This gala was very somber and serious, a lot of galas in the 90 were much fun, I don't know

I'll help pay for your lasik and heart transplant.I thought they were very boring. Sorry
(snip) Oh, I hope they show Daisuke!
ETA: Alas, they finished without showing Daisuke. .

Sorry, I beg to differ...Agree. NBC has gotten better at showing more sports and less puff pieces in recent years .
I don't think it was caught on most cameras, but CBC showed a replay in a later broadcast. Towards the end, when the guys were making one last trip across the ice, Yuzuru almost butterfly jumped right into Patrick and I believe his blade may have swiped Patrick's shirt.Thankfully there didn't appear to be any damage.
somebody postet a link to some pictures of that in the Patrick Chan Fan Fest thread (I’d post it here, but last time I tried something like that I got automatically bannedTowards the end, when the guys were making one last trip across the ice, Yuzuru almost butterfly jumped right into Patrick and I believe his blade may have swiped Patrick's shirt.Thankfully there didn't appear to be any damage.

1. Starting out prime time coverage with a half hour special about a Russian Orphan instead of showing skaters is not getting better at cutting puff.....put the story elsewhere.
I agree. It was a sweet story, but the athlete is not even a winter athlete...she is a swimmer! The only connection was that she was a Russian orphan and was returning to Russia to meet her birth parents. Yet NBC aired this profile instead of airing another 30 minutes of the gala!
They could have aired this during their closing night recap or, I don't know, saved it for the SUMMER Olympics! :sarcasm:
Yes, I'm glad they did show what they did from the gala...but they could have done much, much better.
I thought it was interesting that they showed P/T instead of either the silver or bronze pairs, but probably the right decision if you had to choose one (which they did not have to do, mind you). That was a nice performance. I probably would've preferred to see S/S and P/T over V/T, but that was hardly going to happen.![]()

3. I can afford cable or dish but choose not to. So I am not privy to on- line or NBCSN content. I personally like biathalon, but it is not that popular outside of the continent. Dump it and
put on the popular GALA in the daytime or prime time or put on a streamer tape on the TV saying that those who are poor with Rabbit ears and VCRs can record the GALA in its entirety at 3 am.
Putting on the Olympics is tough, especially when they keep adding sports events to try and hook the young folk. But cheating the rabbit ears crowd out of the old events like skating was a poor decision. ...
I don't disagree about the puff piece on the orphan and if they had to do it, they could have have done it before closing ceremonies tonight. However, I said NBC has gotten BETTER, not good. I remember when they first got the games, there was puff pieces like that one stuffed between pretty much every event and sometimes multiple per event. There is still puff, but there's not nearly as much as there used to be.
Just saw the exhibitions... I watched the NBC version, so I didn't get to see much. I absolutely enjoyed Virtue & Moir's "Stay" and loved Yuna's "Imagine." I was kind of embarrassed for Adelina--very unfortunate that her props got all tangled. Even if everything worked as planned, however, I wonder how effective the program would've been? Seems like a bad idea.
It hit me while watching V&M and Yuna how much I'll miss them.In general, this Olympics has been very bittersweet for me as things didn't really work out for my favorites--Yuna, Patrick, and Virtue & Moir. And while Mao is not my #1 fave, I really respect her and wanted to see her win if Yuna didn't.
Looking forward, I'm most excited about watching Yulia mature over the next few years. Also impressed with Gracie, but somehow can't really get into her skating.
I'm glad that NBC showed Pang/Tong because: (1) their program was beautiful and (2) they were the only Chinese skaters shown by NBC (and the only Chinese in the entire gala, IIRC).
So I understand why NBC chose them over the silver pair medalists from Russia (already well represented in NBC's gala coverage).
OTOH, Savchenko/Szolkowy were the only Germans in the entire gala, so they would have been an equally good choice.
I agree 100% that programming the Olympics is tough. Impossible to keep everyone happy.
To play devil's advocate:
I did not watch the entire story about the adopted U.S. disabled athlete returning to Russia -- but my hunch is that one of its major purposes was to generate interest for the Sochi Paralympics coming up in a few weeks. And how often do Paralympians get their moment in the sun? I would not begrudge them a nice chunk of prime time once every two years (during the corresponding Olympics right before, I mean).
Similarly, how often does biathlon ever get shown on American television? Are the Olympics its one little moment in the sun every four years, as I would assume? Of course, we at GS would love to see more televised skating, but it is not nearly as rare as televised biathlon, I would imagine. And totally off the top of my head, I would guess that biathlon is as "old" an event as figure skating??
I am a fellow member of the rabbit-ears crowd, and I do not feel "cheated." That is not to say that I would not have enjoyed more gala coverage.
Before the Closing Ceremony tonight, NBC is showing the hour-long documentary "Nancy and Tonya."
So that slot was not available for the Paralympian story.
