2017 World Ladies FS

I cried like a baby for Anna, then went in Heaven with both Gabby and Kaetlyn, and of course Evgenia. There were 3 great programs for the world podium. What a treat, what an unexpected awesome result.
Congratulation to all the skaters! Karen had a very good skating but some small melt down in the end. She did great for US, but judges should get some primes as part of the deal was done when they propped Ashley through huge PCS. Had Ashely placed further back...
Still happy US has 3 spots, S Korea, as the host country really deserves 2 spots.
Anna, is a gorgeous skater and this is what we shall remember.
Big bravo to Evgenya, Kaetlyn and Gabby!

Carolina was held up big time. 130 points for a flawed program with popped jumps and she was slow too. Her PCS was way to high for what she put out there.

AMAZING outcome for Canada!!! 3 spots so Alaine can go to the Olympics next year and 2 girls on the podium! So awesome!

Sad for Anna and Ashley though. And Japan's 3rd spot.

LOL Alaine Chartrand probably has gotten more coverage here than ever before and she isn't even competing lol.

The whole competition is a total mess. I am afraid that the men's FS will be even worse. Poor Anna... Seems that Zagitova will definitely turn senior next season, since nothing is guarenteed in the girls' world, and for RFSF, it is better to strike while the iron is hot.

Most importanly, Evgenia helped Russia secure those 3 spots for the Olympics.

Why should I stop? I'm telling you facts and trend for these facts. It's annoying you want to coddle them. They are athletes, not baby.
Yes, Wakaba is not competitive. She's not competitive ever. That's the whole point. Even when she is clean, her PCS is crap compare to other girls. Why does JSF continue to give her big PCS at home when she's no where near that in real competitions. Isn't that the same damn problem with Agnes?

Hey, now. Wakaba won a Grand Prix bronze - in her first senior season, at that - at Trophee France... beating the now World bronze medalist Gabby Daleman, Gracie Gold, and Mao Asada.

Also, while her Worlds FS had costly errors, she had a superb SP in her first Worlds. Landed 3Z+3T in both programs. And 11th for your first Worlds isn't terrible at all.

Anna put too much pressure on herself I think. The splats happen when she gets too nervous. Overall she had a good season though and I would say she's still in the mix for the 3rd Olympic spot. Definitely not the favorite for the 2nd spot, but her highs have been higher than the likes of Liza, Elena, and Maria this season and they all had at least one bad skate too (Liza and Elena have each had a few. Polina has also had rough spots this season.

I think basically Anna blew her chance to set herself up as the solid #2 Russian lady heading into the Olympic season. I wouldn't say she's out of it though, she just moves to being one of the girls fighting for the 3rd spot. To be honest, Anna seems to do better as the underdog, kind of like Ashley. It's probably not the best thing in terms of winning titles and medals, but I don't doubt her ability to bounce back from disappointment given how many times she's done it in the past.

It will be interesting to see how the Canadian ladies handle being World medalists next season. They are definitely in the mix for medals at the Olympics

Well, we knew Evgenia would probably get top spot (or at least top 3)... I give a lot of credit to Sotskova too. In wake of Pogorilaya's unfortunate meltdown, at least she skated well enough to secure a top 12 spot (also getting to the final flight, and 8th for your first Worlds is a good achievement!), even if the FS had errors. Kinda reminds me of Kaetlyn Osmond's first Worlds in 2013, and we know where she is now. ;) Although Maria needed a better result here in the pressure cooker of Russian ladies' skating.

Starting from the SP at these Worlds the Canadian ladies really won me over. Great skating basics with tremendous athleticism and sparkling verve. I thought for the LP both could have filled the nuance of the music or emoted a bit more but, that's work for next season. Admirable skate from them. Congrats.

A lot of respect for Karen Chen too.

You are absolutely wright! My first shock expressed in a previous message was by the huge PCS for both Carolina and Ashley. You can't get big PCS when steps and spins + excellence in jumps is not there. Judges should pay for things like this. I want to mention that neither Ashley nor Caro are guilty, but the judges!

This.
I agree I find the ladies boring. It does get sort of repetitive after awhile. At least with the men there's 6+ men who could take the title! My dad agrees he hates the ladies says their programs all look the same. Sameness is the word I would use to describe the ladies. Nothing memorable even Mai's "Cinderella" and Rika's "Riverdance"didn't do it for me this time. The men, ice dance and even pairs are far more entertaining and interesting!

Rika's Riverdance was really good last year. It's so sad what happened to her this year. I was physically hurt watching her in this competition.

