2025-26 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

Argh.....I'm not putting in pairs' assignments for Tayside Trophy in my chart until after the event happens. :bang:

So, USFS updated the assignments page, and only lists Fitzpatrick/Bearinger and Plazas/Fernandez. The entry list has Fitzpatrick/Bearinger, Liu/Bedard, and Williams/Lewer. So, who knows what's going on there, or if USFS made an entry error which has happened in the past.
I'd love to see Liu/ Bedard being given more opportunities! Fitz/Bear have not shown a huge amount of potential nor progress over these recent years.

Williams/ Lewer have been on the junior circuit recently. Plazas/Fernandez are coming back from injury, so it will be interesting to see them. When will Liu/ Bedard get more opportunities to build on their promising potential? Hopefully, L/B will get a couple of Challenger events, if they can't get a senior GP.

They fixed it, and Liu/Bedard are now on the assignments page.

We'll see if they edit it again and add Williams/Lewer like the entry list says, or if they decided that doing a JGP and a senior event in close proximity again is too much for them.

Edit: Still doesn't solve the mystery if Plazas/Fernandez are still competing, lol.

ETA: Moss/Galbavy because they've now gotten a senior Challenger...wasn't expecting that.
Yes, I wonder if their entry listing is an error? Moss/ Galbavy are still developing advanced pairs elements to my knowledge. I believe they are doing throw doubles and a double twist, unless they've upgraded to triples this season.

I doubt that entry is an error. That assignment has been there since the entry list came out, and there's been ample time to correct it otherwise. I wasn't expecting them to dabble in the senior ranks at all this season, but if they want to try to get some senior tech minimums in the bank, more power to them.

They've done triple twists and attempted at least one triple throw in all of their events this year.

Most of the errors on the USFS assignment page tend to be errors of omission that are corrected when noticed, and once in awhile, they'll add something that shouldn't be there, but also those don't stay up long. Last season, someone added Ava Ziegler to an event when she wasn't ready to compete yet, and that was quickly removed when someone realized they'd made a big mistake.

It actually makes perfect sense for them to be sent to a Senior competition. They are the second-oldest Junior team (behind Williams/Lewer) and have the second-highest ISU PB of the Sr-eligible Junior teams (again, behind Williams/Lewer).
Consistency is an issue for them, particularly on the throws and sbs jumps but the thing I'm usually most worried about when teams move up to Seniors, the additional lift, is unlikely to pose an issue for them considering how easy their lifts look.

They also have a triple twist and two different throw triples (Loop and Salchow), though they only ever did all three of them successfully in a program once so far.

As they don't have a triple Flip/Lutz throw, they had to stick to a double in the Short, and in the Free they seem to prefer to take the throw Loop down to a double if they had issues with the 3STh.

Congrats to Chan and Howe for their medal at Trialeti Trophy! Their short program was great. I haven't watched their fs yet but just seems like mistakes on jumps. Nice to see them fully back after Spencer's major injury. Kam and O'shea returned after injury and had a decent score. She keeps struggling on throws but we know they are aware and hopefully keep focusing on fixing the mistakes. They are a really fun team to watch live.

In Tayside Trophy, Liu/Bedard had a great sp score. They are coming together so nicely as a team. Sad we won't see them on the gp this season but they have more senior b's they can go to. Plazas/Fernandez beat their sp score at Kinoshita and just had a small mistake on jump. Fitzpatrick/Bearinger who I always enjoy watching at Nationals had if I'm correct their best international sp score yet. Great job for them.

Lots of new(er) junior teams at Tayside as well. Not surprised to see Mcdanold/Felberbaum leading so far, they are probably the most experienced of the usa teams. I wish I could watch the event but oh well. Good luck to them all.

For Tayside Trophy congrats to Liu/Bedard on the bronze medal, also I was checking scores and looks like this might be his highest score ever achieved. They have really gelled so well together quite fast, helps a ton that Audrey is a great pairs girl. Both them and Plazas/Fernandez had basically the same score around 179 points which honestly for USA pairs is a great score. P/F beat their first event by 12 points, L/B also beat their John Nicks score by a good amount.

Coming up for USA pairs is McBeath/Parkman and Shin/Nagy at GP France. I really think M/P have a good shot at 2nd or 3rd depending on the Canadians and Hungarians of course. I had S/N 5th in my predication but took them out because I felt like I was jinxing it. 😂 Now I know they will get a great score.

