I am confused. Marin is great et al but official no. 1. I think it will take a bit more than a junior world title to be no. 1 in Japan. It's not like the senior ladies there already including Satoko are chopped sushi.

^This. People are counting chickens before they hatch. Perhaps we should let Marin compete successfully on the senior level before she's proclaimed as the #1 Japanese lady?
Maybe it's the ponytail, the Rondo Capriccioso, and the refreshingly clean performances, but so much of Mai's skating reminds me of Michelle Kwan circa 1995 Worlds.

Marin came out of nowhere in 2015/16 and Alina in 2016/17 and they took the world by storm.
Now it's time to decide, who's gonna be that pre-Olympic junior queen, that every senior is gonna be scared of in Pyeongchang.
Is Polina in the mix too?

Seriously leave Marin alone, she's indeed very special skater but she's really not in point of her career to be called Japan's No. 1, she needs to go to seniors first and get good results. I'm big fan of her since this season and I'm so annoyed by some fanatic fans acting like she's the greatest thing in this sport and people who have problems with that saying some dumb, not needed things about her. "Marin is so special, she's such a artist blahblahblah" v "Satoko, Mai, Wakaba, blahblahblah are so much better than Marin, Marin is so overhyped and overrated". You guys both are annoying (not talking about all people in this thread, just coupld of individuals)

She still skate as Junior this season and have not reach to podium in National. She even not become National Junior Champion this season. She still need to improve her consistency and skill. Please leave some room for her and stop those stupid discussion.
Also, congrats to Mai to become Four Continents champion by two flawless performance. I hope Satoko can stay health and Wakaba can redeem herself in Worlds. Go, Team Japan.

Looking forward to Worlds, what are the chances of Japanese ladies holding onto 3 spots? Satoko's programs this year are so beautiful, but those jumps are still a coin toss in terms of judges calling UR or not. It seems that her PCS is better this year, which hopefully will keep her in the crucial 2-5th place range. My worlds prediction for Japanese ladies is Miyahara 3rd, Mihara around 8th, and Higuchi around 10th depending on whether her foot is healed or not. Mai should be skating with more confidence thanks to her win, and I think that Satoko and Wakaba will come back with a fighting spirit after their injuries to prove themselves. Go Team Japan!

Mai's win at 4cc shows how important consistency is. If she can keep it up, she may well pass Satoko in a few years. Mai should get more GOE for her jumps. Her spins positions need some improvement since she is not as flexible as the top ladies.

I'm also feeling quite sanguine that in Helsinki, the Japanese ladies will be able to hold on to three spots for the Olympics, which appeared somewhat iffy not so long ago. Satoko is the anchor of this young team so I hope she has fully healed from her hip injury. I have never seen her jump better than at the last GPF FS; and moreover, as noted by Johnny Weir and Yuzuru, she showed there tremendous presence and projection to fill the rink and reach out to the audience and bring them to their feet. Knowing her deep sense of responsibility, she will definitely strive to do her best for Japan. Re Wakaba, assuming she is fully fit, I feel she's due a skate sans pops or falls. I also like how she is developing artistically; she's definitely not just jumps, amazing as they are. As for Mai, her 4CC win should give her the confidence to keep it together and perform well at Worlds. She can create moments on the ice: When she does her spiral in her "Cinderella" FP with arms outstretched, with her great speed and open countenance, I feel a sense of exhilaration and flight (soaring). Wishing them all well at Worlds.

I think the Japanese team even without Mao looks solid. They have Marin in the wings. Mao ready to come back. Mai and Satoko are capable of world medals. They will be fine. Japan and the Russians look good for 3 ladies. i assume the USA shouldn't have a problem either unless all the Russians, Japanese, Carolina and Canadians end up ahead of karen and mariah and ashley doesn't podium then there could be a possibility the US could lose its three spots.
Satoko is super consistent. I think she's in the hunt for silver if not gold. The worst she can place is 5th.
Mai is also consistent. I can't see her falling out of the top 10.
Japanese ladies are at lot stronger than the US ladies. Nothing new since 2006.
Carolina is the one that makes everyone nervous. Even without lutz, she can push everyone down one notch including Satoko. That means total combine is 11 for both Japanese and US.

Stop with that idiotic nonsense hype already please. Marin is only junior internationally so far and yet to be senior medallist in her own country.

Don't matter. People with eyes and brain can see Marin ticks all the boxes for skating. She should be Japan #1. Her PCS is not scored correctly right now when Russian Junior skaters with worse skating skills are getting closer to 70 in PCS and she's getting 62+. Push her now!!!!
Don't forget Kaori! Next year, she may follow in the footsteps of Mai, i.e. improved consistency, improved GOE so big leap in scoring potential. And like Mai -- if PCS has room to improve, that means even bigger room for scores to go up in the next 1.5-2 seasons.

So happy for Mai but I am not sure we can say she is consistent like Miyahara at least yet. Tie will tell.
