2017 GP Skate Canada Ladies SP

SC is always a gimmee for Osmond as long as Medvedeva isn't on the entry list. She has an adoring audience on her side ready for her standing ovation. That never fails to sway the judges.

Well considering this worked last weekend for Russia, I say what's good for the goose, should be good for the gander!!!

This won't be a gimme for Osmond. The U.S. ladies are coming with the A team, not to mention Pogorylaya and Honda.

What about Masha Sotskova?? She's been on an upward trajectory for a while now and scored 205 at her last event.

Here's how I'm feeling about Ashley....If she's going to re-use 2 programs......She needs to be perfect at both. Hopefully she's made enough changes so that her programs don't look like a highlight real of her career.

I think Kaetlyn is going to bring the house down -- and I don't mean because of home crowd, I mean because she's going to nail it. Just the vibe I'm getting! Hope Ashley has her mojo working, too.

Wow, three swans this time! They should have also invited Zagitova.

Sotskova has been looking strong technically but ultimately I'm not sure if she's gonna have the PCS to back her up. Her programs still kind of put me to sleep, personally. I remember listening to BESP commentating how her programs kinda die in the middle last year and while it's somewhat better, I still think that's still a fair assessment. I honestly don't think Chen is consistent enough to begin with to expect her to do well with a brand new program so soon, especially with how weak her other FS looked at JO. Wagner is giving herself a good shot with the repeat programs, but she's not the most consistent so we'll see there. Honda is strong but still has yet to score quite as high as would be needed to place among the top ladies at this event, and Pogo is still (sadly, imo, because I love her) a question mark. Honestly the only sure podium in my eyes is Osmond, especially because she's at home. This competition is really going to be a bloodbath.

That said, I'm highkey rooting for Pogo and Hongo (although I know she's got next to no shot at the podium, despite having two lovely programs) and hope every lady puts on a great performance this weekend!

This entire event (not only the ladies discipline) is ridiculously stacked. Anna, Maria, Kaetlyn, Ashley, Marin are all in the hunt for gold. Karen could medal as well. And don't even get me started on the pairs!

It's in Canada! I've seen enough competitions in Canada to know Kaetlyn has the gold, the rest are fighting for silver.

As much as I hate to agree with a prolific Mirai basher, Chuckm is 100% correct here.

After seeing Ashley sparkle in the Bridgestone commercial (she's endearing, fun, tongue-in-cheek and gorgeous) during NBC coverage of RC, I can hardly wait for this week-end!

I hope the choreo for HHCC hasn't been changed; it's perfection. She's been working with Shae-Lynne on some new choreography for Moulin Rouge, and I can't wait for the week-end ... it's been too long waiting to see Ashley skate! The 2016 MR was perfect too, but with music, voices, and a story so compelling and dynamic, I'm sure there will be some interesting new bits and nuances here and there. It will still be developing over the next months, so we mustn't expect full strength just yet. But I have confidence in Diva Wagner.:luv17:

Go Ashley!:hap10: Good luck to everyone! :hap10: esp Anna and Karen!

This is one seriously stacked field. Osmond will probably be on top of the podium, beyond that I’m not so sure.

I’m nervous for Anna, I really want her to do well but I’m not so sure. Her performance in Worlds was a real shock for me (as for her and all her fans), I thought she had overcome her problems but Helsinki proved me wrong. I’m not sure how understanding the Russian Fed will be, particularly in an extremely deep field. As long as she gives two good, clean skates I’ll be happy. Also looking forward to Anna T and Viktor in the K&C.

I’m disappointed to see Wagner is repeating programmes again. Good her team not come up with something new? Maria S skated well in Finlandia and should make a strong run for the podium along with Honda.

Out of curiosity, perhaps it's the Nathan Laast Mao Dancer effect, I checked out Karen's "Slow Dancing" score and film snippets, and I think she is making a mistake. The film is quite awful, weak, and the protagonist with her leg issues comes across as unconvincing. I get that Carmen isn't the most original program, but she needs to replace it with a character that is equally strong and compelling.

I wonder why oh why she doesn't pick the theme from "Lust, Caution" by Desplat, The Angel, it's hauntingly beautiful and waiting for the right tragic heroine skater.

The rest of the soundtrack is beautiful too,

Plus Ang Lee is a Taiwanese-American director, like Karen.

But who says she's portraying a character from the film? Maybe she just likes the music? Not all programs have to be character driven. When they're not, skaters usually have dig deeper to portray a sentiment/emotion/whatever.

Is the entries list also the short program skating order or do we not know what order they are skating in yet?

It should be by world ranking. I believe that's how they are doing it this year.

It isn't out yet but we could fill in the blanks ourselves if we wanted to I guess.

I have a question. Is it by current WR or when the selections were made over the summer?

It’s by current WR. So the order will be:
1. Larkyn Austman CAN
2. Kailani Craine AUS
3. Courtney Hicks USA
4. Alaine Chartrand CAN
5. Laurine Lecavelier FRA
6. Marin Honda JPN

7. Rika Hongo JPN
8. Karen Chen USA
9. Ashley Wagner USA
10. Maria Sotskova RUS
11. Anna Pogorilaya RUS
12. Kaetlyn Osmond CAN

I'm sure not everyone here has been following the Russia Cup domestic events, but Anna competing in the second stage of that. She came third in the SP with a score of 69.80 behind Polina Tsurskaya (71.94) and Stanislava Konstantinova (73.22) and then withdrew. Anna and Stasya got a bonus (I think for level four spins average GOE at least +2) - that's something the Russian Fed is doing for all domestic events except Nats. I believe her coach said she had some minor back pain and they were being careful for Skate Canada. That was two weeks ago.

What about Masha Sotskova?? She's been on an upward trajectory for a while now and scored 205 at her last event.

Maria still doesn’t always rotate her triple triples and Kaetlyn is in Canada... so even though Maria is now throwing an arm over her head doesn’t mean she’s a guarantee for a win or podium finish(although it may seem that way)

Well, for me, Maria is a safe bet on the podium. Don't forget she was 2nd and 3rd in last year GP events, qualified for the GP Final, and she is in a better shape this year. Her jumps are visibly better in the most recent senior B event. Her programs put me to sleep, but her consistency should get her on the podium, probably after Kaetlyn.

I guarantee no-one will be as fabulous as Queen Kailani. ;)
