Exhibitions?

The gala is being repeated on BBCi2 NOW

Sorry for the late post - I am watching something else and forgot about the repeat. But, they are just doing the introduction at the moment. None of the performances have started yet.

Here are the details on how to receive BBCi2:

BBCi2 is available via:

Digital terrestrial (UK only): Ch. 302 on Freeview
Digital cable (UK only): Ch. 992 on Virgin Media
Digital satellite (Europe): Ch. 978 on SkyDigital
Astra 28.2E, Transponder 76 (12.551V. MBaud 22,000. FEC 5/6).
NOTE: The channel you want for the skating is labelled “BBC RB 2”

Hope this helps

Just now that I remember, can I make a few comments about the Gala.

Firstly, Penny and Nick. They didn't talk too often throughout the night, but when they did, they couldn't stop. There were a few times I was like "WOULD YOU JUST SHUT UP AND LET ME HEAR THE MUSIC!!!"

That said, they did tell a few interesting stories.

I assume they were there because Robin was already on a flight home. "Dancing On Ice" is on tonight, and I don't think Robin wants Nicky Slater to get too comfy in his chair...!!!

Anyway, you know that sketch at the start about Figure Skating at the 1908 Summer Games. Well, I could swear that one of the couples doing that sketch were Victoria Sinitsina and Ruslan Zhiganshin.

The guy was wearing a silly moustache, but he definitely looked like Ruslan! And, although we did not get a good shot of his partner, I have a suspicion that it might have been Victoria.

So, does anybody know for sure?

I absolutely LOVED that music Elena and Nikita were using!

I was a bit upset that we didn't get the "People Are Strange" routine from Nathalie and Fabian - I absolutely love it! But, I have always loved their "Dirty Dancing" routine too (even if it does go a bit weird in the second half!)

And it was obvious that they chose to do it this time because of the meaning of the lyrics ("I've had the time of my life, and I owe it all to you")

Like a lot of people on here, I was also looking forward to Radionova's Zombie number. But, I can understand why she did that traditional music routine... and I loved it!!!

I missed the last few minutes of the finale (my Dad put the TV on, and I couldn't hear the music, so I reluctantly left it). I got as far as the change in music shortly after Sue, Penny and Nick signed off. So, fingers crossed they won't cut the repeat off when they shut up.

Boy, NBC was annoying yesterday! First, they got rid of the planned two hour show on NBC Sports. Then they show only 4 performances in primetime. And then the supposed 1 hour late night show went over so I didn't tape it all.

Thank god I'm able to rerun it on nbcolympics.com. I would've had to go there anyway since I wanted to see some of the people they didn't show.

I thought it was interesting that they showed P/T instead of either the silver or bronze pairs, but probably the right decision if you had to choose one (which they did not have to do, mind you). That was a nice performance. I probably would've preferred to see S/S and P/T over V/T, but that was hardly going to happen.

Agree. NBC has gotten better at showing more sports and less puff pieces in recent years .
Sorry, I beg to differ...
1. Starting out prime time coverage with a half hour special about a Russian Orphan instead of showing skaters is not getting better at cutting puff.....put the story elsewhere.
2. Mary needs to be on the "Today" show, not the Prime time coverage.
3. I can afford cable or dish but choose not to. So I am not privy to on- line or NBCSN content. I personally like biathalon, but it is not that popular outside of the continent. Dump it and
put on the popular GALA in the daytime or prime time or put on a streamer tape on the TV saying that those who are poor with Rabbit ears and VCRs can record the GALA in its entirety at 3 am.

Putting on the Olympics is tough, especially when they keep adding sports events to try and hook the young folk. But cheating the rabbit ears crowd out of the old events like skating was a poor decision.
I used to have VHS recorders...now I use $200 Hard drive burners to record. I wouldn't have minded if they put the skating on at 1 am so I could have recorded it....but they just did reruns....
Chris who has no idea what Bob Costas does for a living....if you edited out all his segments...what would you have really missed?

I don't think it was caught on most cameras, but CBC showed a replay in a later broadcast. Towards the end, when the guys were making one last trip across the ice, Yuzuru almost butterfly jumped right into Patrick and I believe his blade may have swiped Patrick's shirt. :slink: Thankfully there didn't appear to be any damage.

Whoa! Thank-you!

somebody postet a link to some pictures of that in the Patrick Chan Fan Fest thread (I’d post it here, but last time I tried something like that I got automatically banned  )

I agree. It was a sweet story, but the athlete is not even a winter athlete...she is a swimmer! The only connection was that she was a Russian orphan and was returning to Russia to meet her birth parents. Yet NBC aired this profile instead of airing another 30 minutes of the gala!

