I read people saying that the long program at 98 worlds was close. Michelle did not deliver and she fell on a simple 2axel. Irina with 2 3/3s did not win the free skate.

Who do you think should've won the free skate.

Irina

Michelle deserved the gold in 1998 without a doubt. She may have had mistakes, but compared to the others she was far and away the absolute best. Irina was still unfinished at this point and had a flawed skate as well. She basicly only completed four clean triples, she fell on a flip and 1) Fell out of the loop on the 3s/3l and 2) Had multiple turns on the 2nd toe for the 3t/3t. Maria, though stiff kneed, was relatively clean. She had one fluke fall during some footwork but otherwise landed five clean triples and a sixth slightly two-footed triple. I would have judged the event like this:

Michelle Kwan 5.7/5.9
Maria Butirskaya 5.6/5.7
Irina Slutskaya 5.7/5.6

Re: Irina

Actually I believe Irina landed 6 triples including the 3sal/3loop and 3toe/3toe accordding to reports I read. I'm not talking about the overall win. I know Michelle deserved to win but i'm talking about the FS.

Edited to add: I believe the only element Irina fell on was the 3flip.

The Free Skate

Excidra,

I've just re-watched the free skate twice and have found the same facts to be true. Irina did not complete six clean triple jumps. But, I will say that I just purchased this event and had never seen it until about two weeks ago. I too read reports and was eager to see Irina land two 3/3s. Imagine my surprise when neither 3/3 was clean! She had four clean triples, one fall and the two questionable triples came at the ends of both 3/3 combinations. She tried a 3s/3l but couldn't hold onto the landing of the loop and had a bad fall out. She also attempted a 3t/3t but yet again the landing of the 2nd triple wasn't clean and she had multiple turns, which I would not count as a clean triple. Other than that, her other jumps were superb and the spins, as always, were difficult and fast. Aside from that, she certainly wasn't anywhere near the level she'd reach for 2000-2002.

I thought it was interesting to note just how close it was between Slutskaya and Butirskaya. From all the things I had read previously, it seemed Maria didn't skate well and won the bronze by default. I was surprised to see her actually skate fairly well and narrowly lose the silver by a 5/4 vote.

I really think that the medals that both Butyrskaya and Slutskaya received were gifts...

I can't believe that they were in 4th and 5th place after the short programs.

Elena Liashenko skated her typical style in the SP, which was clean, Tonia Kwiatkowski had a step out on the Lutz, but it the program was really great, with the 3flip as her single jump. Butyrskaya and Slutskaya had major errors in the SP.

Not to mention that Tatiana Malinina was also clean in the SP.

But anyway, Michelle won fair and square...

Remember the LP is about what you do, not what you don't do.

If memory serves me correclty the all landed 6 triples. Just so happens Maria made that silly mistake. *SMH

This is how i had it marked in my...folder (where i keep my personal comments)

Michelle Kwan 5.7/5.9
Maria Butyrskaya 5.6/5.8
Irina Slutskaya 5.8/5.7

Irina had those 2 triple triples, but the quality of both were rather "ugly"...she fell on her 3Flip, a jump she seemed to repeadidly fall on, and her 3Lutz/2Toe combination I will never know how she pulled it out. Program was entertaining, but not a program u could have possibly challenged Michelle with.</span>
