Wasn't Bridgestone sponsoring Skate America? That might be why.
As for Karen's illness, I wonder if there is a scenario where she would have a chance if she requested a medical bye. Can a skater request one if they skate (in Karen's case if she skates the FP)?
She did a practice without jumps before the short, so I'm wondering if it's her foot or illness. She's had issues with the FS, so maybe she was able to get through the short, but not the FS.
But I'm bummed out by this.

Yep. Fantastic girl, great performer, oozing with enthusiasm with very impressive content for 12yo, but the height of the jumps is rather modest. One may hope she'll stay petite or develop her vertical leap in the future. :thumbsup:
Anyway, you've got some great junior champion out there!!!
It's not like she's produced good results at either though - in her career which started in the 07-08 season she's had only 1 podium finish.

Congratulations to Bradie for her first place finish and well done to Mirai for 2nd, it was an amazing free and Karen Chen beat Ashley Wagner by 2 points for third, so who knows what the Olympic Committee may do, I hope they do what JSF did and send one to the Olympics and the other to Worlds but who knows
If Ashley doesn't go to the Olympics it will be interesting to see if they still run the Olympic advertisements with her in it or if they'll edit her out.
I think I saw Ashley's Bridgestone commercial only once (?) tonight whereas at Skate America it was played every ad break. There was a definite decrease in its airing after the SP on Wednesday so they may run it but certainly not as much as they would have if Ashley were on the team.

Oh boy...it was every bit as dramatic as I thought it would be! Tennell ends up winning - definitely not something that was expected to happen at season's beginning, but ultimately not an "out of the blue" result either given how the season has played out. Nagasu silver - I had questions and concerns about her ability to hold it together in the FS but there's something about the Olympic year that flips that switch inside her to just fight for everything - we saw this in 2010 and 2014 as well. Chen bronze - amazing that even when sick, she was able to put out her best FS of the season by a mile. Wagner 4th - Man, if only she had hit that salchow she'd be 3rd instead...that's what she should be upset at, not the overall scoring as she DID have control of her destiny...Anyway, given what has transpired I'm inclined to just go with the top 3 finishers for the Olympic team

Ashley placed 4th in performance scores. How does that make sense?

She placed third in the overall components.
I don't think Tennell deserves first place on the components, but it was pretty much impossible to deny her the title here. I'm okay with Karen outscoring Ashley on PCS - she has better skating skills and transitions and it's close on the other three. The technical panel nailed Karen tonight (3 <, 1 <<), but it wasn't enough for her to drop below Wagner.I agree with the results, overall.
I was in the arena and have to say Ashley's performance was not her usual. She was concentrating far more on the technical aspects, even though those weren't particularly well done. After all, it was her choice to do this new FS with very little up front practice time. There wasn't much choreo, and there wasn't much "Ashley" in it, either. She took a gamble, and it didn't pay off.
IMO, the La La Land score is superficial and patter-like, and the section Ashley picked is very repetitious. I felt the first time I heard it that it wasn't the right kind of music for her because it doesn't give her a good enough 'hook' for her to play off. The judges may have had a similar opinion hence the lower PCS.
I rather doubt USFS will once again pick 4th place Ashley over the 3rd place skater (Chen). Ashley today is not the same skater she was back in 2014, when she had been in the GPF 3 times in a row. There was a lot of bad press back in 2014 when Mirai was bypassed for Ashley, but at least there were acceptable reasons for the decision. There really aren't any clear reasons to give Ashley the nod today, while there are legitimate reasons to go with Chen.

In 2010 Nationals, Mirai was also the silver medalist, behind Rachel Flatt. At the Olympics, Mirai came in 4th, behind the 3 greats Yuna Kim, Mao Asada, and Joannie Rochette.
