2009/2010 Programs

I like Maos music choice. I am nowhere near tired of Masquerade. And it will do much better for her in SP (it worked for Oda at least). I need to find that Rachmaninov piece, not sure wich one it is or if I recognize it. But it's Rachmaninov, can't fail :p

Kevins music choice is making me go  It'll be interesting to see how that's going to work out....

Lots of music announcements these days. More are very welcomed. :)

Any news from Russia?

I want to know about K/S and D/S.

I recently noticed that before becoming the Russian couple No.1 D/S had really interesting and lovely music (I love their FD from the Olympic Season 2006), but since they became the Russians No.1 it has been more or less the same kind of music: impressive, dramatic Russian stuff, which I normally love - but twice Khachaturian, once Borodin as FDs, plus the Shostakovich as the OD this season? Reads like the who is who of Russian dramatic music (or Eastern European, since Khachaturian was Armenian, but lived in Russia all his life, I think). My guess is Rimsky-Korsakov for next season, the Happy Easter thingie he wrote or Cappricio Espanol, but we could also get Tschaikovsky or Rachmaninov.

Can't Kim choose it anyway? It's not like Wagner has the goods to compete directly with Kim.

Right. Just because it was chosen by Ashley does not mean Kim has not already chosen it or will. It is not exactly going to create drama.

please Sasha, announce your pics!

WHO picked these? I love Pirates....but not for her.
Carmen. no way. Mirai is not carmen. I was hoping she would pick something slightly more mature than the cutesy stuff she has been doing.
I don't think either of her programs last year was "cutesy", neither was Copella or the program she won Jr Nationals with. Her Chaplain SP was very entertaining and in character, but not exactly in a childish way. Her LP was pretty challenging musically, and only the SLSS had some "young" choreography. But I wouldn't call it cutesy the same way I'd call Asada's Carmen cutesy.

I have to say that I'm happy with the choices of the American skaters so far. Now I hope Zhang can choose something good too.

Once Upon a Time in America and Polovtsian Dances, while not exactly warhorses, have both been used many, many times. I don't think there's anything particularly fresh or inspired about these choices.

And I disagree with a previous post that said Mirai's 'Chaplin' program wasn't cutesy. It certainly was.

Joe, I can't tell whether you're being witty or are basing this on real info. If the latter, could you please share your source?

I think Joe got Sasha mixed up with Caroline, who might be skating to Tchaikovsky for her new LP.

Joe, check ya batteries. ;)

Witty, of course. I like Sasha and wish her the best on return, but using those sweet musical pieces for the LP when I know she can pour it on in the SP is kind of a let down for me. Maybe it is disappointment.

please no. I am sick of Sing, Sing, Sing. She is too slow to pull it off very well. and i really wish she would get out of the 40's-50's music. Gershwin, moon river, now big band.

Funny, I think she never used 40s or 50s music for her SP. It Ain't Necessarily So is from Porgy&Bess if I remember correctly which was done in the 1930's. Before that she used Brahms who lived in the 19th century. Then she used Moon River which was composed during the 1960's and Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninov which was composed 1900.
Sing, Sing, Sing isn't 40's or 50's either....

I would call Mirai's Copella cutsey, she had those doll like moves in her program. Same with her swing kids and i got rhythm short programs.

From today's GS article:

Denis Ten
SP - a rarely used arrangement of Sing, Sing, Sing
LP - Paso Doble
Choreo: TaT.

Yes, but big band music is hardly limited to the 40s and 50s either, it had been popular since the 1920's
Yes, but American music at that time was considered barbaric by Europeans. Some people still will not recognize it in the same manner that they entertain the classic age.
