What a pity Japan don't have a pairs team entered, as it will leave them at a real disadvantage in the overall results.

Hopefully it won't be long until Takahashi and Kihara are up to speed - Japan needs you!!!

Oh, and after having a good look at her during the warm-up, it was definitely Peng Cheng that I saw wearing the glasses yesterday.

But they really can't get zero points, right? Why do they give 7-12 points when there are six(five) pairs? Because of two skaters hwell: One point deduction would be fair IMO.

Just wanted to say that it was so funny seeing Gabrielle and Kaetlyn doing the Macarena in the background when Meagan and Eric were waiting for the results! I couldn't help but join in!!!

However, I then had the scary realisation that neither Kaetlyn nor Gabrielle were even born when the song was released!!!

Talk about making a guy feel old!!!

But, I have to say that it was disappointing to see that the American and Canadian teams only had their Ladies skaters supporting their Pairs team-mates. It looked really bad compared to all the other countries had more people acting the eejit in the background.

OK, so the Men's skaters and Ice Dancers both have competitions later on today, and they need to prepare and get in the zone. But, there were not that few people supporting the Ice Dancers when they were first up yesterday.

When you look at this together with what has happened during the entire season (eg. small entries to competitions), Pairs skating is really starting to look like the neglected discipline. Which is a real shame.

Like, even the lack of comments in this thread says a lot!

Wow. I thought Japan would get 7 points for finishing last by default.

They could have put anyone out there -- a novice team or something -- finished last, picked up seven points and be tied with the U.S. for first place overall.

Actually, there is a little imbalance here. In singles, the difference between finishing last and not skatting at all is 1 point (1 for finishing last, 0 for no show). In pairs and dance the difference is 7 points (7 for last place, 0 for no show).

As a matter of fairness, I think it is only right for Japan to receive 0 points for pairs.

To me, it would have been quite outrageous for the absence of any entry to be worth 7 points, when singles competitors who show up but place in the bottom half of their discipline earn fewer than 7.
That would have been a far worse imbalance, IMHO.

In all ISU books Pair skating is defined as the Man and the Lady. I can't see any of this in D/R. Have no idea why their lift, which they performed form the lap because he can't lift her from the ice since she is too short for him, was rewarded higher than V/T's.

VolTran is a classics of this sport, the style that was created by Soviet Pairs with all its purity, athletism and elegance. Good work, Tanya and Max!

Okay, now you're just being ridiculous and picking on every Canadian, it seems. That lift is performed with her in his lap because it's much harder than lifts were the woman is lifted from the ice, and requires a ton of core strength to do that. It got +2's from all of the judges.

V/T's 4Li4 slowed down at the end. And while the spread eagle takeoff of Maxim is difficult, and the exit is creative and difficult (so 2 difficult aspects), D/R's lift had three difficult aspects: lap-to-press-up take off, reversing the lift's direction and then back again while maintaining speed, and the creative exit. Plus D/R had greater ice coverage on their lift. Thus, the higher GOE, which was only slightly higher, at that.

About the Japanese pair, yeah, it does seem fair to give 0 points to them, for the reason golden411 stated.

That's not me. I stole that idea from one Russian coach's interview (she critisized their lift as well). Is she now officially ridiculous and picking on every Canadian? No, you don't have you know what to say that. You are just using the nationalist "point" to deal with an online poster, the thing that you can't afford when you deal with a real person, like a fs coach, for example. Been there, seen that. Anything new?

Even if your team is very bad in Pair/Dance skating , provided you enter a Pair/Dance Team, you can at the most lose 5 Points to the winner, because your score is 7 points at least for 6th place. In comparison with single skating, your team can easily lose 15 or more points with 2 entries from each team (at the most your team can lose 20 points - 1st/2nd place vs. 11th/12th place). So, single skating is so much more important as Pairs/Dance in this competition because you can not gain lots of points (or make a big difference) with Pairs/Dance. So in my opinion the scoring for Pairs/Dance (with only 1 entry) should be changed like: 12-10-8-6-4-2 points for the first 6 places. That would be much fairer for this competition (and more interesting as well).

I think the scoring format was set as it was because Japan does not excel in dance or pairs. (This year it backfired because Japan could not field a pairs team at all.)

IIRC in the initial negotiations between Japanese television and the ISU four years ago, they wanted only a mens and ladies competition. The ISU insisted on including the other two disciplines, in part in the hope that this would encourage Japan to put greater effort into their pairs and dance programs.

It would be like you saying anything positive about Daisuke/Hanyu/Asada/Suzuki and then me automatically dismissing your opinion as biased nationalism just because you happen to be Japanese.

Your location is Japan, though. And Chan is an excellent skater... otherwise he wouldn't consistently score so high on his PCS. Whether he's a consistent skater, that's up for debate, but at the moment you can't really say anyone in the men's field is consistent.
