It goes without saying but I feel like 2 months is absolutely ridiculous to be breaking down these boots, specially because of the support rating they have and their price tag.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them recently?

Hello and welcome. One of the issues you are probably having here is that Synergy line is made different than the regular line of boots. So the Supreme are going to feel flimsy to you. Do you know what stiffness they actually sold you in the 5385? Because it comes in three different stiffness levels (some by order) 85, 75 and 65. So I wonder if there's a possibility that you presumed that they sold you an 85 stiffness and it may be a 65 which would explain why it's so flimsy and breaking down so fast. Just a thought...

Regardless, would you consider trying another brand? Your foot may work with the RF line of Risport boots. If so, try on an RF1 Elite.

Good luck!

Have you considered going to a different brand of boots? Your foot may work with a Risport

Hi, thank you for your response!

I have thought about how the Synergys are made differently, especially the synthetic material they use as opposed to the real leather on the Supremes, I just didn’t think that it would affect so much.

Regarding the stiffness, I’m sure they are the 85 support rate since they were made to order. Plus, the code for Supremes is 5300 and the box on mine does say 5385, the 85 indicating the support rate.

I have never tried any other skate brands, especially because Jackson has always worked well for me, but this particular pair of skates has been such a letdown that I am thinking about giving other brands a try. The only issue here is that I will have to travel to get to a proper fitter where they have more brands in stock, my local shop doesn’t really have a variety of brands or sizes. Still, that’s probably a better way to spend my money than on boots that won’t work for me. :D

Thank you for the recommendation though, I'll have to give Risport a try!

* Jackson has a 6 month warranty against manufacturing defects. So you should bring your boots back to the fitter for inspection and to discuss their premature breakdown. This, of course, presumes that your fitter fitted you in boots of the proper size.

* The Jackson Supreme (5300 series) had some redesigned features released over the past year. So you're absolutely correct on soliciting recent experiences. Unfortunately the model numbers remained the same, so you can't tell the new from the old based on model numbers. I have a pair of men's 5362 from a couple of years ago, and I looked at the latest 5300 a couple of weeks ago at a shop when I was waiting for my blades to be sharpened. Noticeably different are the new sole (unfortunately they got rid of the LCF sole, which was a great material) and the new tongue. There may be internal differences as well that are not visible; I don't know. In particular, the new design 6K tongue has a different construction, is thinner overall, and has thinner edges around the periphery of the tongue. The previous 6K tongue was extremely stiff and required extensive break-in. There also tended to be excessive wear around the thick edges. My guess (purely a guess) is that the new tongue has been redesigned to address these problems. BUT, if they've gone too far the other way, I can see that being a problem, because in the 5300 series, the tongue is a major structural component. Just based on casual inspection and handling, the new tongue did feel flimsy to me in comparison.
