2025 Skate to Milano Men's Free Skate

So happy for Yu-Hsiang. He would come to the US every summer for several years and trained with one of the coaches in our rink (back when he still had his Taiwanese coach), and he's always been a sweet kid. So nice to see him do so well and reach his Olympic dreams.

ok... my son is skating in 4 hours or so but i will be sleeping... that was excruciating but relatively fun :) take care you all
OK... I thought I would be sleeping... I forgot that the marathon was going to go through my street... and they set up a water/food pit stop right in front of my condo... and the volunteers are cheering non-stop for the runners... So, I slept 4 hours.

UGH :) but that means more skating for me.

I think you are seeing things through your own lense. Marsak might have had sentiment on the crowd on his side, but he also skated decently with better tech than most. Kim was scored fairly. Gumennik often falls and underrotates even when he doesn't go for Malinin-Chen style load in some Saransk. And, if the judges put a skater from Taipei ahead, it was justified by his cleaner skate and potentially longer career ahead of him.
I have nothing against Marsak or Li. They both skated well and were decently scored. Good for them. Sad for Davide not being rewarded for his artistry. This is the usual in figure skating. Unless a skater is from a strong federation and has built up a long reputation of high profile artistic excellence, like Jason Brown, the judging is most likely not going to be in that skater's favor if sans quad(s) they do not at least have a reliable 3‐axel. Lack of a 3-axel is what has hampered Davide's high-scoring ability in his career.

I did not see Davide's previous competition, so I only learned from Beijing pre-event chatter that Davide recently landed the 3-axel. I was surprised to not see Davide perform it in Beijing, as it sounded as if he had finally mastered it. I guess not under pressure. It's really too bad Davide wasn't rewarded more on pcs, but lacking a quad and a 3-axel doesn't go down well for men in this sport, no matter how accomplished and beautiful their skating is. Davide was not on my radar nor in my predictions for top five. I was pleasantly surprised by Davide's gorgeous, well-executed sp, so I was rooting for him in the fp. But as I said after the sp, I felt that Kim and Davide would be vulnerable to quadsters with clean skates in the fp, while I expected the top three to prevail. Meltdowns in the fp due to pressure were not on my Bingo card for Carrillo and Pitot, as they both had fairly good sp leads and they had seemed confident.

In any case, as I emphasized previously, I was struck by GOE for Kim being so noticeably held back, from the first jump onward. Kim's quad was well-executed. As well-executed a quad as Kim landed always receives some GOE, even if meager. That was eye-opening for me, in addition to the low GOE for Kim throughout his fp. Plus, how Ted and Mark seemed to go out of their way to overly critique Kim's jump technique, while commenting in a more positive way about Marsak's messier looking technique, during his skate. Ted & Mark clearly framed Kim's skating skills and jump technique as lesser than, while framing Kyrylov's as 'different'. Plus, the crowd's reception of Kim's inspired, clean performance was very lukewarm. Sure that can happen with some crowds, but all of these observations are fairly obvious. I have found Kim to generally be a strong and consistent skater, and I enjoy watching him when he's at events. I have no strong fan attachment to either Kim or Davide. I'm only making observations about what I saw.

Whatever lens any of us have is the lens we have, emotional, objective, straightforward, opinionated, or a combination thereof, etc. 🙂 Yet, my observations are of things that were quite obvious.

Just catching up with the scores and some of the skates. Didn't expect Petr to struggle that much. Artistically, nice posture and nice gliding flow, but sadly no much more there. He was thinking all his moves, not feeling them so there was very little to no emotional connection to his skating :frown: (also, his FS is indeed the same than last season, but hasn't the choreo be simplified? I don't know, I just hadn't really noticed before that the choreo is mostly just arm movement, seemed a somewhat more balanced program ). And then even his tech failed him.... :frown::frown:

Men skating is my favorite discipline so I'm really really hoping that we get some sort of viable competition at the Olympics, so we can enjoy an exciting, truly competitive event. Of course it's very early in the season, but so far it seems that quite a few people who could potentially provide this (and the list is not that long to start with) are either injured or struggling, or dealing with (in some cases chronic) inconsistency, or all of this together 😢 Fingers crossed things turn around before Milan! 🤞

Also, too bad for Davide, the skater from Monaco; 5th in the SP and 5th in the FS, but 6th overall ! Must be hard for him to miss out on such a slim margin. Best wishes to him that he bounces back.

