Mao's 3A's aren't a compensation for anything, especially when they were failing her. To her, no program is complete with out the triple axel. Someone mentioned this in another thread, but for skaters such as Mao and Hanyu its not just about out skating the competition, but also about conquering yourself (Hanyu even has that printed on his training outfit). They'll never stop pushing the limit because they are always striving to beat themselves rather than just others. If they fail, they stand up and keep trying. They are never at a standstill. Its one of the reasons I admire skaters like Mao and Carolina.
^ And arguably some score inflation....

I'll probably open up a hornet's nest with this comment, but I think it is ridiculous that Mao is not even in the top 10 in GOE considering the great performances she gave in the Sochi LP and Worlds LP.
among many others: Grand Prix Final 2007 or Four Continents 2008. It seems like grace of movement in and out of the jump and beautiful symmetry of spiral are not given the credit they should get. In my view, Mao is an example of deflation.
I think this paragraph explains everything itselfIt seems like grace of movement in and out of the jump and beautiful symmetry of spiral, are not given the credit they should get and what about her beautiful flexible spins, spirals, step sequences and elegant lines and extensions? In my view, Mao is an example of deflation or maybe she is just a magnificent misfit for the COP system. I knew deep down she had a beautiful, rebel spirit. Honestly, I just watch skaters I like and the judges do what they want anyway. But, it all seems like power, speed and height of jumps are king in GOE scoring to the exclusion of the qualities I mentioned above.
and you're sadly 100% right...or maybe she is just a magnificent misfit for the COP system.

I agree. I never understood why Mao doesn't get the jump GOE like some of the other top competitors. I understand she pretty often has an "e" on the lutz or "<" for some of the jumps, and on those elements she won't get +GOE, but even on elements she does perfectly clean she doesn't get high GOE.
There are quite a few competition Yuna didn't attend but Mao did. Anyone care to check the protocol to see if Mao got high GOE in those competitions?Cause skaters get GOEs comparing to others who compete in the same events. They are not absolute assessments. If there were no Kim in competitions, Mao or Kostner might get the highest GOE on their jumps.

I'll go through and compare the same events they were in vs one Mao was 'alone'![]()
Do we really need another Yuna vs Mao debate?
No. Just want to find out how judges score GOE. Is it true that they score the GOE by comparing skaters in the same competitions, or they score GOE base on reputation only. For example, in one competition which Mao did well but they still gave her the same GOE as the one she did badly, then it's so obvious they score base on reputation alone.Do we really need another Yuna vs Mao debate?

Well FYI, I love both Mao & Yuna. It's possible to compare two skaters (and in this case, we were talking about the effects of GOE when being in competition with one's main 'rival') without things getting nasty. Someone also chimed in earlier that this thread would quickly turn into a Yuna vs. Adelina thread, but we've managed to keep it civil. Try to look at these posts objectively, instead of seeing everything as a recipe for fighting![]()
Because this comment:I like both skaters; but my point is, why single out the two skaters? Why not do a comparison with others as well?
Frankly I think Mao is judged badly on the GOE based on reputation, not because they compared her jumps to Yuna.Cause skaters get GOEs comparing to others who compete in the same events. They are not absolute assessments. If there were no Kim in competitions, Mao or Kostner might get the highest GOE on their jumps.