The ISU has killed Ladies' skating. They've removed and de-incentivized most of everything that is beautiful and interesting and engaging, replacing it with pointless tacked-on movements everywhere.

It's unbelievable that the men, with all their quads and technical demands, are somehow outstripping the women in terms of artistry and choreography. Idk. Maybe age has something to do with it.

We're lucky that some of the top men have personalities and care about artistry or at least performing. Otherwise men would be super boring too. Hanyu is a gift from the heavens, he has forced the other guys to still put some emphasis on the artistry. We should be thanking Daisuke Takahashi too, because it's his spirit and performances that also lifted Japanese Men's skating to where it is now. If Nathan Chen wins this competition and/or the Olympics, though, we will likely just see an era of people cloning his strategy. Lots of quads, some basic attention to everything else, and that's it.

To hear Johnny Weir tell it, and I'm not sure if this is an accurate reflection (but I think it's close to the mark), her meltdown would be viewed as an embarrassment by the Russian Federation.

In an extremely competitive discipline in a politically charged sport, it may be the end of major competition for her. I don't think the Russian Fed is as softhearted as we are.

Anna can claw her way back to the top. You look at her and you know she's hungry. I said before she is the most striking Russian girl in the damn line up. She will be fine because the other chicks aren't better than her. Who will take the third spot? Elena? Liza? Maria? None of them are better than her. She controls her own destiny.

If she doesn't make it, it is because she can't jump anymore. In that case, it is fair she doesn't go. I am not worried about Russian politics putting young Anna out in the snow field in Siberia over this.

Your inconsistency with logic is astounding. Because you like Anna you emphatically declare she'll survive a bad outing and yet in Wakaba's debut season you said the fed will dump her if she has even one mistake and she won't be able to ever improve. Anna has another epic meltdown and you're of a completely different mindset. That's one moody crystal ball

It was a good day for Canada which earned three spots for the next Olympics. I'm especially happy for Osmond who finally nailed her free program. Daleman scored 141.33 in her free program but Osmond managed to overtake her and secured a silver medal, which was exciting to watch.

1. Evgenia Medvedeva 233.41
2. Kaetlyn Osmond 218.13
3. Gabrielle Daleman 213.52

Finally this season of ladies skating is over, the summation of it being exactly what I thought it would be - the skating is tacky, superficial, repetitive, and forgettable. There wasn't a single good long program in this competition. Lots of random movements going on, more and more of something happening, but ultimately all meaningless. No real development of worthwhile themes, no real artistry. This was exactly representative of a Trumpian era. Lots of big, empty, manic showboating, all punctuated by plenty of cringe-worthy moments.

I always enjoy your rants in the name of artistry, but I personally wouldn't go that far. My sister and I decided the word that comes to mind is half baked. Pretty much everyone is capable of more than what they showed. One hopes and imagines. I found all the medalists very deserving, with honorable mention to Karen. The programs won't change until the rules change.

I'm in the minority, but I found Ashley mesmerizing from an emotional point of view.

Was it a particularly great display of skating skills, transitions, or elements? No. (Don't laugh! I'm just being honest!) She looked like a 6.0 skater out there, and while it's not good for competition in 2017, it's incredibly watchable and enjoyable.

She definitely is. For me the only distracting thing is her less than stellar extensions. Otherwise she's perfectly enjoyable to watch. But I still think that her performance here is less captivating than her GP outings.

And there is the reason why RusFed does not care about Pogo. Dear Lord, does she have to fall that dramatically every single time? Does that coach teach anything, it's FS 101 and the first thing you learn. It is just unacceptable at this high level. Talk about second hand embarrassment times four.

With Evgenia 100% and Zagitova 99.9% on the team, I hope RusFed make the right choice and send a less embarrassing skater as the third one on the team.

It's not granted at all that Alina will move to seniors next season according to her own words. Obviously she'd have a good chance of making Olympic team but we don't know whether she's going to keep her current frame and form - I am convinced that she has some growing spurts before her and "filling out". She also strikes me as sloppy, not sure how it will hold vs international seniors even with loads of backing from Russian fed. Maybe she can improve further, maybe she will regress a la Kuchvalska or Serafimova, we don't know yet.

Anna is injured, so she reverted. I'm not comfortable making it all mental. Her condition isn't what she needed it to be. I don't care what happens, she has a supporter in me.

TAT mentioned that ISU is considering implementing some new "Medvedeva" rules ( removing the second-half bonus and allowing/rewarding more 3-3-3s) soon.

Also they speculated that Evgenia will be introducing new combos next season.
