Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Somebody give the kid a microphone already. He's clearly missed his true calling as a rock star. Also, I want his Change t-shirt. The design is lovely.

^ I agree! I loved the quality of the show!!

Yuzu did a 3A without hesitation and he was like a swan on the ice (excuse my cheesiness). I loved how he practically knew all the lyrics to the live Monkey Majik songs and sang it with them! It wasn't only an ice show for him, it seemed like a live karaoke party!

The show also mainly focused on Yuzu and other skaters who influenced him, so it was a plus. I only wish they showed Javier's two skates in the broadcast as well.

Hopefully the show was enough of a success that Yuzuru will be able to continue them in the future. I kind of liked the fact that it felt more intimate and personalized than some of the bigger shows.

Has there been any information about whether the Beppu shows will be aired on tv at all? I know Dreams of Ice will, but I'm greedy and want to see everything!

Plushy has tried quad lutz in competition (Cup of Russia 2001, I think). He fell on it, but it was mighty close. I think he has done quad salchow once in a competition in 2004ish. I dunno if there's a video. He did attempt 4S recently, at the 2012 Russian test skate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp2Gb6KBmLs Very messy landing, but not a fall.

I'm still struggling about the risk-reward scenario I prefer.
Thank you for the correction of Plushy's other quads. I did not pay attention to the quads back then, I think I've been more addicted to his successful skates.
Risk- reward is the smartest way to win has been used for a long time now, same happened with a non-quad World's title win by Jeff Buttle and later on- Vancouver had an Olympic champion with a very smart approach, non-quad and very calculating, also- a very carefull skate. But Vancouver win to me was not glorious. Not that I wanted Plushy to win because he jumped quad, but I don't really like skates with no risk implied. That's why me heart hurt for Yuzu falling on quad Sal but I respect him for his daring attitude. He must have probably known that quad Sal is 50/50 but he was determined to assume the risk- that what makes me love this guy.
I think it's more in the hands of a coach to lead the progress of his students in such a manner that they keep the success rate high and non-traumatic. I think Yuzuru is one of the greatest talents in figure skating and if he will play it smart he might surpass the success of his legendary predecessors. That would be amazing.

I'm not quite sure if Yuzuru really needs to rush a new quad jump into his programs. I wonder if the competition would be that high in the upcoming season. Who would be his main rivals? Perhaps it's just in his nature to prove he's the best from the best? Sort of compensation for his Olympic LP. But with his World title he had already covered that gap. Who has the power to overjump Yuzu?

For sure Javier is still a threat to Yuzuru. Remember in the worlds if only he didn't pop that lutz he probably would have that gold right now. Patrick is still is unless he decides to take a break this season. I don't know about the upcomers but unless jason B. gets that quad then I don't think he is currently a threat. Machida too unless he gets that consistency.

As long as you take the ice, anyone can become a threat to you. :) Even your coach, your federation, the judge panel. And most of all: Yourself.
With skating, your inner demon is the biggest threat. ;)

I don't care that much about who get to the top podium. I only want to see Yuzuru compete with all his mind and energy, just like he did at worlds 2012, his short PW or his recent Change ex program at Together on ice. I want to witness that raw enthusiasm many times. And for the rest, whoever wins any medals, whoever will become world champion, I will not pay much attention if they are not my cup of tea.

Yes. If all we cared about was who was at the top of the podium, then should we forget Mao's Sochi free? I think it is interesting to discuss threats but in the end Yuzuru will most likely finish not-1st many times in the future. Does it matter his placement as long as he skates with emotion and programs that move?

(but on threats - a lot of people think Kovtun will be a threat in the Pyeongchang medal contenders thread. even though I don't like him I thought it would be fit to mention.)

If Koreavengeance will be true then forget Kovtun already because he is Tarasova's student. He is very close to Adelina. The Koreans will not forget that easily.

Does Koreavengeance have a name?;)
Lol. Koreavengeance was the word invented by Sandpiper. I have no credit over it.

If Koreavengeance will be true, I think Korea Feds will prefer Canadians and USA skaters over Russian and Japanese skaters (due to historical disputes between them). They can be less hostile towards other Russian Skaters that are not Tarasova' students, but that couldn't guarantee anything for the Russians.

Just some funny talk, doesn't mean it will be true.

lol, yes. But definitely a contender for some World medals, no? He's got two quads (even if they're ugly) and perhaps he'll improve his overall expression within the next quad.

I love his TOI Change performance. I wish his future competition programs choreo would be same complicated and musically emphasized.

Well, what I meant to say was do you have a name that would be preferred by Korea to win the Olys. If you say it could be a Canadian then Patrick sure should have give it a try.
Anyone thinks Han Yan might try and move higher in figure skating charts?

Han Yan is very talented so yes he can.

But anyways 4 years is a long period so no one can say anything for sure. I tend to avoid all predictions because "it's premature to say anything beforehand".

The thing is, after Sochi, it's so obvious Korea Fed will not be so pleased with Tarasova and her students for a long time. And believe me, they remember it very well. :ohwell: my Korean friends all said so.

I know that. Same happened in Sochi- Russians were really pissed after Vancouver. If only they had a strong male contender...

true but then you have to consider that if yuzu didnt fall and was called UR on his 4t on the sp, he would have won worlds with 10 points or less (and this is assuming that everybody went clean in the fp) above the rest, then the 0.30 something differential wont even exist as the contentious result ;)

i do hope yuzu develops consistency in the coming years. if practicing 4Lo helps develop his consistency when it comes to landing the other quad jumps then let him be:). lets just hope that he takes care of his body because i dont want another 2013 worlds sp performance, that was painful to watch :(