Yes, I've been listening to a few of the podcast reviews. I especially enjoy Jackie Wong with his sidekick, Michelle Ellis (on Rocker Skating podcast). While they have strong opinions, they are generally fair-minded and I appreciate their camaraderie and honest takes that at the same time they are not overly aggressive about, as they seem to recognize that things can change on a dime in figure skating. They have a light-hearted approach that is generous and understanding, which allows for the fact that other fan perceptions can and will differ.

I wasn't able to find Liu/ Bedard's sp at Tayside, which I'd love to see, as I heard they skated clean. L/B didn't perform as well on the sbs in the fp. But they ended up with a higher score than Kam O'Shea got at Trialeti Trophy! As well, Val & Max had a higher score at Tayside than K/O at Trialeti. Plus, Chan/ Howe had a clean sp at Trialeti (scoring 71 in the sp) 👀 That has to be C/H's highest international score. C/H went back to their usual sbs jump issues in the fp. Their first throw in the fp was lovely, but Emily landed forward on the second throw. Their clean sp helped them to a 193.70 overall, which is highly competitive.

I am so bummed for Kam/ O'Shea. They laid down two great seasons in a row with beautiful, influential programs and costumes. Their collaboration with Marie-France and Co at IAM paid dividends to the point where at least two top international pairs teams made a bee-line to IAM for choreo: Miura/ Kihara last season and this season, working with M-F; and Conti/ Macii, working with Romain H this season. I have not been able to find K/O's sp to Hallelujah by k.d. lang. I did see on YT K/O's disappointing fp at Trialeti to Sweet Dreams/ Everybody Wants to Rule the World (+ one other selection). Maybe this music & program would have been something for them to explore a few seasons ago. But not in an Olympic year. Not after the absolutely gorgeous programs, costumes, and movement style they patented with M-F's help the past two seasons that has had so many teams trying to emulate and learn from them!

I realize that K/O had a very late start due to Danny having surgery and rehabbing. Plus, podcasters have indicated that Ellie suffered a concussion this summer. That would be why they pulled out of their first Challenger event. I wish they had kept their fp from last season. But, perhaps they wanted something fresh and slightly easier because they didn't have the usual amount of time to learn and train new programs.🤔 One reviewer remarked that they seemed slightly out of sync in their fp. Again, I'd attribute it to lack of sufficient training time over the summer. I hope K/O can pull it together in time to be stronger at U.S. Nationals against burgeoning teams like L/B and Val/Max. Even vs the recently struggling Shin/Nagy whom U.S. fed truly have been over-favoring for assignments. Plus, K/O need to perform decently well on the GP, too.

K/O and Alisa/ Misha helped get a third spot in pairs next year for Worlds, and also the opportunity for a third spot in pairs at the '26 Olympics, which U.S. fed threw away trying to get Shin/ Nagy to earn for themselves, when McBeath/ Parkman were the better team to send to Beijing, no matter that M/B aren't eligible for the '26 Olympics. It would have been great to see the U.S. send 3 singles/ teams in every discipline at the 2026 Olympics. In fact, the U.S. needed and deserved to send 3 pairs teams to the 2022 Olympics. It was so unfair to Calalang/ Johnson having to sit at home. U.S. fed miscalculated in not making a concerted effort to urge C/J to come back for at least two more seasons.

There was a very good chance at the recent Beijing qualifier to secure 3 pairs spots had U.S. fed went with the more consistent eligible team in M/B. Even the experienced Chan/ Howe would have been a better choice than recently paired Shin/ Nagy.

😂 That's the thing about figure skating when there's depth of talent. Anything can happen. Sure thing competitors can have a bad day. Skaters on the downturn competitively can make a comeback. You also have to account for politics. For example, I felt that McBeath/ Parkman skated better than Italy's Ghilardi/ Ambrosini at the recent Nebelhorn event (but M/B finished 5th, just behind G/A). The difference is that G/A have more exposure and stature with the judges. I do not like G/A's programs this season. They are another team with so-so programs for the Olympics, when they had much better programs the past two seasons. Sigh...

I recently came across an interview with Winter Deardorff on Adam Reisinger's Substack, Kingdom of Isolation, dated October 13, 2025. I had always wondered what happened to Winter. I enjoyed her skating partnerships, and I had been looking forward to seeing her continue her competitive career. She's currently performing with Disney on Ice.