justified by his cleaner skate and potentially longer career ahead of him.
Li's skate was not cleaner than Davide's. Li had better point-gathering tech than Davide, and an inspired skate, while Davide's skate was also inspired, creative, and uniquely choreographed. Through your lens, having a 'potentially longer career ahead' might be better justification for Li scoring slight percentage points ahead of Davide to make the Olympics. Through my lens, skating two clean, creative, well-executed performances as a 26-year-old journeyman is great justification for being better rewarded on pcs, which would have made the difference for Davide going to the 2026 Olympics as an underdog longshot from a tiny country.

Through my lens, as an 18-year-old up-and-coming skater, Li will have more opportunities to make the Olympics, as will Genrikh Gartung, who is a year younger than Li, but did not have the competition performances he needed and likely expected of himself. Making the Olympics means so much to all these athletes, obviously. Li's tears of joy and his coaches' proud expressions are the positive side of what the kiss 'n cry is about.

The latter observation reminds me of how awful the camera operators were for zooming in on a weird closeup of Tamir Kuperman's eyes in the sp after his unexpectedly poor skate, when he was clearly overcome with disappointment. They apparently hoped to spy on some sad tears. SMH

Donovan:dance3:

Well deserved third, thanks to the skate of his life in the SP. But most importantly, los juegos Olímpicos!

I can't say any of the free programs (only watched the top six) excited me,

From an emotional standpoint, so happy for Kyrylo! And until this comp, I did not know about Petr's hair. Or watch him skate actually, Obviously I am very predisposed to love a men's skater with hair long enough for a ponytail. ;)

I'd prefer he puts a quad to rest and return to more choreo. It was quite empty for such strong music
For some reason he's really intented to skate with 5 quads. It has already happened before that he bombed because of a very unreasonable layout.

In my opinion, the 4Lo is the unnecessary one because it takes a lot of effort, and he has never actually rotated it.

Mr. Georgii RESHTENKO has something to say:
The man who came fifth and is going to the Olympics... honestly, I don't even want to comment. If they think that based on today's performances he deserves more — and apparently that's the kind of figure skating they want to see — then what can I say... I was better than him in every aspect, and I was better today too.

Even weirder that he only has one repetition. He does not have a lot of speed coming out of the quad loop, so he's not going to get high goe for it anyways. Replacing it with the second triple axel makes more sense. Even if he does rotate his quad loop, gains over good quality triple axel will be marginal.

The way I didn't even have to look it up to know who the German judge put into 3rd...
(Funnily enough, she's usually a big hater of everyone. She judged the JGPF SP in 2024 and her scores are all at least 5 points less than the average of the control panel 🙃 She also judged the Men's FS at Worlds this year and 21 of 24 skaters were scored lower than the average by her, 10 of them by more than 5 points. She particularly hated Nika Egadze, who she scored a whopping 15.59 points lower than the control panel.)

It has. There was no other way to include one more quad.

This is all very unfortunate :frown: I just wrote (quite a bit) about this in another thread, so I'll try and not to repeat myself, but Petr is capable of a decent balance between tech and PCS, and today he ended up having none really, both failed quite noticeably compared to what could be expected :frown:😢

This saddens me because for instance, compared to Adelia who was in his same position (and actually even worse, between being coachless and facing some sort of competition from Nastya and Loena), yes both won and classified (it would have required a complete meltdown for Petr not to classify as there was actually zero competition for him, that's maybe why the classification does not feel that remarcable), but the outcome feels very different. Adelia looked confident and solid, had a clear victory with only triples and no reputacional scoring, still may have the quad card under her sleeve for Milan, so things do look very promising for her. Petr maxed out the tech he can do (to the point where he can't really do it) and struggled a lot. His perspectives going to Milan look... well, lets just say they did look better (to me at least) before this event. Oh well, what is done, is done, so just hope he and his team manage to bring things back on track in time 🤞

The lack of preparation leads him to double everything in the second half.
Respectable skate in his conditions.
I was impressed that he persisted through to the end despite the pops, and with obvious fatigue - well done, Ed. [I can confirm what Mark says, after seeing Ed chat with fans at Euros - he's a really thoroughly nice man (and has a beautiful speaking voice/accent, too)!]
