2016-17 State of Russian Ladies skating

Try to make an American kid work out like that! First of all, a coach would be accused of child abuse...

No, you'd be fine. I remember having to carry my dance partner Piggy Back style across the floor during my ballet classes when I was in 6th grade. When we got to Junior High, we had to carry our partners on our shoulders up and down the stairs in front of the studio. Coaches have to be creative in finding ways to train their students without using heavy weight's as Ballerina's don't like having bulky muscles. Frankly, the girl's were less afraid than we were. I always worried that I would trip and we'd both fall. The girls would always say that they'd jump off if they thought we were going to fall. That actually happened a couple of times but, we never had anyone get hurt.......Seriously.

Just don't put your hands in the wrong place or you'll get slapped.;)

Too bad for Yulia. I hope a little miracle happens and she can spoil the party at nationals a little bit :slink:

Looking back on the Bratislava FS you can see that her back was clearly bothering her in the end and she sort of limps off the ice and struggles to pick up stuffed bears off of the ice. Heck....she nearly fell out of her final spin and I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to the injury. I think she reagrivated it during the StSeq but to me it's pretty obvious that her back is bothering her.

Is Buianova taking credit for making Masha competive?

"Maria Sotskova made a serious step in the development of her skating, and she is now able to provide strong competition to the leaders of ladies singles figure skating," said coach Elena Buianova, to whose group Sotskova moved this summer.

Maria is definitely one to watch! I can definitely see improvement in her skating from junior season.

My power ranking of Russian senior ladies based on what I have seen so far this season - relative rank in Russia, relative rank in the world, expected score in key competitions:

Medvedeva 1 1 220-225
Pogorilaya 2 2-5 210-215
Tuktamysheva 3 6-10 190-205
Sotskova 4 6-10 190-205
Lipnitskaya 5 11-15 180-190
Sakhanovich 6 15-20 170-180
Leonova 7 15-20 170-180
Radionova ? ? 160-210

I think Stasya Konstantinova is stronger than Sakhanovich, Leonova (and Sotnikova) at the moment. She is eligible for senior competitions.

Excuse me a brief reminder here, I don't have time to create big post in proper place:

Stasya reminds me of Anna P. And, I think, if she manages to overcome her inconsistency in critical competitions she can have a good career. But this "if" so far is quite big. Silver was almost hers to grab in Germany and with a clean skate she could have had 187+ to get into JGPF and drastically push her career up. But now I don't know. In my power ranking I just showed the skaters with senior GPF assignments - Konstantinova has none.

Also, alas, now that Yulia WD from SA her power status this season is unclear. Waiting for Elena. The girl has a character. I hope she is not injured and will make the fight between herself, Anna, Maria, and Liza for 2 team spots quite entertaining (for us fans).

Poor baby, she was crushed after the skate. :console:
I adore her, because she is so different than other baby ballerinas. Sharp, emotional, hot-blooded skating, we need skaters like this from Russia!

Somehow Russian ladies started to lose Americans at least based on the number of views of the respected threads. Want to make up a bit.

A fresh interview from Liza. The highlights:

- Medvedeva is clearly number 1 in Russia she is unbeatable.
- She is still working on 3A. It means no 3A in SC - I am changing my predictions.
- Key start is the nationals.

I wonder how a clean Liza (7 triples, no 3A) would match up against a clean Anna or Elena. Certainly Liza would need the 3A and many triples in the bonus to compete with clean Evgenia. It does seem that the judges are willing to give Liza high PCS when she's clean.

Even with the 3A, her PCS were still a few points lower than the top skaters. Without the 3A, she will be getting Gabby Dalemann/Mirai Nagasu PCS. I'd say she's no longer competitive. Kinda like the Zhangs in 2010.

No longer competitive absolutely not, she is an amazing athlete and she used to land 3ltz-3T and 2a-3T like nobody's business in the past.

In my opinion Mishin is playing this too safely, the level of the ladies nowadays is so high that a 3T-3T is no longer enough: for the FS i would suggest a Satoko-like program with 3ltz-2t-2lo to start and two 2a-3t in the 2nd half, waiting the 3A.

Also she has to be concentrated and get those levels on the spins because she doesn't have any advantages in the components mark.

But maybe she needs a clean short and a clean long considering how rough it was the ladies free skate in Skate America, maybe two clean performances without touching anything is good enough to win the bronze in Canada.

When will we finally see some new 3A jumping talent out of those hordes of Russian (pre-)junior girls?
Numbers say, statistically she should be there already. :confused2:

I can easily see Maria Sotskova takes over Liza this year.
I like the jump layout you are suggesting. But even with that it is not enough. She skates with little attack and I don't see the passion she had two years ago. Maybe it is also a motivation problem. She has been the world champion, and with at least Evgenia and Anna, she is unlikely to be Russian #1.
