2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

The best solution for this situation is Konstantinova for WC, and Gubanova for JWC. Sotskova can have some rest after her disastrous adventure at the Olys.

Konstantinova won't get so much hate if she were not selected for JW, meaning Gubanova cannot. But I don't get Gubanova either: everyone was saying she has balletic arms but that for me, was way too overrated. If we agree Oksana Baiul has great balletic arm movement, Gubanova is not even close; her jumps are not better than Konstantinova, and her air position is not exactly pretty either. And she has the same sort of movement no matter what music she skates to. Maybe Russian Fed keeps on promoting Konstantinova because they want to send a message that late boomers have a chance too. Also I agree that her age should not be a factor to disqualify her for junior competition. Wasn't Bradie Tennell already 19 when she was sent to JW last year?

During 2016-2017 JGP, Gubanova was Russia's most promising junior. And then in 2016 JGPF provided a glimpse of the future with her breaking the junior LP record and then Alina smashing it 10 minutes after. They seemed to be destined rivals then. Interesting how their short careers have unfolded so far. Anastasia is still young though and she still has time to salvage her career.

For other feds it's understandable. But Russia has numerous skaters who aren't actually old enough to take part in seniors. It's not "illegal" and I doubt anyone is calling it such, but it's not something I look fondly at. It'd be like someone like Maria Sotskova(only 3 months older than Konstantinova) participating in juniors, except she's never had the achievements of Sotskova to justify her PCS. I just don't think it's very fair to all the other ladies who actually have to fight for and actually try and justify their status. She has never achieved anything that would make her earn it. In fact, last season at WJCs should have been her last chance and that it would have been for just about every other skater in the country.

She's not a "late bloomer", she just isn't very good. She's still at approximately the same level she was in 2015 Tallinn Trophy. In fact, I don't think she's ever skated better than then and that was 2 and a half years ago. Late bloomers actually bloom.

Gubanova needed to fix her jump technique years ago. It's a shame but she just can't compete without beautiful jumps. Having scratchy landings and ugly takeoffs on just about every jump is not acceptable in this day and age. Still would have preferred to see her at junior worlds, of course.

I like Gubanova a lot. I think if she fixes her jump technique soon enough (the longer you wait, the harder it gets) she might be the one with the most potential.

Aside from her being overscored, i want to give her a prop since she finally skate 2 clean FS in both senior and junior nats. If clean in both SP and FS (which is yet happen for her) in JWC she might medal bronze? It is small but possible. Back then its not make any sense to pick her but now she showed that she can skate clean she prove it. Well i'd still prefer Gubanova by far for JWC but lets not hope Konstantinova bomb in JWC

Sorry but she did not skate a clean FS in Junior Nats. Here: https://i.loli.net/2018/03/05/5a9d326c89d67.gif
3F (should be ! but uncalled) landed on two feet, GOE -0.40

Neither was there a clean FS in Senior Nats, although the protocol would suggest otherwise. There are a few missed calls that might not be overlooked in international competitions.
Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I3mlisI5-0
Sidenote: correct calls would mean a >6 point drop in her TES, meaning that she should place behind both Polya and Nastya despite massive PCs.

Grin, just curious is that a male, female, or transexual in your avatar, and who exactly is it. Since I neither recognize that skater, nor can identify properly from the photo (not being mean, just honest) what gender they are. Thanks. That is one majorly butch and probably steroid pumped female skater if it is women though. Maybe she is in the wrong sport, you cant benefit from steroids that much in skating like many other sports.

This is a norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen. Probably a reference to the true dopers, since she's known for using medications

There’s this interesting twitter thread that talks about potential changes in rules next season. For example, ugly tanos get -GOEs and PCS composition having spreadability and balance in it (I guess it’s regarding backloading). But I’m not sure how legitimate that info is.

I guess we’ll find out how true this is soon enough.

Think we'll get to know for sure in 2-3 months time. Honestly I'm sure whatever rule changes there will be our athletes would find a way to maximise their scores.

Thanks, no wonder I dont recognize her (I dont follow cross country skiing at all, but she sure looks like a giant doper and reading that article all but confirms it). I guess that is how she won 15 (!?!? just looking at her bio now, that is insane) Olympic medals, and why I couldnt even tell by the photo if it was even a man or a women.

What exactly is an ugly tano? Is it bent like Tuktamysheva's or straight like Tsurskaya's?

Pretty sure Shcherbakova was better than the instructor on this one. Mind blown from 0:38 to the end.
That's exactly what I thought.
There were stretches in the dance, where she was more fluent and precise than Zheleznyakov.

Maybe sotskovas idk. I guess it depends on what people prefer. That’s why I don’t understand why they could potentially deduct for it.
