2015-16 Grand Prix assignments

I hope it's not too serious for him and he's back on the ice soon!

*crosses fingers* BrendanBrendanBrendanBrendan

I will really miss seeing Peter competing. Such a shame.

I am also hopeful that Brendan will get a spot. If Ivan Righini, who did not even qualify for the free skate at 2015 worlds can get 2 spots, Brendan should get 2 as well.

For a skater who has placed in the top 10, but hails from a country from which obtaining a VISA is challenging, I'm disappointed (but not entirely surprised unfortunately) that the ISU does not do more to facilitate assignments for Misha which would permit him the best possible opportunity to compete. Just saying, his hard work and talent warrant a level enough playing field. Not one obstructed by bureaucracy.

I haven't seen it posted yet that Sei KAWAHARA will replace Liebers at Skate Canada.

Hurtado/Diaz's ice dance replacements have been announced. To my VERY great disappointment, instead of giving the Rostelcom slot to Coombes/Buckland, it's gone to Viktoria KAVALIOVA / Yurii BIELIAIEV. The TEB slot has gone to Laurence FOURNIER BEAUDRY /Nikolaj SORENSEN.

The TEB spot is great news, but I'm really disappointed Coombes and Buckland didn't get Rostelecom. Who makes that decision--Russian Fed?

Yes. They have 5 pairs they can choose from and clearly did not want to pick those at the top of the list- C/B or Tobias/Tkachenko.

It's a cowardly decision. Not any more cowardly than the picks Skate Canada made for their open slots. Or France for the ladies. (And goodness knows the field for CoR is already tougher than any GP I've seen in years); but Coomes & Buckland deserve that slot. They just bested the number five team in the World. Seriously, this is enough to make me hope they blow things up at Europeans. If CoR wanted to play it safe, they could have gone with Tobias & Tkachenko or Testa & Csolley, but this choice, from a totally neutral dance-fan perspective, is appalling.

I agree totally. It is completely obvious they don't want anyone to sneak in and beat I/Z or S/K and that is the sole motivation for this decision. I do understand why they did it, and that they are allowed to do it, but it is cowardly as you say, and I truly am deeply disappointed. I truly hoped C/Buckland would get the spot but if not them then it could at least have been one of the other two you mention. Very sad for fans of the discipline.

It is why I think places at GPs should be assigned by the ISU by world ranking or last season standing or something similar. It is ridiculous that all the Feds can manipulate the competitions to their own skaters' advantage. If each GP got those ranked 1-6 respectively and so on, with the GP that got the 1 ranked getting 7 etc (and this was alternated each year so different GPs got the the top ones), surely it would be much fairer as skaters would know if could expect to get a GP or two and the GPs would be fairly balanced with talent.

Ice dance should have 10 spots per event. So many good couples had just one assignment at the begining of the season and some of them still do!
Tbh, right now I'd rather watch 10 ice dance teams than 12 ladies. :slink:

I still like having some host picked spots. For example while everyone complains about fairness, it could be that russian figure skating fans, that will be ones attending the event, prefer to watch a russian team, even if its weaker than some foreign team. So yeah, while one may think it is not fair for a team, it could be fair to fans that pay for the tickets.

Not blaming russians, at SA the crowd was obviously more interested in american skaters.

Yes this is actually what I favor changing most at the moment... dance quite simply needs more spots.

And I can understand that to some extent. So, have it like Grand Slams in tennis and have a few 'wild cards,' meaning that you might have say 10 spots by ranking and 2 of fed choice (and equivalent in disciplines with fewer places or indeed increase the places as some have said) at each GP. Then the wild cards can be picked from a list maybe and Feds can fight amongst themselves who gets who for the last spots, but at least most is set and skaters know how many GPs to expect, not dependent on the whims of the organisers.

T&T's total score at Mordavian Ornament was 160.98. And their SD is gorgeous. They are not safe to invite, if the Russian fed is worried about the placings of either M&K and whomever is invited to be the third Russian team there. S&K do not show on the entries yet.
