2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Sotnikova was not even a one-season wonder. She knew it was half luck, and if she continued, she will not likely to even repeat her Sochi performance. Plus that year Russia was dying for an Olympic hero, and she fit right in.
Medvedeva is not a one hit season wonder like Sotnikova, I'd be more concerned of Zagitova taking a Sotnikova retirement.

Med will be overtaken by the juniors (if she hasn't been already) the same way Sot, Tukt, Radio, and Lip were.

I'm afraid that Masha might be passed over for Stasya Konstantinova for Worlds after the disappointing Olympic performance :sad21: It would be sad if this were the last time we saw Masha in a major ISU championships and she would have to leave the spotlight without any Europeans/Worlds medal, but at least she had her Olympic moment!

maybe in the future, but like I said Medvedeva is not a "one hit wonder", she already has the longest successful career from the russian wave of female skaters. But she can still improve and try quads to compete next quadrennial.

and she has no chance of going for another Olympics in 2022 given teh current junior ladies content and she is inconsistent and peaks too early in a season.

So something I'm kind of concerned about is if Medvedeva loses her title as the #1 lady of Russia, will she actually continue getting a free pass on her flutz? Because if she will not, she really has no hope of overtaking Zagitova, unless she somehow managed to add a quad salchow.

I really doubt Zagitova will continue till next Olympics, winning already the pinnacle of sports is a hard enough motivation.
I'm more concerned with Trusova and her quads and Scherbakova and Kostronaia, didn't they also land quad in practices ???
Trusova has very good axel jump and of course Tsurskaya has a big axel technique, she just needs to her have faster rotation in the air to get another revolution.

I'm curious if Medvedevas quad parctices will finally be realized in actual competitions.
She can also do her loop combos to add BV as backloading will have limits next quad.

Guys, let's celebrate! :dance3: :ghug: Our girls have just made a final emphasis for this 4 years of domination! I know there are still JWC and WC, but it doesn't matter that much anymore. We've got it all! :yahoo:

People have been counting Masha out for a very long time. It’s nothing new. If she wants to continue she’ll do just fine. Her goal was to get thru this season and do some different programs. Something more modern and fun. I’d love to see yet another side of her on the ice. Very awesome girl with a great personality and work ethic.

What, if anything, do the Russian fans have to say about Eteri? I understand Eteri being disappointed on Zhenya’s behalf but Alina celebrated by herself for quite a while which was sad to see. Do the Russian fans see a bias? Do they mind it?

I am not a fan of Eteri’s and have repeatedly said she has a favorite and it’s not Zagitova, but in this she had a tough spot with Medevedeva having skated last and learned right there she had placed second. Eteri could not just get up and run and go celebrate with Zagitova. She needed to deal with Medvedeva’s disappointment in that moment. I did see her go congratulate and hug Zagitova and the heartbreaking moment as Medvedeva congratulated Zagitova while at the same time Zagitova comforted a heartbroken Medvedeva. I think Zagitova’s win will be celebrated. For some reason it is stunning people, though it should not after Europeans. I am happy for Zagitova.

The only girls who have been recorded performing proper and rotated quads in practice are Trusova and Shcherbakova. Kostornaia has only been reported to be training them. Kostornaia should be working on 4S and 3A.

I wonder how the girls are going to be able to motivate themselves for the worlds. Olympics seems like it would be the pinnacle of the sport and the highlight of the season while the worlds would be more of an afterthought. But these girls seem to be motivated by slightly different things...
If Canada and the US were to repeat these placements at Worlds would that mean they’d only grab two spots or am I misremembering how those spots work?

Correct. Both Canada and USA would only have 2 spots next season.

Osmond repeating 3rd and the 2nd CAN lady finishing no lower than 8th should do it for 3 spots I think.

Correct. 2 spots for Canada & the US, while Japan would go back up to 3.
