Interesting! I could so see Meryl in an Indian bollywood outfit. Charlie, with that mop of blond hair, not so much...

Yay for Meryl and Charlie!!! Perfect choices. I can't wait to see these Bollywood programs. I love how Slumdog made Indian dance so cool in the U.S. Phantom is one of the best scores ever for ice dance, and they are up to the challenge.

Virtue and Moir's choices sound good, but I am a little disappointed they went back to the pretty, gentle romantic look for the FD. I loved Pink Floyd and really would have liked to see it skated clean.

Just because it is a classical piece doesn't mean it will be pretty or romantic. It states that is something unique and it seems to me that it will be something that people are not expecting from them. I think they're Flamenco will be fabulous!

"Davis and White, as an example, listened to hundreds of songs this past spring before choosing "Phantom of the Opera" for their free dance. For their original dance, the team has been consulting with an Indian folk dancer in Ann Arbor to make their program "as authentic as possible," Davis said.

Virtue and Moir are about to begin work with a Spanish dance instructor for their Flamenco original dance. Their coaches, though, aren't ready to reveal the team's music choice for their free dance."

I wonder why Zoueva/Shpilband were fine with revealing Davis/White's music but not V/M?

I doubt it was Marina and Igor who made the decision not to reveal V/M's music choice. If they wanted to keep their skater's music choices a secret, then they wouldn't have said anything. I think V/M want to keep us waiting!

However the article specifically states that is it the coaches who do not want to reveal the music. Maybe I am overreacting, but I just can't help but feel that D/W are getting saddled with the leftovers of Chock/Zuerlein's program from last year while V/M are getting special treatment with more interesting music and choreography. Hope I'm wrong.

Most likely the coaches do not want to reveal the music due to the wishes of their skaters. Maybe it is something really different and V/M want it to be a surprise. POTO isn't that original so maybe Davis and White didn't have a problem revealing it or maybe they don't see a point in keeping things secret. I'm sure D/W would know or feel if they were being treated second fiddle and would switch coaches. BTW, D/W have much more interesting and original OD music.

That's what I was trying to get at! I don't think the fact that Marina and Igor shared D/W's music choice has anything to do with favouritism. I think they are just following their skater's wishes.

yeah they hired a specific folk dancer but i hope D/W dont...mess up....it will either be "cool" or an awkward dance.

classical and unique.........hmmmmmm..........yeah you're cool marina

The same article said Faiella and Scali are doing Italian country folk dance and Weaver and Poje, like V&M, are doing Flamenco

OD: Indian Folk Dance (Yay for Bollywood!!)

???? Indian folk dance is not necessarily the same as "Bollywood" dancing. First off, there is no real dance style called "Bollywood." "Bollywood" is used to refer to dances seen in Indian cinema. Indian cinema tends to have a lot of musicals, and these musicals can have all sorts of music -- from straight up pop music, to perhaps folk or classical dance, if the plot calls for it. "Indian folk dance" usually refers to dances done by the common people -- just like any other folk dance.

Read this on FSU...: Dube/Davison are not skating to Carmen! Either they have been reading online forums, or they finally realized it wasn't working.

SP- Requiem for a Dream
LP- The Way we Were (movie score).

As for the most recent announcements from the ice dancers, why would D/W go through so many options just to go with a boring choice used by their training mates just last year? I don't get it, and I don't think they'll be able to do anything interesting with it. Also, I don't think Flamenco is a good choice for V/M.

I am very glad they have ditched Carmen. After reading the article, I am left wondering if anything can go right for this team. Hopefully, they can cap off their career with a medal at the Olympics. I see them being the darkhorse.

That's what I can't understand! They go through "hundreds of pieces of music" to end up with something that their junior training mates won JW with? I don't know how they can but they need to find some way to make it drastically different. I was really disappointed when I read that, I had hoped for something more original. But at least their OD sounds like it could be pretty cool, I'm glad they didn't go with Russian again because IMO it just didn't suit them.

I think Flamenco could work as long as it doesn't get the same treatment B/A's Flamenco FD got in 2006- i.e. too many music changes. Though I don't think there can be too much of that in an OD...we'll see. I am excited to find out what their FD is.

On D&W's choice of Phantom, I can see that the music suits their style, but the question remains why they would pick it. Here's why: the majority of the crowd at Olympics will never, never in their lives have seen a Junior Worlds/Nationals program. It is only obsessed skatefans and judges who will have seen C&Z's Phantom. The North American crowds always get into the Phantom music: it's familiar and pleasant, most of it. And the lyrics are only allowed in dance, so even its popularity in singles will not keep a dance program from having a 'different' feel from other Phantoms. Olympics is in Vancouver. So it'll be great for the every-four-years set. As to the casual seniors only skatefan, the last time a top 6 at worlds dance team did Phantom, I think it was Drobiazko/Vanagas? In any case, not in the last 4 years, so while Phantom is very popular, it has not been overused in dance seniors lately. I quite understand why they announced Phantom early: It is a preemptive stake of ownership on the music. They were on the other side of this problem when they first became seniors.

I'm not crazy about the choice, but I see the logic.

DomShabs were secretive about Polovetsian dances, a warhorse of ice dance. D&W picked the old warhorse Polovetsian dances, too, not knowing of DomShabs choice. Suddenly there were 2 top ten dance teams with the same music. OH NO. I think DomShabs might have placed higher that year if D&W weren't skating to the same thing, and prompting unflattering comparisons, like is this really 5 places better than D&W? So D&W have now claimed Phantom. I doubt any other dance team will pick it in the top ten or 12.

V&M, the case is reversed. They have what they feel is an unusual idea and they want to keep it secret to maintain the surprise and delight of the uniqueness. This doesn't always work, and backfired for V&M and DelSchoes on Great Gig in the Sky--but not big time, since they were never at the same competition last year.

I think D/W are more suited to POTO than Patrick Chan is, honestly. Don't know about the Indian folk dance.

As for Dube/Davison, I think they made the right choice with their long program. Not sure about the short, though. The music always strikes me as notoriously difficult.

I really appreciate your insight into D/W's decision. According to IceNetwork, Weaver/Poje will be skating to Phantom in the FD as well. I'm interested to know how you think that could affect D/W?

so Tinymavy, you have no problem with Meryl and Charlie doing Phantom of the Opera, (right after doing Samson and Delilah last yr) , but you have a problem with V&M going the classical route?

it's interesting to read posts from non-V&M fans who criticize them for using too similar music choices from past seasons, yet they have no problem when their favorite skaters choose overused selections that don't challenge themselves. Doing Samson & Delilah in the 08-09 season, then Phantom the year is not any different.

Very little they are not a top 10 team. I doubt W&P will be at Olympics. Meryl & Charlie are at NHK & CoR. W&P will be at CoC and at SC. I sincerely doubt that W&P will make the Grand Prix finals. They might or might not be at 4CC's, depending on how they do at Canadian Nationals. And they might or might not be at Worlds, depending on whether V&M choose to do Worlds. My guess is that Crone/Poirier will be at Worlds and not W&P. The D&W and W&P are not on the same level.

And W&P are doing a Flamenco OD as are V&M. I'm afraid that W&P are going to look like pale copies of V&M in the OD and D&W in the FD at 4CC's.
