Adam was the best for me in the SP. I was surprised because he has had issues all season. I didn't even put him in my top five for the skate picks because I had no idea where he could finish... I hope he makes the podium,. His step sequence was awesome.

Unfortunate step out for Yuma on the axel.

I also liked Cha a lot. So much better for him than the team event.

Stephen did very well, another one with an unexpected axel step out after landing two beautiful quads.

The 3 American men did very well but I was emotionally invested in Max so all my love went to him.

In general it was a very well skated event and I enjoyed it very much. I won't be able to watch the LP live... (some people need to work) but I am looking forward to watch the event replay on Friday night.

AIN skater Gumennik last skated internationally in 2021-2022 season (apart from Chinese qualifier and was 1st Alt for Russian team in 2022 Olympics. He won silver and bronze in two successive JWCs two-three years prior to that. He was one of men who had small stature in early teens, but grew rapidly in late teens which impacted his jumps. He is now full adult height with improved jumping content and stability. It was not typical for him to double a triple in the last season, probably because his laces fell apart). He had to switch the music a few days prior to competition because his team did not secure the Olympic-appropriate music rights.

I am thrilled for Adam. Trying to think of some strategy to survive Friday. And it is Friday the 13th ! My blood pressure goes up when I just think about it...
Mad at Aleksander Selevko, all went so well and then to fall on 3lz after a beautiful quad and 3axel! It is just so cruel, he probably relaxed just a little too soon? He is the best natural dancer I ever seen.
All is all it was a great competition. If ISU really proceeds with its plan for an artistic program without jumps nobody is going to watch FS it is an idiotic idea.

It's going to be a Friday 13th for all skaters, and if they all "men", well, it won't be the first time that men are menning?
I realised decades later that my husband and I had met on a Friday 13th. I suppose that, if it had a detrimental effect on our love and had we met another day, we would have died of love since?

(For those who don't have a Christian religious culture, Jesus Christ was crucified and died on a Friday, 13th of the Hebrew month of Nizan; there has been a longstanding superstition, that a 13th day of a month was nefarious if a Friday — strangely, in some places, it's a lucky day, French lottery has or had special draws on Fridays 13th. I don't know when the superstition itself started, but the Roman had nefarious days every year, as still have several cultures.)

Nobody of the Top 23 finishers got an UR call and only 3 jumps in total were called underrotated (Donovan's 3A, Hyungyeom Kim's 3A and Kuliss's 4Lz) the tech panel was very lenient.

Anyway, I rewatched some of the top performances last night, Junhwan Cha's skate was my favourite after that, he should have been higher in the rankings. There were several really special step sequences performed last night - Junhwan, Kevin, Adam and Yuma's were all top notch,

He fought through growth. He won bronze in JWC in 2019-2020 after silver in 2018-2019. It looks like his laces untied during the 4Lz-2T combo as well, so this can also explain lack of precision in short. Hope he tapes his laces for the free tighter.

Loved the comment "men are menning!" Not sure what it means but I like the sounds of it!

I thought Adam AND Jun looked the best they have all season. Jun particularly has found a new love for skating and it shows. Best I've seen him since he left Toronto. I was also impressed with Gogo and Andrew. Sato leaves me cold - no personality there. But I think my favorite short program of all time is Yuma's. The choreography is wonderful and he's so darn cute doing it.

To be fair to Petr, he had to change his music in the the last week or so. His original SP was to the Perfume: The Story of a Murderer soundtrack, but suddenly he couldn't get clearance to use the music, which had been successfully cleared for other skaters like Carreira & Ponomarenko.

I heard about this! Is this...suss? Like, do you think the people who owned the copyright refused it because even though he's competing as a neutral we all know he's Russian? Or is there a reasonable explanation? Because if not that's pretty messed up.

Seems unfair he's been using it all season thus far and suddenly the copyright holders are like "Oh hey, you can't use that!" They could have maybe told Petr this earlier?

I really don't know the details. There appears to be a different system for the Olympics. Quite a few skaters have had to make arrangements on the fly or else go back to an old program.

The trouble with soundtracks is that there may be different artists or licensing agents involved for different songs. He had competed with this program at Skate to Milano without problems.

Interesting... the Olympics is known for being very strict about copyright - like any news station that's not Ch 9 here in Aus can only show veeeery limited footage from the Olympics. And they always have the warning at the start about no rebroadcasting without the express written consent of the Olympic Committee blah blah.

Still a shame for Petr, hopefully his Free goes better!

Prince was really stingy about rights when he was alive, but his estate has not cared at all. I'm not surprised he had no issues. Other skaters had to change Prince programs before the Olympics due to rights issues. (Les Gacs, at least)

Czech TV broadcasted Short Programs of 17 men. We could watch the height and air time of men.

I compared the height of all quad jumps and triple axels.

One exception - Kevin Aymoz's 3axel was not measured....?

Sure it is just indicative. Skater is more tired in the second half of the program. Different type of jump means different take off. Ilia is entering 3axel literally from steps.

But if you are interested, take a look.

there is a comment in the men's short thread about this. There are two sets of rights - use of music and live performance and the team only secured one of those if I understood correctly. See that thread for better explanation.

Sad for Litvintsev not qualifying. He is a skater I have liked for many years but he hasn't progressed very far. I had been looking forward to seeing that fabulous "Joker" LP again *sigh*.

He is my guilty pleasure. I absolutely love it when he skates. Soar or splat, he makes me smile.

I'd put the French judge to shame if I was on a panel when he was competing. I'd skew things so hard he'd knock Yuma and Ilia off the podium.

What a night! Ice is slippery, and menning happened in full swing. It started quietly, even though Kao had a bit of a redemption skate, fall and all. Still, Li-Yu showed his stamina, Slovakian Adam did not do well, Donovan did as expected (though I missed his hip swinging), and then things started to happen. Stephen nearly made me cry in the step sequence (level 4 I think) because it was so to the music and Stephen wasn't known for that (until today), I was proud of Petr who also skated well - this is the bit where everything is still normal, some good, some not so good. and then, Shun also skated (quite) well, Nika went up (seems he finally realised he had to use his church knee bend - sorry can't help it, I stole the phrase from someone else), Daniel went down, French Adam had a bad skate, so did Yuma. Mikhail was succesful, and I was so happy for him, even though I don't admire his choreo and skating skills, and then came Ilia. I felt so sorry for him. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Even the backflip wasn't landed on one leg (although he wanted to). Junwhan had a nasty fall, but ended in 4th, good for him. He is so wonderful to watch. As is Deniss. Andrew was only 12th, and he had a great skate (especially the musicality and the choreo). Glad to see Kevin was alright. There's loads I haven't even mentioned but I am still flabbergasted. At least Ilia is taking home the team medal gold (probably cold comfort for him, but still). But, seeing someone get the gold who didn't expect it, was a real joy. As was Yuma's joyful respect for Shun. Yay!
