When are Ice Dancers doing the FD supposed to 'declare' themselves, anyhow? After the Men's SP which starts in an hour and 15 minutes? I thought declarations had to happen sooner than that...

I'm pretty sure it's not starting until later? Like 8 hours from now? The men don't seem to have declared themselves either.

Yes--when I viewed the event times, I mistakenly got them 12 hours too early--lol! My own fault entirely.

Jackie Wong/Rocker Skating is reporting that if Canada qualifies for the Team Event Final, then Lajoie/Lagha will be substituted in for Gilles/Poirier.

Understandable choice as it is very clear the judges in this team event want Canada nowhere near the medal podium. Team Canada has clearly been the most underscored nation here. The Canadian judges need to learn to be as dirty and messy as the other nation’s judges, specifically Great Britain and China here, and France in other events throughout the season. These nations are cheating to get the results they want and Canada is never going to get the results they desire unless they play the same game. Canada and Italy and any other nation that is willing to form an alliance with them are going to have to stoop down to the level of the IAM judges to rig the results too.

These are predetermined results à la Nagano 1998 ice dance all over again and the nations that are playing too nice need to fight fire with fire.

At this point, it doesn't matter anymore. Canada did indeed get some dirty work by some judges. It's blatant. However, though sometimes I wish Canadian judges played just as dirty, I'd rather see judges doing their jobs correctly. I don't care if they positively score their own team but when they lowball direct competitors as well, this is enough to change the results and it's what I'd call cheating. So yeah. I am not happy about the judges here and I'd be very surprised if Lajoie and Lagha even get a chance to skate this afternoon.

Schizas should not have lost the SP to Gubanova and Gilles/Poirier should not have lost to Fear/Gibson in the RD. In a fair world, they would have 2 more points right now. This sport at this moment in time is in a very dark place. Under-rotations are marked down for some skaters on some jumps, but it’s not equitable when the judges want to manufacture a result for their medal favorites. The judges too easily fix the GOEs they give out to some skaters to skew the results they want. Bloc judging rears its ugly head the most in an Olympic season, but the ISU lets these nations/judges get away with it with no real or lasting consequences. All the online skating podcasts have called out the unfair judging given to Canada here. Maybe artificial intelligence really is the right direction for the sport to go because clearly we can’t count on humans to have the integrity or dignity needed to produce fair results. Sorry, I don’t mean to hijack this thread with my ISU Needs Reform soapbox; this is my last post on the matter in this thread.

Really not trying to be that person, because I did follow the Candian Skating thread for the season, and after watching all your skating entries I fully agree- but if we had a two-time Olympic Champion recently releasing a thesis on this exact topic, Olympic Champions from decades ago even saying that the judging system cant be carried on like it is right now in the future and the ISU still does nothing... then these judging schemes are a feature, not a bug.

I agree on both counts. What is even more frustrating is that in a "ranking" competition, this type of placement is not just removing 2 points to Canada but it is destroying its chances to improve their medal hopes.

For instance... Let's just put these two results reverse.

Italy would be at 22, Canada 21, Georgia 19 and France would be at 17.

Let's go further and imagine that Jia was underscored. That would remove one point to Italy.

We'd have Italy 21, Canada 21, Georgia 19, France 17

Very different from the
Italy 22, Georgia 20, Canada 19 and France 17.

Not only the current results may exclude Canada from the final round but it has pretty much destroyed any chance of a bronze medal.

In the way I did rank skaters (and I am sure I am not alone, and I know, everyone is biased) Canada would have a much better chance to qualify for the final and even a slim chance at the podium.

But the ISU doesn't care... especially not when Canada is involved. It's like we used all of our sympathy capital in 2002 and have been paying since then. Cue in the team event 2022.

I am reminded of the distant past when all 14 positions in ice dance were determined before the event happened....

I agree with you.... after all the cheating I saw in the last century, a judging "cold war" is not the answer....And there are some countries that encourage and thrive on cheating due to their culture. I have seen enough of that...but what is worse is seeing how and why entities allow it to happen. And how it all came into being.

Just curious if you read Oly Judge Jon Jackson's book, "On Thin Ice" about the failed insurection against the ISU?

I think Canada needs to learn to play 'dirtier' as a Fed in general, not because that's right (to the contrary other Feds should model Canada) but because other Feds will not ever play nice and it's absolutely clear at this point there will not be consequences for that, at least not any time in the near future. I'm pointing out the obvious now but their release of Fournier Beaudry for this season is another example. Almost no other Fed would have released her to skate with Cizeron in an Olympic Year when their own Fed otherwise had a medal contending team.

Canada should be a powerhouse Fed but they just don't seem to want any power.
