Marin's free leg comes up a higher than is ideal but it's not a "mule kick." I don't find it distracting...honestly I didn't really notice it until you pointed it out. I find Marin's skating overall to be so strong that I must have overlooked it. Alina is very impressive technically but, in direct comparison, I find Marin to be a much more complete skater. In addition to strong jumps and spins she has elegance, grace and the artistry. Alina has a kick@$$ jump arsenal and that's about it, which is fine. She's young. I'm hoping other parts of her skating will develop in time but for now, she's killer jumping bean. I do agree with @yuki that she has a tendency to pitch forward or lean on her landings and lose speed, especially in her FS. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that she's jumping "on tired legs" but that is more of a distraction to me than Marin's free leg. Hopefully that's something Alina can improve as she grows.
I do agree that Anastasiia Gubanova is a dream:luv17:. Like Marin, Anastasiia has that elegance, grace and artistry that Alina lacks. She's more of a complete skater and not just a jumper. I am worried about her jumps though. She has the content but her technique is really swingy in her upper body and she muscles some of her jumps. I'm scared that as she gets bigger it could cause her some issues. But for now I adore her...balletic and graceful...love her!
Again, I agree Tsurskaya needed to be included in the mix for junior worlds. IMO she is the best jumper in the field, junior or senior. Her jumps are so big and effortless looking...amazing! Also she made improvements this season with her presentation and artistry. Last season she was really rough around the edges, there was no finesse to her movements, just jump-skate-jump-skate. This season she's taking time with her movements, giving more attention to the choreography and music, and she looks more polished. I liked watching her jump last year; I like watching her skate this year. She's another favorite of mine. She's just so accident prone. Polina missed out on junior worlds last year (which she was a favorite to win) and the JGPF this year (which she was also co-favorite for gold) due to injury or illness. I hope she can stay healthy between now and junior worlds.
I was shocked to see her hit the 3A in her JGP event earlier this season but this combo is unreal. She's is one helluva jumper, that's for sure! :agree:

Rika is very promising, indeed. But is she going to compete? I thought she missed the team.
We shall see how it is going to unfold. Alina was very consistent this season: 4 clean competitions out of 5. And it looks like junior worlds are hers to lose. But unlike Zhenya who had some falls every now and then but who had never major issues Alina had one disastrous meltdown this season. I hope she can keep her cool, though.
Marin is a wild card despite her status. If she gives her best she can try to compete for gold even with clean Zagitova as her pcs will be higher. The question is if she can. Just one fall or one pop may mean a lot.

As we know now, it didn't work and didn't matter (she would get in anyway), but the reaction of this super nice positive guy indicates how much of a threat is Marin Honda to Russian dominance in ladies skating.

His reaction seemed more disappointed with the fact that Alina tanked after being 1st and dropped down to 3rd. Plus it was really close between Alina and Marin for 2nd place (about a point or so) but Alina missed it and had to settle so I'm sure he was a little upset about that too.

To put things into perspective, Alina was 9th or 10th at Russian Junior Nationals January 2016, was not hyped as Liza 2.0 and Anastaasia, and I didn't know her at all till her JGP debut. So to become the JGPF champion in less than a year is very remarkable. What I am looking at is the rate she is improving.
Marin is my fav Japanese lady at this moment. Her skating is smoother, though I found that is typical of Japanese ladies (e.g., Yuna Shiraiwa). I think Yuna can be a even better skater than Marin, but she has to fight against her body change.

Nobu met Satoko at the practice rink recently. He said she was in good condition and she was smiling. She told him "I'm okay". Nobu says the hip injury is the result of overtraining to correct her toe technique as well as avoiding underrotations.

Marin came out of nowhere in 2015/16 and Alina in 2016/17 and they took the world by storm.
Now it's time to decide, who's gonna be that pre-Olympic junior queen, that every senior is gonna be scared of in Pyeongchang.

Not really. Marin was hyped long before she even debuted on junior circuits mostly due to her famous younger sister (child actress) in Japan and dubbed as a next heiress to Mao, so she appeared to perform at many ice shows. I usually dislike such hypes but she charmed me with her great SS and musicality. Zagitova is indeed out of nowhere on the other hand.

Marin had a FS this season that was right after a SP error that had me saying "This is why I watch figure skating". I hope to see more performances like that from her.

Love thy Mao She has proved that she needs nothing of the sort.
This is the first post in this topic about Mai Mihara in 2017. I suspect that she'll not be overlooked any longer.
Mai needs 2 good programs for next year. And some push. Her PCS are still too low. But she's JL #2 in waiting. Marin will be #1 next year. Mai is trying to take over Satoko as #2.

This season she needs nothing new, I agree. Next season is a different thing. The good thing about Mai is that she has so much room to grow. The very juniorish style of this season can work to her advantage if she transforms herself. Judges love to see an evolution take place in front of their eyes. I'm not saying she should completely change her style and become sultry or sexy, but Mao for example did SP's like I got rhythm and Bei mir bist du schön when she was long out of juniors and made them work. Maybe it's too much to ask to compare these two, though.
Oh gosh I just watched Bei mir bist du schön of COC 2015. How I miss Mao when she's on. And then you look at the score and compare that to Med and it just feels so wrong! Urgh.

Now that 4CC is over, we'll soon be talking about Worlds. While there is some anxiety over whether Satoko, Mai and Wakaba will be able to keep 3 spots for the Olympics, I actually expect all three of them to place within the top 10. Their season bests (218, 200 and 194) are actually their personal bests so those scores will be their starting point if they skate clean or close to clean. If Satoko returns healed she has a good chance to get silver or bronze. Mai has proven her reliability time and time again and Wakaba can do much better than 4CC.
I think Marin will become an "official" #1, when she defends her Junior Worlds title in three weeks.
