Ah, that's how it was still? How disappointing... They really should fix the rules and just allow triples and quads in the short.

Eteri's gonna teach the girls to be the first to put +3Lz on the end of combos to fix that problem. Trusova's layout next season will be 4T/4S/3F+3Lz/2A+3Lz/3F+3T+3Lo/3S/2A :laugh:

No need to do that, Trusova gets max points possible with her layout using 2 quads. It's impossible to make any changes to the jumps that would give her more points, apart from adding another quad or 3A. She already repeats Lutz and Flip.

I guess technically this sort of a layout could be possible to try next season:

3F-1Lo-3S

Long ago I watched a documentary on RT about the famous Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg and as I get more and more involved with figure skating as a fan I definitely see some pattern from the ballet school applied in Russian figure skating camps. (and I don't mean including ballet moves and choreo in FS) For example, they showed the audition for application in the school where a big jury of teachers/former ballet dancers etc. are evaluating the body shape of the girls, trying to predict whether they will grow more or less. (I think there was also a doctor) I can imagine that something similar takes places at Eteri's camp, especially now when she is very famous and many parents want to send their children to her, because if we look at her current students - they all are so tiny and mostly have the same body shape. Only exceptions would be Tsurskaya and Panenkova. Figure skating is, however, still a sport, so I think they probably are not that picky and don't necessary look for the slimmest of girls but for the ones who won't grow much in both height and weight. I guess more important is if the specific skater has the right proportions to do the jumps with the technique they are teaching.Another parallel is the annual performance on the stage of Mariinsky Theatre, where also students in their first year participate, which is basically what Pluschenko is doing at the moment with his students, allowing them to take part in his shows.

I do feel pretty bad for Zagitova though. She looked like it was forbidden for her to win or something. I think a skater should be able to feel unreserved happiness for an Olympic victory...

It would be a shame if it would affect the group relationships! Evgenia winning for two years in a row didn't affect the group relationships - why should it be different now that Zagitova dominates? It had to happen and it will happen. They should might as well deals with it now I think. It's the season with the least pressure coming now.

But this isn't a competition of 4-year-olds! This is a competition of 6 to 7-year-olds. She just is skating there 2 years before is usual.

Competitions of 4-year-olds are extremely boring.

But anyway, you don't find it impressive? Just the 1A is something I haven't seen by anyone within 9 months of her age.

yes, having 3rd junior grade at the age of 4 is impressive indeed. but you can't make a prediction that she will be jumping quads, because you never saw a 4 yo girl that jumps that high.
honestly i don't understand why you watching all of this. you can't really predict who will be amazing in seniors even based on the results they show at 10.
do you enjoy their performances?
watching a programs of a 10 yo is extremly boring to me. there is some rare exceptions at 11-12, but not from younger girls, they all are so rough and unpolished
 
I agree that usually 10 yo aren't really as interesting to watch as 13+ yo. But I think it's better to discuss sucess of 10 yo skaters than some stupid tweets of semi-retired skaters. It's like early predictions game. Actually I'm glad that our junior ladies can attract attention here on GS. It can be useful to their future career.

Well, let's see. Of course, 4yo is way too early to predict for anything. It's almost a total waste before seeing double jumps. But this girl showed great development during 2 months(She was not nearly as good at anything when I saw her for the first time in late December) so she's someone I'll keep at the back of my mind. And she's 2 years ahead of the pack already. Chances are, in a few years we might be able to say something more ambitious regarding her.

10yo is actually a pretty good age for projection. The girls will already be jumping triples and you can see some hints of how they will be. Akatieva for example has the fastest rotation speed in the world and trains quads. And is under Eteri. There it's very easy to predict quads for her. This point where they have all triples is really when you can pretty comfortably project them otherwise as well.


For the younger skaters... The truth is, I don't really enjoy watching the vast majority of them at all. I just watch someone skate for a few seconds and if they don't catch my interest, I skip to the next one. It tends to only take 2 or 3 seconds to notice if someone's actually good, and 99.9% of them are not, at least by my standards. In any case, there are some skaters who I follow simply because I enjoy watching them skate and those are who I usually watch for(These also tend to be big talents, coincidentally). Otherwise I just skip from skater to skater until I find someone who I'm going to add to my pool of skaters to follow(Very unlikely this late in the season). Still, that's the reason for watching - To find that next gem.

As for performances by such young skaters that I actually enjoy, Ksenia Melkumova's I enjoy watching the most. She's got tiny jumps which means that there's a real possibility she will never amount to anything in singles, but the skating and footwork just are too beautiful. At least she'll have a bright future as an ice dancer if she can't get her jumps in order.
