2025-26 U.S. Pairs Figure Skating

Winter had posted she was looking for a partner and now this…could it be?!?!

I had earlier posted a link to a substack interview with Winter Deardorff. She has been skating in shows. It would be wonderful to see her find a good partner and return to competitive pairs skating.

But boy, I would be surprised to see Max Settlage come out of retirement to re-pair with his former partner, Winter! Max had retired years ago due to injuries. He's currently 33 years old. But there has been a trend for older skaters returning to compete.

Max can land jumps very well. When he has issues, it's likely due to being anxious for Val or looking over at her and missing on jumps himself, as a result. Of course, Val has been consistently unreliable with jumps and throws. They are both strong on other elements, especially lifts. The problems of consistently competing sbs jumps for many pairs athletes, brings into question what the reliable training techniques are for pairs skaters, and why it's so hard to correct jumping difficulties in pairs.

Chan/ Howe skated a clean sp at Trialetti Trophy with 71+ score. They fought hard at SA, and actually landed their sbs jumps in the fp. It was the errant second throw that kept C/H from winning the surprise bronze medal, secured by Laurin/ Ethier. But, despite missing the podium, at least, C/H win $6,000 prize money for finishing an unexpected 4th.
I remember Val working hard on jumps during Max's recovery- she would post instagram clips- but maybe it's a technique problem as you say, which will be hard to correct.

Winter had posted she was looking for a new partner. Maybe she found one and Max is choreographing?
I’ve always sympathized with her, she’s had so many problems.

Congrats to E/M for their silver and K/O for their bronze at Finlandia!! Both their programs were very well done.

M/P had a pretty disastrous free skate at Warsaw Cup but it's good to get those bad skates out now and not at Nationals.
M/P seemingly have had more difficulties with their fp this season. Hopefully, they will work things out over the coming weeks, as 2026 U.S. Nationals is early in January.

Golden Spin - So so proud of Shin/Nagy for ending this part of the season on such a high note!! Also congrats to Plazas/Fernandez for getting silver with a good free. As I expected Liu/Bedards issues with jumps and throws are really hurting them and their free skate overall. Actually today not a single usa pairs women had a clean jump...

Onwards to Nationals

I couldn't find their fanfest to post it but here is Shin/Nagy fs. I loved seeing Audrey happy. :)

Yep, the sp video is also up on YouTube. They look good. I think it helped for them not to be assigned to Skate America. It looks like they took the time to settle, regroup, and rethink some things. Shin/Nagy have changed their sp to Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rouge. There's an IG post of S/N with Tessa Virtue announcing that Virtue choreographed their new sp. I thought their Godfather sp was okay. But the new one has more fire and energy. It looks like Virtue has been helping Audrey open up more and emote more, which has been one of the missing pieces for the S/N partnership.

It takes time for a new team to come together, and for a singles skater to adjust to pairs. It's nice to see S/N feeling more comfortable together on the ice, and Audrey opening up more and apparently feeling more confident. Before she looked uncertain and cautious, which is understandable. But all props to Audrey for making the transition from singles to pairs in the first place. Despite her sensitive demeanor, becoming a pairs girl means she's made of tough stuff. Same goes for Ellie Kam who has weathered so much. Both of these strong ladies need to believe in themselves and trust their unique journeys.

I must say, Plazas/ Fernandez also looked very strong at Golden Spin. Their videos are also up on YT. Val has seemingly began figuring out the jumps and the throws in competition. 👀 I don't recall ever seeing Val look this good on jumps and throws. But, this time, it's the formerly steadier Max who is having trouble with his jump landings. Sigh. But the throws look solid. If Max gets his act together and Val remains as confident, there will be a very exciting battle at U.S. Nationals.

Unfortunate for Liu/ Bedard on having a less than strong showing at Golden Spin after starting out so well together this season. I hope Chels can figure out a way to fix her landing issues.

An interesting interview with Alisa & Misha by Russian sports journalist, Maya Bagryantseva, who resides in the U.S. The article is translatable to English, or the link may pop up already translated to English.

It is not looking very good at the moment for Alisa to get her passport waiver. It might have helped had they fared even better on the GP and made GPF. At least, they won silver at Finlandia Trophy with a memorable outing.

As much as I wish things were different, I do not believe the US Federation has THAT kind of influence with the Immigration authorities. Even if Alisa/Misha had won a World medal in Boston it might not been enough. So I doubt very much that their non-participation in GPF has made any difference in that regard.
From the interview it is clear they have been very realistic about it. They have other goals rather then Milano this season. For me personally, Alisa landing all her sbs jumps in Finland means more than all Olympics put together. I was seriously worried about her this season. But they got past the difficult start of the season and produced once again 'the skate which almost goes beyond skating' [citing Chris at Boston] ! Touching the hearts of people.

I said jumps not throws :) Just making a comment that none of them made positive goe on jumps
Thanks for making your distinction about positive GOE. What you said earlier is: "not a single usa pairs woman had a clean jump..." I haven't seen Liu/ Bedard's performances at Golden Spin, but certainly both Audrey and surprisingly, Val, landed clean sbs jumps. No matter that persnickety judges decided not to deem the jumps worthy positive GOE.

U.S. Nationals should be exciting in all disciplines, especially the battle for second and third spots in men & ice dance, and all placements in pairs. Predictions are difficult to make, but I'm giving it a shot here for pairs:

I hope Kam/ O'Shea win, which is important for their confidence and how they are viewed status-wise going into Olympics and Worlds. Misha & Alisa will not make the Olympic team, so it won't be helpful for K/O or the U.S. if E/M win Nats over K/O.

Kam/ O'Shea
Efimova/ Mitrofanov
Shin/ Nagy
Chan/ Howe
McBeath/ Parkman
Plazas/ Fernandez
Liu/ Bedard
Flores/ Wang
Williams/ Lewer
Fitzpatrick/ Bearinger

A smaller entries list than in recent years, as Cooke/ Kennedy withdrew on 12/1

Kam/ O'Shea should make the Olympic team, I would guess and hope with Chan/ Howe, as this is seemingly C/ H's final season? Then K/O; E/M; and S/N for 2026 Worlds team.

To be fair, of course, Efimova/ Mitrofanov should get the points and the win if they skate better at U.S. Nats than Kam/O'Shea, regardless of Olympic team assignments, perceptions, and prospects.

Obviously, Efi/Mit and K/O are the two best, most equally accomplished U.S. pairs team based on their respective abilities, performance results, and current standings.

No, @bckabck, I haven't seen any retirement comments by Danny either way. I doubt that he's focusing on thinking about that right now. They are focused on training for U.S. Nationals and the Olympics. If he's healthy, feeling good, and still motivated, hopefully he will come back for at least one more season. The question in my mind is what might Ellie decide to do if Danny retires? Ellie is still quite young and capable of competing for another quad or two, if she can find another great partner, which ain't easy.
