2026 Olympics: General Info and Pregame Chat

Do I really want to put my alarm for 355am to watch the RD of the team event ?
So I can be frustrated with judges ? So I can watch RD that we despised all season ?

Dilemma dilemma dilemma
Come on, babe, we've all done that. @elektra blue and I did it 24/7 - our finest hour was in Jan/Feb 2020, it was crazy, beautiful, mad and a constant feeling of being outta this world! :jump3::love4::bsplit:

I for one am on pins and needles about the ladies. I wish I had the confidence and nerves to make predictions, but I don't even know which of the three U.S. ladies is most likely to be a podium threat, nor which of the three Japanese ladies, nor which of a surprising number,of European hopefuls will put it all together. As for Adeliia Petrosyian, she might win by 30 points or she might finish 15th.

Now that I see you in here, I meant to ask you - are those two skulls you have on the table anybody we know? 💀

And just what is in those bottles? 🍾

In all seriousness, I hope you will be joining us LIVE from the start for all the action tomorrow. It wouldn't be the same without you.

1: i won't confirm nor deny any of your alligations
2: do you need to ask? :ROFLMAO:
i'll be there tomorrow, i'll come up with something

and we're still able to remember that for i don't know what miracle :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I will unfortunately have to miss Ice Dance due to the awful timing. Too late to stay up, too early to wake up. I might watch pairs and will most definitely watch the women. Have to stay I'm very glad the individual events are during afternoon and evening.

The other FS events are on at later times… why couldn’t there be consistency?! It much more exciting to watch the events in real time but I already know that 03:55 is not doable😢.

And I am the opposite - I would prefer if all the skating was held at the earlier times! (Maybe afternoon rather than morning, though, as there are other sports that I would want to watch which are being held in the morning).

Watching skating in the evenings doesn't really work for me.

Looking on to tomorrow I actually feeling less stressed than I thought I would be, first of all I am so glad I seemed to have secured an access to all the events thanks to the discovery plus at the cost of cup of coffee ! (And mind you in many places in Italy €4.99 won’t buy you coffee!) A few days ago I was not sure if it was possible in Ireland. So a massive relief here. Secondly as no one of my absolute favourites who I am truly invested emotionally in, is taking a part in the TE so I can relax and just enjoy watching, mind you it can change if France progresses to FS then Adam is quite capable of giving me a heart attack. 🫣
All in all looking forward to tomorrow, just that minor difficulty of having to go to the office …my poor boss has no idea that for next two weeks it will be a case of looking very busy but getting very little done 😁

I think it is the most competitively interesting discipline. In the other events, the medalists will probably come from a pool of 5 each - maybe fewer.

In the ladies? Who knows? All three Americans, all three Japanese, the Russian neutral, a couple of Europeans... toss in a Korean for good measure. That's at least 10 medal possibilities that I don't think anyone would be completely shocked. Skating clean is going to be mandatory to avoid being lost in the shuffle very quickly.

Same here. The impact is worse because Kaori is doing both , and possible Alissa.
Ami and Mone not doing any both capable of beating Kaori and alyssa .
Adelina for me has to be spot on to get the very high impossible scores to beat.

It could be a Japanese sweep or American sweep in women highly unlikely but possible.
The Korean ladies, Loena, Nina petrokina can spoil.
Honest the 12 women could take medals the 3 u.s. , 3 Japanese, 2 belgium, adelina, Nina peteokina, 2 Korean. Lara. T

if you take out the AINs, it's just the same every year for worlds... and that's why Canada is stuck with one woman... cracking the top ten is quite difficult when 6 spots are already taken by Japan and the USA.

It's time ISU does like swimming :). 2 athletes max per event :).

I am waiting for the rocks to be thrown at me with a smile.

Every country gets 2 spots, countries that don't have enough skaters to fill the spots, pass them to Japanese men, no matter if the spot is for women, ice dance, pairs. I could live with that

Way back in the day when I was swimming in high school, it was very common for the American men swimmers to sweep podiums in swimming. In 1976, the American men won every swimming gold except one (and they took the other two medals in that one).

Since then, as you note, entries are limited to two per country, and the range of swimming medals are much greater. Many more countries took their swimming programs more seriously, and American dominance has been cut such that the American men won only one individual title in Paris. Many more countries are medaling now. Bad for America, perhaps, but much better in establishing swimming as a truly global sport. I think on balance, the change has been good for swimming.

The same concept applies to gymnastics, where only two per country advance to individual finals. The change was bad for the traditional powerhouses back in the day (the Soviet ladies often took all the medals) but better for the sport globally. Thirty years ago, nobody could have predicted Olympic champions from Italy, Brazil, or Algeria.

Yup. That's where I'm going with my two spots for everyone granted they reached a standard score.

I had a great swim today. 2600 meters including a 400 îm race. Where's my 🏅?

here 🥇now go to bed early or you won't be able to enjoy ice dance hot mess with us

Actually I could go along with the 2 spots maximum for a country, because when you put the Russians back in, automatically there go 9 spots unless the US loses a spot; I can't see Russia or Japan doing so. Once every country who had two REALLY good skaters in the program, with world minimums not a problem, we could see about allowing an additional person or duo (pairs/ice dance) in from a country or countries with the highest scoring trends. The only other thing I could think of in order to more easily allow 2 entries per event for a given country is, change the requirements of needing skaters to finish 10th or better. Not sure how to go about it, but it comes down basically to three countries in particular taking up far too many event entries, and only 1 country per year who finishes in the Top 10 gets to add someone else (unless the countries with 3 each have some skaters who badly mess up on a segment).

Of course I'm only talking about Worlds! Europeans and 4CCs are fine with 3 per country. Olympics is kind of a joke, to me--I mean the figure skating part of it. I just can't take it seriously at all, it's so watered-down and over-hyped. As for Grand Prix, a country with lots of high-ranking skaters should be able to have at least 18 spots--only make it for 9 skaters, not 10 or 11 with some only getting one spot apiece.

And, how about more than six finalists in each event? Often finishers 7 & 8 are podium-worthy--except for one bad segment. How about 8, or even 10 per Final? For each discipline?

I'll admit I like what the Russians have done with their version of Grand Prix--3 flights per each discipline, even though they have 5 Grand Prix instead of 6 (and there are fewer skaters in Russia than in the entire rest of the world), plus I'm hoping for Russia to rejoin the rest of us sooner than later! (They are athletes, not politicians.) Then, their GP Finals have 2 flights of each discipline. I think our world is big enough to find enough high-quality skaters to qualify for those kinds of GPs--we'd need 54 each Men and Women (two spots each), 45 Ice Dance duos, and 36 Pairs couples. It would boil down to 18 men and women at Finals, 15 Ice Dancers, and 12 Pairs couples and that doesn't seems unreasonable to me. Of course there would need to be new rules about qualifications. Just no lessening of minimums.

Sorry for going so off-topic...it's something that's been on my mind and seems semi-related, in a way.

I will be working when the team event begins and unable to watch until I get home to my tv. May I trust my friends to cheer on my behalf for my US skaters and those of all nations to have skates that they can feel proud of. Thanks in advance!

😍 To all the skaters who will be living a lifelong dream - may you finish proud of your efforts 🫶
