Not quite. Hanyu, Machida, Takahashi, Chan, Fernandez, Amodio, Joubert, Abbott, Ten, and Kovtun (in Russia) can all get higher marks if they skate well

Jason generally doesn't fall on his jumps. He more prone to two-foots or turnouts as far as his errors on the 3A goes.

I read somewhere ( I am getting dizzy from all the post Nationals threads !!!) that Jason is landig a quad ( don't know which one ) pretty regularly now in practice . Does anybody know if he might put it in for Sochi? I hope he doesn't but I am just wondering........

No way. As much as I love this kid----I noticed him before the us nationals, before the viral, at TEB. He's very good and a joy to watch. He might get Gold in 2010 olympics with this performance, but not in Sochi. There are just too many skaters who have everything, Chan, Hanyu, Javier, Dai, Jeremy, even the Russian kid. There is no way all of them melt down. that being said, I do wish Jason skates his lights out and make a statement for himself for the next cycle. Adding a quad or two he will be right there to compete with the best, and even be the best.

For the record, I didn't think you were being harsh on you assessment.

I didn't think I was either, but I knew suggesting that the kid isn't perfect would ruffle some feathers. I see the potential, but I'm not a "fan". His programs were great for him, but I wasn't sold. I know I'm in the minority. It took me a long time to warm up to Daisuke Takahashi, too, so... I am sometimes slow to the party. But I don't think my assessment is far off... Brown has some "clunky" choreography here and there, that with time will smooth out.

Now I will argue that you may be underestimating the Seahawks' prospects for the NFC Championship on Sunday.

I don't underestimate that. I see it being a huge possibility especially since they're denying access to the stadium for the fans of the Niners for the game. (Don't get me started on how dumb I think that is for both Seattle and Denver to do that.) But they're not winning the superbowl.

Na, I think Jason as he is right now could have medaled in Vancouver or at least placed top five. Evan's 3A was even worse than his and Jason has much better spins and much more transitions than Plushenko had at the time.

Of course there are some overexcited fans here, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss this as just another routine case of someone being prematurely hyped up. Tell me the last time the US public had this kind of reaction to a skating performance, much less one by a man? 2 million views in 4 days...and rising

I'm not making any arguments about his technical skills - just his showmanship/performance skills, and that isn't necessarily quantified by medals

Sorry I didn't make it clear. I meant to say that he could have beaten Evan L who got a gold. Evan was by no means more "sporty" than Jason in any sense, no more difficult jumps, and Jason's transitions into jumps are just beyond Evan's wildest imagination.

Hmmm. No. Lysacek's skiddy Axels teetered on the edge of underrotating consistently. Brown hit 2 good ones, and one not so good one during nationals. So about the same points on average, judged by today's standards though.

Jason started trying the the 3A at his second JGP event in Turkey. However it wasn't until Junior Worlds when he clearly had the jump.

Since U.S. Nationals he has made 3 triple axel attempts at each competition. Since Junior Worlds, Jason has been 5/5 in getting the 3A with +GOE in the short program.

The problem with his 3A has been with the free skate, and more specifically the second 3A in the program. He is 4/5 with the opening 3A combo (and 3/5 for getting +GOE) but he is only 2/5 for the second 3A attempt (and just 1/5 for positive GOE).

Since Junior Worlds: Jason got the jump ratified (no UR, no pop) 11 out of 15 attempts (73 percent). He only popped the jump once out of 15 (7 percent) and only fell once (7 percent).

He does tend to two-foot the jump when he messes up, as a result his +GOE 3A rate is much lower he got +GOE 9 out of 15 attempts (60 percent).

The biggest hurdle with his 3A is specifically the second 3A in his program. When you take out the second 3A attempt in the FS out of the statistics, his ratification rate is 90 percent and his +GOE rate is 80 percent. He also messed up that second attempt (turnout) when I watched him practice at Nationals, which tells me it's a mental thing. What also convinces me that it's a mental thing is that there when I watch him practice the jump , I'd say he was about 95 percent (which matches reports from other practices).

I seriously doubt he's going to be anywhere near the podium. If he skates like he did at Nats and a few other guys have bad days, top ten is an amazing result for him. I can almost see his KnC reactions already.

Absolutely. A top ten finish would be an excellent result for him. Probably the best he could hope for at this point in his career. It is interesting to me how fast my opinion has changed about him this season. I went from not being super impressed at his first grand prix competition (what stuck out to me was that his skating seemed a bit uncontrolled and needed a little polish), to noticing how nice his program was in the next grand prix competition, to seeing him at Nationals and being astonished and moved by his free skate. I'm now a fan and look forward to seeing him hopefully rise through the rankings.

Actually, you all are forgetting that Jason actually DOES have a shot at a gold medal in Sochi...just not in the individual, lol. If they skate Jason in the team event (and I REALLY hope they do!) and the USA wins, boom, he's a gold medalist.

Not super crazy likely BUT far more likely than even medaling individually. I would say that he is looking very strong for top 10 at least in Sochi, higher if he can bottle some of that Nationals magic and make lighting strike twice.

On a different note, it's fairly likely that Abbott will pull out of Worlds (he intends to retire after the Olympics) and Jason will go instead...I would be curious to see how he would place there. Definitely would have a much higher shot at a medal depending on which of the top men decide to go.
