U.S. Ladies Prediction & Speculation Thread

Rachael is reworking her flip, I suspect. She doubled the flip every single time this summer and hasn't landed a triple flip yet. I'm a bit worried. It takes a long time to rework a jump technique. She's determined to fix that jump. Good for her.

Why is she reworking her flip? Is it because of the UR calls at the Olympics? In any case, these early events seem like a pretty good place to try out reworked jumps, since it doesn't matter how you do.

Here's another performance where she seems to double a couple of intended triples:

Anyway, it's not that astonishing. You know, Rachael messed up just as often as every one else last season. She pulled it out when it counted most - at Nationals and the Olympics, just like Mirai did. The Colorado Springs Invite isn't really the place to have the SOHL so I'm not reading too much into it.

Exactly. True.

ITA, but with a month to go before her GP event, I'm a bit worried. She's a fabulous competitor, so I think she'll have a good season, but her scores this season don't really seem to be progressing at this point.

RD, sorry about the confusion...I think I misread your original post, re: Agnes' score. ;)

The question is not how she is doing in September, but how will she be doing in November, come her 2nd GP event? And remember how quickly things change from that period to Nationals. Remember how DITW Nagasu was at SC? Then look two months later at Nationals.

The other question is who does Tom Z see as his new #1 girl. He knows Rachael will be gone after this season - or gone from Colorado Springs - and Agnes might be getting most of his attention these days.

If he could just get her to skate faster.........

ALWAYS better to peak later rather than earlier. I understand some posters' concern, but I'd be more worried if she was blazing down the gates now.

True, but it's also important to get good performances under your belt for confidence issues. Additionally, Agnes has been attempting (and landing) the 3T-3T in her SPs this season, and that will give her experience to draw upon for her Grand Prix events. We've heard that Rachael has been working on the 3Lz-3Lo and the 2A-3T, but haven't seen them in competition yet. Will she be able to pull it off under a high-pressure situation such as a GP event? I guess we'll see...

Nationals should be interesting for sure!

Very nice :) Thanks for that. Who won that competition, any know?

(p.s. Good luck with those downward dogs...)

Adelina Sotnikova, who just turned 14 and put up a score of over 178!

And Christina's flexibility, like Yuna, is not terrible it's just not amazing. Christina's lines will likely become better once she fills out a little bit, already she is less gangly than last year and is picking costumes that are better for her body type, but she's still just in that angular stage right now, and it probably will soon pass. Also, she just needs to be flexible enough to get level 4s on her spins, which she already is getting, and as for GOE the way it's factored for spins, it doesn't boost the score all that much. Plus it often seems like the skaters who are super bendy struggle with jumps, and for someone like Christina who has very strong toe-pick jumps, she may have to keep her muscles somewhat tight so she can continue to jump so well.

Agreed. Watching her over the past few years, she seems to get a slow start to her season and then get better so she peaks toward the time of nationals/worlds. I mean, she's won 2 silvers and a gold at nationals, won junior worlds, and placed in the top 10 at two worlds, in the past 3 years, and yet she han't qualified for the GPF yet and finished 4th at her first GP events with cautious performances for the past 2 seasons. I'm sure she'll get better as the season unfolds, it just seems like she always does.

Like Gao, people seem to hyping the he!! out of Agnes. I suppose we shall see during the GP how she does...

Making "a splash" is not exactly going overboard on hype. I take it to mean she might win a medal at one of her events or atleast show some strong jumps.

Like the other Colorado Springs girls she is on the slow side, and needs to work on some things. But a 3x3 and possibly the biggest 3Lz seen in a while does tend to get noticed these days. I like Christina better but I haven't seen that much of Agnes.

Well, I can't find Adelina's program for this competition but I just watched her peformance from 2009 Russian nationals, when I suppose she was only 13.

Holy Moly. I've never seen a skater who remind me so much of Sasha Cohen. Gorgeous lines. (complete with a fall in this program but let's hope she won't take after Sasha in that respect :) )

Even looks like she's wearing what Tatiana Tarasova would have put Sasha Cohen in 2003 if Sasha hadn't had much better taste.

She'll be 18 or 19 by the time Sochi rolls around. It'll be interesting to see if she develops into a force.

Zawadzki skated her FS a little bit ago. From Sarah and Drew:

A. Zawadzki - 2A-3T, 3F, 3LZ-2T, 3LZ, 3LO, 3S, 3T-2T-2LO. Flawless. Standing ovation from most, including all off duty judges!

From Sarah and Drew:
R. Flatt - 2A-3T, 3LZ-2LO, 3F, 3LZ, 3F-2T-2LO, 3LO, 3S. Very expressive choreo. Another standing ovation!

YAY! I'm so happy for her (and less nervous about her GP debut now... ;))

It will be interesting to see the FS scores for both Agnes and Rachael. They both did 7 triples...Agnes might win out on spins/spirals, but I think Flatt could take the PCS.

We have a lot of talented girls coming up. Christina is doing well, but may possibly put on weight in the next couple of years. I'm actually a little uncomfortable at how thin she is. Agnes is putting up big scores despite being unusually tall. Amanda surprised me earlier this year by getting in medal position after the short at 4CC, but was eventually mule-kicked off the podium. I am worried about Rachael. Yes it's early in the season, but it's early for everyone else. Mirai was injured, and we don't know what kind of shape she will be in.

Layfan, rachael's flipS were DGed at the olympics and at world. From the earlier competiton, it looks like her entry and toe pick for the flip changed. That's why I think she's reworking it.

Rach is the only girl who's routinely doing 7 triples in the long program with 2 lutzs and 2 flips. The other girls repeat easier jumps so even with 7 triples, their score might not be as high, technically.

I'm a bit nervous about her flip, but seeing how she landed 2 just now, it's a big relief for me. :)