They could have aired this during their closing night recap or, I don't know, saved it for the SUMMER Olympics! :sarcasm:

Yes, I'm glad they did show what they did from the gala...but they could have done much, much better.

Just saw the exhibitions... I watched the NBC version, so I didn't get to see much. I absolutely enjoyed Virtue & Moir's "Stay" and loved Yuna's "Imagine." I was kind of embarrassed for Adelina--very unfortunate that her props got all tangled. Even if everything worked as planned, however, I wonder how effective the program would've been? Seems like a bad idea.

It hit me while watching V&M and Yuna how much I'll miss them. In general, this Olympics has been very bittersweet for me as things didn't really work out for my favorites--Yuna, Patrick, and Virtue & Moir. And while Mao is not my #1 fave, I really respect her and wanted to see her win if Yuna didn't.

Looking forward, I'm most excited about watching Yulia mature over the next few years. Also impressed with Gracie, but somehow can't really get into her skating.

I don't disagree about the puff piece on the orphan and if they had to do it, they could have have done it before closing ceremonies tonight. However, I said NBC has gotten BETTER, not good. I remember when they first got the games, there was puff pieces like that one stuffed between pretty much every event and sometimes multiple per event. There is still puff, but there's not nearly as much as there used to be.

I'm glad that NBC showed Pang/Tong because: (1) their program was beautiful and (2) they were the only Chinese skaters shown by NBC (and the only Chinese in the entire gala, IIRC).
So I understand why NBC chose them over the silver pair medalists from Russia (already well represented in NBC's gala coverage).
OTOH, Savchenko/Szolkowy were the only Germans in the entire gala, so they would have been an equally good choice.

I agree 100% that programming the Olympics is tough. Impossible to keep everyone happy.

To play devil's advocate:

I did not watch the entire story about the adopted U.S. disabled athlete returning to Russia -- but my hunch is that one of its major purposes was to generate interest for the Sochi Paralympics coming up in a few weeks. And how often do Paralympians get their moment in the sun? I would not begrudge them a nice chunk of prime time once every two years (during the corresponding Olympics right before, I mean).

Similarly, how often does biathlon ever get shown on American television? Are the Olympics its one little moment in the sun every four years, as I would assume? Of course, we at GS would love to see more televised skating, but it is not nearly as rare as televised biathlon, I would imagine. And totally off the top of my head, I would guess that biathlon is as "old" an event as figure skating??

I am a fellow member of the rabbit-ears crowd, and I do not feel "cheated." That is not to say that I would not have enjoyed more gala coverage.

Before the Closing Ceremony tonight, NBC is showing the hour-long documentary "Nancy and Tonya."

So that slot was not available for the Paralympian story.

Adelina, hmm. It's always gutsy to use props because all of a sudden you have to concentrate on something else and not just on your skating. Having done that with ballet and modern dance many years ago, I know that everybody starts out hating their props. I had to do it with a flowing scarf, a cheese basket and once, the best time, with a chair.

But if you're doing to do props, you should actually do something with them. Adelina mostly skated around while trailing them behind her and sometimes whirling them. Then she put them down and actually started performing. I don't know, it was in interesting thought but it didn't quite get there. I did like some of her choreo and performace once she put them down though and I thought she showed off her artistic potential, which shouldn't be dismissed.

Yulia - I don't know if I've ever seen any skater quite like her. She somehow manages to ignore her music and yet mesmerize at the same time. She had the same tone, many of the same moves and the same facial expression as in her free skate and yet the music couldn't have been more different. Finally, I think I know how to describe it: She feels her skating but not her music! If she can learn to feel her music too and think about tempo and changes in tone and expression, and if she keeps her jumps, she will just be astonishing.

Yuna was a blissful goddess, as always.

Caro again was the highlight for me. It's like she has learned to become the master of the ice this season. We did not see anyone perform like she did these Olympics. Just consider the control of her upper body during her foot sequences. Her feet are jumping and turning and marching while she looks squarely at the audience and performs to them with precise arm movements that actually have something do with the music. It's why she is able to pull off Bolero and Scheherazade in a way that one other lady skater at these game could have.

on to the ice dancers and the men :)

The point was, if they just had to have that puff piece, they could have cut plenty of other puff, Bob Costas, Mary Carillo, or any number of things to fit it in. For that matter, I'd rather have an extra hour of gala or any sport than rehash a 20 year old scandal, but I was never as fascinated by tonya vs nancy as the general public.
