I just saw a practice run from Petr and is it just me or is it highly inappropriate to choose a music with a gunshot for his program in a current situation…
Well, Onegin is a classic and a duel has a crucial importance in the story (written by Pushkin, who died shot in a duel himself). One may consider the sound effect too literal, but I wouldn't say it's inappropriate (not more than Gladiator and the likes). It's part of the story.

I am not saying that it’s not appropriate as a part of the story, but it’s not appropriate for Russians to choose it when they compete in the times of Ukraine facing the war.

I understand, and I find the IOC stance hypocritical on the whole, but in this case it's not a war-themed program, just a (beautiful) story set in the 1800s.

May all the guys have the skates of their lives. My stash of candles is restocked. I'm not ready.
Me neither, I need to make at least three more jugs of lemon balm tea for my poor nerves, otherwise I will not make it through the event in one piece i'm afraid. The emotional turmoil starts early with Kao in the very first group. Please light one of your candles for him.

In my boy's school they had to switch off the bells in Spring 2022 because there were cases of kids from Ukraine panicking when the bell rang, thinking it's the aircraft alarm and the war is already in Poland. I wasn't happy wasn't I had to explain this to my 8 yo. Surely and understandably, the AIN may not know about or understand this kind of connotations /s but one may think there is at least one person in his team with enough life and PR experience to cut off this particular sound so that there is nothing to rant about.

Exactly this - and I saw the interview with Kyrylo when he was saying that Russians should not be there and I fully agree with his feelings, even though these are neutral athletes it is Kyrylo home rink that was destroyed.

Some updates on Kao Miura Bootgate: turns out during the SP, he was wearing his backup pair of boots, which were a lot less broken in and therefore less comfortable for him. He's back to using those newer boots for his practice session today after having a scary amount of tape on his boots yesterday, and so far, has been doing great in practice. Hopefully they are now broken in and comfortable enough for him that he can have a redemption free skate.

I just imagined the whole team slamming his boots with stuff and stomping on them like you do with pointe shoes to make them ready for today :laugh4:

Figure skating is a beautiful sport where skaters train for their whole lives to show their best at top competitions. I no way believe that any of them would want to attack the feelings of somebody in the audience.

Gun shot represents the duel of Onegin and Lenski, followed by choreographic interpretation of Onegin's regret of the pointless fight. Gun shot is not connected to war like @bartlebooth mentioned.

Oona & Gage Browns are not at the Olympics, but their Godfather program has movements visibly portraying violance in Choreo Step Sequence and the ending pose - she kills him.

Ilia Malinin's Short Program is about warrior and fight.

Niina Petrokina's and Mikhail Shaidorov's and Olivia & Tim's Dune - the movie is about war conflict.

As to sound effects there are more programs including this.

From past Elena Ilinykh & Nikota Katsalapov won Junior Worlds Championships 2010 skating to Schindler's List using the gunshot sound at the end.

Philippe Candeloro and his famous D'Artagnan program from 1998 - sound of sword's fight.

This season there are other skaters as well:

Emilea & Vadym's Romeo & Juliet - the sound of sword's fight during the dance.

Stephen Gogolev's Short Program - in the beginning there is the sound effect of loading the weapon with choreography portraying that. Later in the program there is the sound effect of gunshot with movement of shooting.

I no way believe Benoit Richaud ment anything bad with both choreographies. Or skaters.

I do not closely follow all topics from competitions. Was there any complain about innapropriate sound effects used by those skaters?

In the same moment I fully understand and feel sorry for people who came through some tragedy and the sound of weapon makes them coming back to the terrible memories like @Karoltyna mentioned.

Maybe it is possible to take this topic to ISU congress and ask ISU to rethink that such sound effects or clear portraying of killing someone (but it would go to Carmen and Romeo & Juliet ending as well) is not recommended.

I do not fully understand.

Do you mean that sound effects of weapon are OK with athletes who are not Russians? For example US dance team and Canadian skater?

While it is not appropriate in case of Russian athlete?

I have to correct you in this case.
If people are suffering from tragedy and the sound of weapon brings their memories back, they definitely don't distinguish between sound effect in a program of Russian or sound effect in a program of non-Russian skater. Simply every sound effect of weapon frightens them.

I don't have a problem with programs having violent or warlike overtones. I don't even have a problem with openly sensual or erotic nuances.

Sex and violence. Bring 'em on. Let's put some butts in seats.

Personal note: I need to add Onegin to my reading list. Who can recommend a good translation?

Just arrived to the arena and there is currently last warmup group practice ongoing. Once again Ilia isn't there though.

Good news: I will be watching this from home!
Bad news: I tweaked my neck badly yesterday in an attempt to relieve some minor neck pain (how ironic...). The pain got worse last night and I'm hoping staying at home will help heal it...
