2026-27 Canadian Figure Skating

Now we need to get Nathan Lickers a dance partner- he is a favorite of mine.
Two of my granddaughters would join you in the search. The unofficial Nathan Lickers Fan Club. They do both dance, but not to his level, and they're at uni in Scotland with no interest in devoting their own lives to skating. But they'd be very tough on any candidates who wanted to try out with their favourite 👩‍⚖️🤔 .

With the GP assignments out, this is what the National Team should be if the criteria stays the same (podium at Senior Nationals and/or GP assignment, competing in the 2026-27 season):

Men
Stephen Gogolev
Aleksa Rakic
Wesley Chiu

Women
Madeline Schizas
Gabrielle Daleman
Minsol Kwon
Fee Ann Landry
Sara-Maude Dupuis

Pairs
Pereira/Michaud
Kemp/Elizarov
Desrochers/Thrasher

Ice Dance
Lauriault/Le Gac
Veillon/Brandys
Lajoie/Baker
Men

Sad Romsky has retired 😭
GoGo - Solid with a chance to make it to GPF due to his consistency
Wesley - Hurrah
Aleksa - Well deserved

Women

Perfection. I really thought Maddie and Gabby would be given the Skate Canada spots. I was so happy to find out they gave Fee Ann this spot instead. This allows more ladies international exposure. As for the TBD spot, let the best one that skates domestically earn that spot.

Pairs

Lia/Trennt have an opportunity to make GPF.
Ava and Yohnathan I expected
I was shocked Jazmine and Kiernan got an event.
The TBD spot should go to Fiona and Loucas.

Dance

Which one of these teams will be our best. My money is on LaBakerie

Very intriguing season for Canada 🇨🇦

Jazzy and Kiki even have two events :). I guess they took their chances with their silver at j worlds. The number of pairs that have retired or split was an incentive for them... and the new rule. Without the three jump combo in the FP, they can do 2a+2a for their combo which they already can do and use a 2s as a place holder. At some point, they will need to do a 3s or a 3t but they no longer absolutely need to learn two triple jumps. In the SP, some teams have done 2a over the years.. not in the top 5 but stil. The difference is about 1 point in base value and considering their very strong twist and lifts, they can survive.

I am not convinced yet about Fiona and Loucas. We will need to see how they fare. Fiona has been off ice for so long with her injury.

I wasn't. Jr Worlds medalists are automatically included in the selection pool and with so many retirements and/or splits, they really had to dig deep to find enough teams to fill the events. I think there are only 7 teams on the alternate list right now, and all of them already have one assignment, so...
The TBD spot should go to Fiona and Loucas.
I'd personally love to see Miyu and Tristan get the host spot. She is just a ray of sunshine and they've been doing pretty well domestically.

Same - Miyu & Tristan (164.59) were quite close at Nationals to Desrochers & Thrasher (166.71).
Let's give the new teams time to develop their skills first.
Yep, they were definitely on the same level as D/T, and I honestly wouldn't have protested if they had even placed ahead of them at Nationals.

Aside from only having a double twist, they have really solid elements and I assume they'll upgrade the 2LzTh to a 3LzTh in the upcoming season, plus Miyu is just very charismatic.

I definitely hope they'll at least get to compete internationally this season.

JGP selection criteria is up now - https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2026-Selection-to-JGP-and-Jr-Int-Comp-EN.pdf

Looks like 13 spots for Ice Dance from the initial 7. But 5 each for Men and Women when it should be 6 and 4 respectively from previous criteria 🤔
David placed 14th at junior worlds which gives 5 spots for men (on last years criteria): chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://isu-d8g8b4b7ece7aphs.a03.azurefd.net/isudamcontainer/CMS/Fansite/Figure-Skating/2024-2025/Events/Junior-Grand-Prix/Documents/JGP-General-Announcement-2025-26-Final-1747045771-836.pdf He would have needed to place 7-10 for 6 spots. It looks like you have been allocated one extra ladies spot.

The placement goes by country, he was in the 7-10 range for that. Table A from the 2025-26 announcement shows that with China, where they weren't in the top 10 in 2025 JWC but had 6 spots from their result there.

JGP allocations are based on country placement, not absolute placements of the skaters. With 8 of the top 10 placements occupied by three countries, David placing 14th makes Canada the 9th highest placed country. 😊

So... here is an ice dance breakdown

LaLe = Lauriault Le Gac
F/Z= Fournier-Zhu
RoPo = Robinson-Portz
Bakerie (or LaBakerie for those who insist on putting articles everywhere :) ) = Lajoie-Baker
Spa = Sandrine Gauthier and Paul Ayer
Alicia's Nose = Alicia and Marko. Okay.. I am kidding about the last one. :) Let's call them AlMa (soul)

Robert Brodie interviews Mike Slipchuk about Grand Prix assignments.

Has this about Minsol:
Skate Canada has confirmed that Kwon is now fully eligible to represent this country internationally in the 2026-27 season. The question now becomes: where will we see her? Kwon herself had mentioned in Gatineau that she liked the idea of competing for Canada on the Junior Grand Prix, but it might not end up that way.

“I’m not sure where she’s going yet. We haven’t had any of those discussions yet,” said Slipchuk. “The Junior Grand Prix has minimal assignments (and that prodigy Lia Cho is very much in that picture).”

Meaning it’s likely, he added, that any international competition this season “would be as a senior, but no decisions have been made yet.”

That's great news for Minsol and Canada! Sounds like they do not really want her to compete junior and would rather her start as a senior right away. Definitely get the vibe they want her at Skate Canada. I'm happy Fee Ann, Gabby, and Sara-Maude already have an assignment as well, so a great mix of Canadian ladies on the gp. :)

I am glad that Korea have finally released Minsol fully. Let's hope that they aren't as difficult with Hannah Lim...
I doubt it would be considering Hannah is already Canadian and even represented Canada before.

Also, if Ye still represents Korea, it would make more sense... Much easier for him to find a good Korean partner than for Hannah. So perhaps, there is something going on there. (We will release Hannah but we keep Ye... or something). Of course, just an hypothetical thought

Well, there were 6 U.S. pairs teams on the GP last season, and 5 of those teams are now missing on the assignments list due to rules changes, plus 4 splits (several repairings) and 1 probable retirement. Those developments opened up spots.

ETA:
Perhaps two new U.S. teams (out of three repairings) will get the Skate America tbd spots.