Winter was lovely as a pairs skater with Max Settlage, and then with Mikhail Gumba (aka Johnson). After COVID season, Mikhail retired to pursue becoming a doctor. Winter paired with Jake Pagano, briefly, and then she partnered with Ryan Dodds to rep Australia. In this substack interview, Winter opens up about the fact that she stopped skating for a year because she felt burnt out:

"... my last nationals was in Nashville. And after that, I just felt so burnt out. I was done, but I kept going. I was gonna try and represent Australia with Ryan Dodds. We went to Australia. We competed in May. And again, I was so burnt out, that I just needed to step away from the ice. So I didn’t even step foot on the ice for almost a year.... and then I started coaching, and I fell in love with coaching, and kind of re-found my love for skating..."

When asked what she liked most and least about being a competitive skater, Winter responded:

"Dislike the most politics and the money behind politics and how that really gets in the competitive world more than you think. And then I loved meeting new people, and [competing] internationally was probably one of the favorite things I got to do... and it was really cool [to] meet different people from different cultures and compete with them, ‘cause, like, everyone is such an amazing athlete."

The timing of this was funny because I just discovered Jackie Wong's podcast yesterday and was enjoying catching up on them. I also like that while they do have strong opinions they are light-hearted and not mean in their approach.

Yeah, I think the concussion set them back a ton this season for preparation. Such terrible timing with his foot and her head injury because I don't think they had much time to really practice the jumps and throws. I just need them to stay healthy because I still think overall they will be the forefront team by Nationals, I just really love them as a team and while I do think their fs music is not as good as last year I dont think it was as terrible as people are saying.

Something that I think a lot of people will question during the leadup to Olympics... I actually do think there is a ton of potential with S/N but it was so much pressure on them and they just are not their yet. I'm still a bit annoyed they were given 2 assignments over Chan/Howe.

See thats what I love about figure skating fans! We all have different opinions. I actually loved G/A's programs at Nebelhorn and thought they looked so good, I was a bit sick of the vampire program on them. I also really like M/P programs as well, and I would not be shocked if they landed on podium (actually what I really hope happens but as you said anything can happen in skating)

Yeah, true. Re G/A, it was just my first impression. Maybe these programs will grow and develop more for them over the course of the season. I just wasn't feeling their programs at this event. Plus, it seemed as if Rebecca was reverting back to a more exaggerated leg wrap on her jumps. She has a bit of a jerky movement style that Luca Lanotte's 'vampire' choreo helped to make use of in a camouflaging way. Not that they needed to continue with the vampire theme. Just to find something else interesting, perhaps music from an operatic tale that they could sink their teeth into effectively in an entertaining way. 😁

I really enjoy McBeath/ Parkman's programs. They noted on their IG how Camerlengo helped them decide on the music for one of their programs. Fingers-crossed for M/B continuing to perform well. I also hope Danny and Ellie will be able to get stronger and perform better after a slow start due to injury recovery.

while I do think [Kam/O'Shea's] fs music is not as good as last year I dont think it was as terrible as people are saying.
I haven't heard too much of what people are saying about K/O's fp music this season. I wish these critics would be as vocal about how good a team K/O are, and how their music, costumes, and movement style have influenced the pairs field over the past couple of seasons!

I agree that their new free program isn't horrible. It just doesn't have the special impact that their previous seasons' fps had. And I am not feeling the black costumes in connection with the music. I would imagine that Marie-France played a role in picking their previous music selections. I doubt she had much to do with deciding on this fp music.

K/O discussed their music picks briefly in a recent interview. Maybe it was on Polina's podcast. 🤔 I have to doublecheck. The interview was released prior to K/O competing this season, since they had to pull out of Nebelhorn.

Even though it's on the ISU page, it's still not official on the USFS assignment page. It's still TBD. They just had to name someone by Sept 15th. Naming them to that second spot takes them off the alternates lists in the eyes of the ISU. We all know they were unlikely to get a second GP off the alternates list, but it's still unfair to do that to them.

I think the Skate America spot will end up going to Chan/Howe if they don't pick up a second GP soon.

Well, obv it should go to Chan/ Howe, now that McBeath/ Parkman have a second GP. No brainer, IMO, but whatever. I've been rolling my eyes about the men's GP for Skate America! 😳 Three men repping Italy, and only two U.S. guys?! 🤦🏽‍♀️
