2014 Worlds Men Short Program

So PCS DOES depends on skating better than before. Of course that's unless your name sounds Russian.

But PChan in TEB was much better than he was in Sochi. Yet his PCS in Sochi is higher  This is why I am saying I don't get PCS and GEO these days. Just more and more confused.:slink: I hope Machida deliver well and does not need any boost. Half of the gold is in his hand, the other half is in Javi's.

It is a stretch if you look at the score breakdown. In Sochi he only doubled one jump.

I thought he was quite tentative in Sochi aside from the jump.

I don't get it, why are we disputing scoring over a CLEAN, well-performed program?

From what I've read in Japanese press, Machida transferred his training base to Japan after last season's Worlds; engaged Yoshinori Onishi (the man sitting at Machida's left side in K&C), who re-worked his quads, introduced Machida to pilates-like training, school figures, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a stampede of young skaters in Japan rushing to join Mr Onishi's class given Machida's transformation within less than 12 months. It is not as if other elite skaters weren't training hard, weren't using latest results from sports science, engaging help from dancers etc. Only Machida seems to have achieved this rapid ascent, which is truly amazing.

Thank you. So Yoshinori Onishi is the one wearing brown suit? Do you know who he is the one wearing black suit?
According to British commentator, Machida's SP should have broken the World record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaYfPjBgj5c

To prove that home inflation is a must for all the skaters that get high score in home rink? Like Hanyu's PCS suddenly skyrocketed from 85 to 92 in GPF?
At this rate no skater should broke the world record at home.

Machida's was the skate of the day for me  Yusuru great under pressure. Enjoyed Javier as well.

Oh yeeeees, great to see Tomas being so happy :yay: Also nice to see Jeremy with a big smile despite his mistake. It will be hard for him and Max to win 3 spots though. The competition is big. My prior wishes for Friday are Tomas and Jeremy bowing out with their skates of their lives :)

In the lower ranks Caluza(PHI) and Kim(South Korea) were surprisingly good. Also impressed with Chafik, France. Sad for Majorov, don't understand what happened to him?

in the comments they say that's the Southern Vietnamese pronunciation. It is difficult, but I'd take the effort of pronouncing something like Wen (approximately) over the NGoo-yen, that's nowhere near the correct pronunciation.
A case can be made for lots of names in lots of languages, and I think it would be nice for commentators to make the effort and learn the approximate pronunciation of 30-40 athletes' names, so the audience may learn them as well.

Agree. When they meet them they can ask how the skaters want their names pronounced. Cool video :) Thanks!

Because I just think it's hypocritical of some people, not you, to look for a reasonable explanation for score inflations for some skaters, but when it happens to others they need to look for bribery signs. That's all.

great score form Yuzu nevertheless
a bit underscored

And under-rotated fall and you think he deserves a 91?

Hah, and when Chan falls and gets 91 you and the rest of the Chan bashers whine till the cows come home. :rolleye:

Highest PCS despite a fall. The new Chan ... Yuzuru Chanyu if you will.

This HAS to stop. It wasn't cute when it happened to Chan and it isn't cute when it happened with Hanyu. I agree Hanyu sold the rest of the performance, but Machida thoroughly outskated him and if not for Japanese inflation, Hanyu would have had a sub-90 skate and PCS of about 43 points.

A skate with a fall, from ANY skater, Chan - Takahashi - Hanyu - Plushenko - whoever, has NO business getting 90% (45/50) PCS and a score above 90.

I'm sad that home inflation doesn't happen for Kozuka.

The talk about hom inflation here is Japan is just a joke/more like a fear because of what happened in Sochi. I hope it won't happen here in Saitama because the podium with 3 Japanese men is too much. Like I would be crossed if Hanyu with the usual fall on his 4S still get 193 like what happened in GPF. (I was like, what? 188 or 190 is more than enough for him to win, why such high score...)
Nevertheless, looking at the score today I think there is no unreasonable score yet. Someone get a little high scores, someone get a little low scores but it's subjective and subtle so I think it's fine. Kozuka might be a little bit undermarked but maybe it's because the judges don't like his style?

Is it just me or Worlds without PChan has become much of a better competition, even the scores look better and deserving?

Well, you have a skater falling and still getting the highest PCS, and 90+ scores... so I'd say it pretty much IS like a competition with PChan. As for deserving, there's no way that Hanyu deserves to be ahead of Verner.

I was saying that before looking at the score details of the last group. But seriously, Hanyu got all the rotation yet got a call on UR, with PChan I don't think that would happen. More likely no UR at all.

Javi for sure. Machida second. Third for Hanyu is right, he didnt skate that well today, and I was glad to see him not held up since he was at home (so they reverted to holding up Machida instead).

How was he not held up? His PCS was 45.50 points with a UR fall.

(To my recollection) even Chan/Takahashi have never gotten PCS like that in his SP when he's had a fall.

Well, it is extremely rare for Hanyu and Chan to UR their jumps. Both have excellent technique and height. Skaters like Takahashi and Reynolds are always question marks.

To me, if you're getting called for a UR on home ice, the technical specialist probably is getting it right. I'm very glad he was called for an UR, because with a fall on a ratified rotated quad he would have gotten a score of 94.34 (maybe even 95 with slightly higher P/E PCS) which would have simply been outrageous given that he FELL.

I hope Hanyu puts together a clean skate tomorrow. I wonder how many Chan bashers who have constantly hated on him for wins with 2+ falls will cry out if Hanyu wins with 2 falls (to be expected with the 4S) or more. And on home ice at that... it'll be 2013 Worlds all over again.

Hanyu handled the pressure well, and really sold the performance, but he shouldn't be in 3rd considering the clean skates from many of the others. With a fully rotated 4T, I would be okay with that, but he should be slightly behind Verner in my books. Verner if he were Japanese would easily clear 90 at this Worlds. :rolleye:
