2024-25 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

Oh my :(

Glad that the summer has started and that he can take the time off now.
He broke it 2 days before worlds doing off ice jumping.
You can sure tell I’m not an elite athlete. I’d be crying for morphine. Danny’s like NBD, I’m just going to skate at Worlds and get us Olympic spots and spots for next years Worlds.

When I said earlier that his boot would protect his foot like a cast and if he had a high pain threshold he'd be able to skate, I was basing that on having once cracked one of the many small bones in my foot, jumping down from a bus arriving at a competition venue. Obviously he did a much more serious job and a stiff boot wouldn't be enough, so I can see why the two-footed landings etc. Did anyone say which foot it is? If it's his right, then landings and pickings would really stab. A lot of physio ahead.

In looking at pictures of him in the boot, it is his right foot.

Danny is absolutely amazing. Going to Worlds and competing with his usual smile took a lot of courage. Now, it becomes apparent why Danny had that slight double-footed landing on the sbs jump in the sp, which is very uncharacteristic for him. Yet still, it was only a slight doublefoot. I didn't notice it until the replay. He went through the rest of the event without anyone watching realizing he had a foot injury! 😯 That is so brave. And it reminds us anew of what athletes go through. Quite often, less than stellar performances are connected to injury or other situations fans are unaware of.

I love how on his IG post Danny praises Ellie as well as their teammates, Alisa and Misha! Now, I grasp a greater understanding of the look on Ellie's face when she and Danny hugged each other after the fp. They made it through a greater challenge than viewers and naysayers realized.

If they do what they're capable of, Chan/Howe are the best shot at it.
Umm, not sure about that... Remains to be seen. C/H have been struggling since his shoulder surgery which slowed their 2022-23 season momentum. Plus, C/H (esp Emily) have generally been hit or miss on jump elements.

Usfigsk might send McBeath/ Parkman or Alisa/Misha to the Olympic qualifying event, although C/H are probably also in the running. Hopefully, Alisa can somehow secure U.S. citizenship soon (we have no idea where it is in the process), especially if in fact they are married, which shortens the time frame to become a U.S. citizen. Alisa might squeak by with married status, especially coupled with her stellar athletic representation for the U.S. Of course, the probability isn't looking good at this point. If Alisa/ Misha don't make the Olympics, they will surely be sent to 2026 Worlds.

Second and third Olympics spots in pairs for the U.S. will most likely be vied for by McBeath/Parkman; Chan/ Howe; Shin/Nagy; and Val/Max. But only the strongest team would be sent to the Olympic qualifier in Beijing. Current strongest U.S. pairs teams are Ellie/ Danny and Alisa/Misha. However, Danny is going to be recovering from foot surgery in the off-season, while Ellie hopefully can work on throw landings with Meekins. If Chan/ Howe can bounce back stronger, they have had more competitive rep with international judges, but McBeath/ Parkman are looking more solid recently.

Alisa/Misha cannot be sent to the qualifier because they were one of the pairs who contributed to earning the spots at Worlds last week.

I’m astonished that USFS, which was informed of the extent of Danny’s injury, permitted him to skate. Their routine requires him to lift and carry another human being and to be responsible for her safety. I get that they want to represent their country and are very competitive people, but allowing him to skate in these circumstances seems very irresponsible to me.

Can they send a pair who already skated at Worlds? I know they sent Vincent to the last one but he didn’t make the free.

They can send a team that skated at worlds BEFORE 2025 and who did not skate at the just completed worlds. So E/M an K/O are ineligible but all our other teams are eligible for the event.

P.S. Danny is a warrior; beneath that smile is guts, pride determination and a high threshold for pain tolerence.

They must have really wanted the spots. USFS isn’t known for their good judgement.

Danny indicates on his IG that the extent of his injury was not known when the decision was made for him to compete at Worlds. It was after the event that the break was discovered. Plus, it was up to Danny and his doctors anyway. USfigsk only stayed informed and made their final decision based on the doctor's diagnosis and how Danny himself felt in regard to managing pain. No one knew at the time the extent of the injury. His foot was wrapped and precautions were taken, obviously. It was courageous of Danny. He wanted to compete, and it was important as well at this crucial time for the future of U.S. pairs discipline to be able to send two teams to Worlds as talented and promising as Ellie/Danny and Alisa/Misha.

Alls well that ends well. After-the-fact bemoaning is wasted energy. I'm happy for these teams and for the U.S. pairs discipline, which for once and for all, deserves a ton of respect and admiration!

You mean he injured it 2 days before Worlds. Danny himself said it was NOT known to be broken when first examined. I do not know whether it is because x-rays were not done or the break didn't show at first. In any case, it was not learned that his foot was broken until after Worlds took place. Danny had even skated in the exhibition post-event.

It's possible to put a serious crack in a bone that would heal if rested, but after repeated poundings over days of jump practice and then performance the crack deepens until it finally splits in an open fracture. (Quoted from my pairs partner, a trauma surgeon who specializes in sports injuries.)
