i’m trying to figure out the proper way to explain it to my trainer so we can figure out workouts to improve what needs to be improved for my programs. if this makes sense?

my program is like 2:40 and i would say by like 1:35-1:40 of a full program i am dying and things are much much more sloppier 😔 and im probably skipping my last couple elements. i know its me needing to run full programs more (if you have a system for building this on ice i would also appreciate it), but i do work with a gym trainer off ice (cross fit 1x a week), and im trying to build a routine for the next couple weeks to whip into shape because my season starts in like a month so im open to all response!!

thank you in advance!!

I consider them to be the same thing. I would explain to your trainer that it's cardio endurance with bursts of power/quickness scattered throughout. A little bit like a soccer player.

I'm sure a professional trainer in a gym can come up with scientifically-tested stamina-building routines. But my competitive career largely predated that sort of off-ice work, and what we did was the most basic possible. We jogged, at a steady pace. Around the outside of the arena on nice days, up and down the halls when it rained or snowed. Ran in place in hotel or motel rooms while travelling to competitions. The important point was that you ran for exactly twice the length of your program, without varying your speed and without stopping. You can't at first, but then gradually you can. Your program is 2:40? So you run without slowing and without stopping for 5:20. When you can do that every time, it means that when you skate, the end of your program is only halfway through the length of your normal everyday run so you have plenty of energy left.

And if your rink allows it, work up to skating your complete program twice through without stopping. You may have to cut jumps down to singles or doubles for safety, but at least keep going, even if you fall, unless your coach tells you to stop.

In the gym you can do whatever the trainer comes up with using his equipment. Good luck.

thank you! this was the type of response i was looking for! My off ice gym trainer is great, and i did tell him i need to work on both my stamina and endurance but he mostly trains cross-fit and high school varsity/JV soccer. So i even when we have a gym session before skating, we will tell him that we are skating right after so we can do light days but i don’t think he understands what a program is so sometimes me and my friend will be like “😀 so this will be a great skate” because our legs are jello lol. and he does not train a lot of skaters so i’m like do i just say like a program is cardio? but i know it’s not only cardio but i don’t know what like spins would be classified as, and jumps, so like i can’t figure out the right words to explain to him what facets we need to be cross training more intentionally, if that makes sense. but i really appreciate your response! this also helps me figure out a way to create a system for myself to follow. should i do the jogs before i skate? or after? or on off days?

I was given an extensive workout circuit to help with endurance and core. perform as many times as you can its instense.
2 min on the elyptical
24 lateral lunges with weight (just 8) on each side
24 assisted seated squats with weight
30 jump squats
2 min on the elyptical
on a matt do 24 push ups ( any kind will do)
24 straight leg crunches
and finally your going to stand and do a punch motion across your upper body for 2 min.
X3

i hope this finds you well! and good luck on your skating and programs !!

Ok so literally my issue last season.. I’m adult men gold. My program is 3:00. By 2:00 im praying I just stay on my feet. My coach had my jump seq, loop and flying camel in last 35 seconds. My final event of the season was the first time all year I landed my sequence clean and got positive GOE to boot lol . I never had my flying camel count cuz I fell out of it every time.. when im not dying its my best spin lol. My advice to train is. Train full run through often and stroke. Few laps after you’re done. At the gym you need to do circuit training with lots of body range movements. The sled push is a great one to add in for power bursts. I’m coming into this season about 15 lbs
Lighter than end of last season. My cardio is much better, I been running 5-10 km few times a week too. Will have to see in few weeks how it fares with. New program when I’m finished doing it with my coach.

Hasn't been mentioned here but also remember to breathe when you're on ice. When I start running a new program I'm so focused on elements and choreo that by the time it's all together I'm totally gassed because I'm holding my breath. Might not be your case but I have to remind myself to take a deep breath sometimes, if nowhere else at least before and after the step sequence.
