It looks like s/k do have an enormous accomplishment. Every element they attempted they completed. Sure the score is fake but it does really seem like they did all elements they tried. Huge accomplishment.

4 russian teams qualified to JGPF , plus the first two alternatives.

1) Carreira/Ponomarenko (USA)
2) Skoptcova/Aleshin (RUS)
3) Polishchuk/Vakhnov (RUS)

4) Lajoie/Lagha (CAN)
5) Shevchenko/Eremenko (RUS)
6) Ushakova/Nekrasov (RUS)

And I am pretty sure that Anastasia and Grigory would be there if not for his injury

For all the moaners and groaners out there: The future looks bright, as I'm sure not all of them will split up after one year! ;)

That's what I thought 5 years ago, with 4 Russian teams in the JGP final

But how many of those 4 teams are still together now? Answer - just Stepanova/Bukin! :(

That is why S/B will end up Russian No. 1 team, as they are the only team that stuck together.

Well, let`s wait and see what is going to happen with this generation of young Russian ice dance teams. Russian ice dance is in a time where there isn`t a clear favorite to become Russia`s #1 after Bobrova/Soloviev retire. Sure, there are Stepanova/Bukin and Sinitsina/Katsalapov, but as was mentioned several times in this thread, they both come with their own problems. I think the door is open for at least one of those junior teams or even Loboda/Drozd to make a big splash in the next quad, it`s just a question if one of them will take that chance.

IMO, the best chance have Shpilevaya/Smirnov, Polishchuk/Vakhnov and Ushakova/Nekrasov to actually survive the move up to Seniors. While I do have a soft spot for Skoptcova/Aleshin, since they remind me so much of Sinitsina/Zhiganshin, they are a Kustarova team, which means they either will break up, retire or end up in mediocrity. So, I`m just going to enjoy their skating as long as I can. :)

It’s sad because the future is not bright. The extreme hatred of ijs is too strong. It’s a lack of willingness to abandon previous notions of success and adopt ijs methods. Trying to build success from a 6.0 mindset adopted to ijs is wrong. You must go directly to ijs. Russians are doing 6.0 ice dance with ijs tech elements. It’s the worst method imaginable!

:agree: It's practically a deja vu for me. Too many similarities.

And

I am hoping maybe the last four years have changed the perspective, and that more Russian athletes/coaches will see the benefit in junior dance teams staying together. Four years ago, I&K jumped onto the Olympic podium and the majority of fan discussion was that they would dominate the next quadrennium and the teams they had passed were done. Four years later, Russia is down three junior World gold medal teams, the only ones that stayed together finished second at Nationals, and Bobrova & Soloviev are the ones getting the job done in the fight for international medals.

A different perspective for the young dance teams coming up in Russia today.

I hope so, too. Polishchuk/Vakhnov have been skating together since they are children, I think this is now their 9th season together, so I have hope they will go through the ups and downs together. Also most of the other teams who have medalled on the JGP have been skating together for a few years, the exceptions are Konkina/Yakushev and Khudaiberdieva/Nazarov who both teamed up last season.

The special thing about Ilinykh/Katsalapov was that the success came so quickly to them. They reteamed in 2008 and in their first international season together, they won World Juniors. Although it took them a few seasons to get it together, they won that Olympic medal after only skating together for 5 seasons. Maybe the Russian Fed just took it for granted that one of the new partnerships would develop as quickly.

All that talk about I/K was so silly. It was just because almost everyone was choosing to ignore they didn’t even medal at NHK 2013. It was clear they had no future after Sochi and I said so. There was no reason to believe they would even medal frequently. I would have been silly to predict them for gp wins in the 2014-2015 season. They knew it and broke up. Them winning Olympic bronze meant nothing as gold was only acceptable medal.

I/k did not ever get it together. They had one or two really good competition a season but were almost entirely mediocre. Don’t forget their 16th place TES at 2013 worlds FD.

You don’t have to be together since childhood. Total myth that helps. And i am talking about just ijs history and not entire ice dance history. C/b h/d c/l so many. It’s just not that necessary.

Soloviev should have moved to a partner with better posture years ago. Ruined his potential.

well, by your standards, all those teams are mediocre, because you appreciate nothing less than gold.

Russia should be doing more to get its teams gold and doing what’s necessary to do so. They have such a long gold legacy. There are very contradictory signals on weather the collapse of the ice dance program is considered acceptable or bad. C/l won’t gold, c/b silver so better than any Russian team since 2009.

but if they were russians after their results in worlds 2017 you would not defending them using their past achievements, especially C/L.

Yes I would be very disappointed in a similar way and the discussion over the solutions to their problems would be about what they need to do to get back up. Like since I believe the solution for b/s is moving to dubreil or other North American for c/b it would be different. C/l I could also say go to North America. Mostly all solutions can be found in North America. Novi canton Montreal. Ice dancer land!

Not sure that S/K are going to be the saviours of Russian dance if this clip from the 2nd Russian cup competition is anything to go by.
Is it me or are they very slow?

I have an impression that Vika and Nikita gave up on some elements/parts of their skating that are not very problematic for them - spin or speed and they are working/reworking the whole stuff that actually IS a problem for them - footwork, knee work, not losing elements, skating all the elements on a similar level. Good decision, IMO they are totally able to pull it together later on - now it's time to focus on correcting the flaws.
Zoueva never has been an amazing technical coach, unfortunately, and the thing Nik and Vika's lacking is completeness. Not chemistry, beauty of moves, lines blah blah blah. This will come or is already there. The first thing should be making them technically confident and able to skate a clean program from soup to nuts.

Seeing as how Sinitsina & Katsalapov's technical score tanked when they left Zoueva, it seems to me that she & her team deserve more credit.

I'm glad S&K have a consistent coach again. They clearly need one. Settling down and having a consistent training environment can only help in my opinion.

They were not any good with tech under Zueva? Many missed elements or low levels. This is what it’s like to follow katsalapov teams under any coach. Frequently seen low levels. And they will have low levels under zhulin.

They were 9th in the World, 4th at Europeans, and medaled in both GPs in 2015-16 under Zoueva.

Last year, no matter which way you slice it, they dropped in everything. A coach is a good thing.
