2017 World Ladies FS

I'm so gutted for Anya. :( That was the reaction of someone who knew she just blew her chance to go to the Olympics. The Russian federation is not going to let her go after that performance. And they have the depth to bury her at Nationals if needed. Heartbreaking.

My Zhenya. I've run out of superlatives to describe how fabulous she is. I love that she does not rest on her laurels and incorporated new variations on her jumping here. It's so cool how she introduced Tano and Rippon toe loops and a stunning Rippon salchow here! I also like that she didn't do any extra 3toes here so no one can accuse her of showing off. She was also extremely dialed-in to her performance here until even after the music ended. It's almost like she keeps up with criticisms of her skating and works hard to improve them! People have gone from just flatly saying she is overscored to now saying "she is overscored, BUT..." Progress! :luv17:

My beautiful, intelligent Masha. The good news is she skated better than at Euros. The bad news is with Zagitova and Tsurskaya moving up next year, her position is very much in jeopardy. She's going to have to kill it every time next season.

I'm overjoyed with Karen's performances here. I was one of the nay-sayers but she proved me wrong. Not only that, but she posted personal best scores IIRC. So impressive!! Very pleasantly surprised we held onto three spots with room to spare. Karen should be in like Flynn if she skates anywhere like this at Nationals. And she'll have earned it!

I was also proved wrong when I said the Canadians would falter in the long program. I do think Osmond tends to be overscored and would have given Gabby Daleman the silver, but there's no question this is the best Katelyn has skated and she totally earned her spot on the podium.

Very disappointed for Japan, but Mai came through huge today. The fight for Japan's Olympic team is going to be one compelling bloodbath!

I just got back from a hiking trip and I am super ecstatic for the Canadian ladies. Who would've thought that at the beginning of the season that they would be podium contenders? Super happy for Gabby and Kaetlyn and congrats! Would've had the gap between them smaller because Gabby skated cleanly but hey they got themselves a medal and would be in the mix for Olympics next year! I lost it when Kaetlyn landed the 2A-2T-2Lo I'm like go gurrl pushhhhh you're almost there!

Super happy for the Americans for keeping their 3 spots!I was a bit skeptical about Karen being sent to worlds but I have to shove all my doubts in my mouth. 4th in her Worlds debut that's something to be proud of!!

Evgenia is a beast. Unless Zagitova turns senior or Kaetlyn starts putting two error-free skates consistently, no one would beat her at the Olympics.

Gutted for Anna, and team Japan :(( Especially Anna, is she injured or having confidence issues?

I left the ISU site up on my phone so that as soon as I woke up I could catch the result. Here is how this went:

- search for the Aussie flag. Oh, poor Kailani, what happened? :sad21:

- wait, does this mean no Olympic spot?

- search for who won - OH YEAH KICK ALL OF THE BOOTY MY MOON QUEEN

- oh. two Canadian ladies on the podium. joy.

- ugh, Kostner too high.

- OH MY GOD CHEN BEAT WAGNER AND THE US LADIES KEPT THREE SPOTS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  this is gonna piss the Mirai fans off so much

- wth happened with the rest of the results

- good thing i didn't get up this looks like it was a trainwreck at some point

But mostly I am just sad about the Olympic spot. I guess that's what Nebelhorn is for, but I had been hoping to avoid that for the ladies. Oh, and happy that my Queen is still the Queen, even knowing she'll be getting mercilessly trashed because HOW DARE EVIL RUSSIAN WIN.

I'm a Mirai fan. I'm fine with Karen doing so well. Of course I adore them both. When Karen faltered at 4CC, I knew she'd come back strong at worlds since she got off the pressure of winning nationals and fixed her skates. Sorry to disappoint you.

Woke up to hear about the results. Have yet to see the videos. Will watch later.

Sad about the two spots for Japan. I hope this encourages Mao more to fight for that Olympic spot. It will be tough. What's more sad is that it will definitely be her last season next season.

Hope Satoko can recover by next season but any fracture or injury is complicated and takes time to heal. It takes a lot of rehabilitation as well just to go back to "normal". How much more if you're an athlete/skater.

Cheers to all the winners and skaters~ Thank you for this season!

Lil Bet's StSeq is amazing! I just started to watch some of the videos of the performances and chose her first :)

Seriously...that StSeq! I think the judges were a bit lenient on her TES a tad but I don't think they value her PCS enough. The scores are what the scores are so I really try to avoid discussing specifics of PCS because it's pretty pointless so I'll just say I hope they start to trend up with her. IMO she deserves them but the judges are who they are and they can't break my enjoyment of watching her skate.

I'd say she delivered this year and if I were playing the music in the KnC for her no doubt I'd cue up DMX "Rough Riders". I feel like she's the one handling her Mom

She's often underscored in PCS... :( But nonetheless, a job well done! From 12 last year, to 9th this year! :agree:

karne is weird. projecting that Mirai's fans think Karen stole her spot. Very very odd individual.

Some people think in a binary way. Like you can't be fans of two skaters. I'm a fan of Nathan, but also Yuzuru, Javier, Patrick, Shoma, Boyang, Jason.... The list goes on. Life is too short for hate and resentment. It's best to give as much love as you can. It's healthier.

Yes, because I know nothing about loving more than one skater

There was even a whole thread dedicated to arguing that Chen should be kicked off the team for Mirai. Someone even wrote an article here to be put in their local newspaper about it. Maybe you weren't one of them, but there were a truckload of Mirai fans calling for Chen to be kicked off and Mirai to go, because if Chen and Bell went it was surefire guaranteed the US ladies would only get two spots...

Took a long time for me to catch up because of FujiTV's annoying blocks :curse:

1. Evgenia Medvedeva: What can I say? We saw it coming and it happened. At least she actually did something different this time (more tanos) that made her SB be deserved...
2. Kaetlyn Osmond: She deserved the bronze IMO, but either way I was happy to see her get onto the podium. This is a very rewarding event for her after working so hard to move her status up this season. You were fabulous Kaetlyn!
3. Gabrielle Daleman: I'm so proud of Gabby doing her best here. Even with the bobble at the end, Gabby showed a powerful and fun performance. I loved it and I hope this newfound consistency will continue on.
4. Karen Chen: After numerous discussions and arguments about the U.S. ladies, it makes Karen doing so well even more satisfying. Karen really shined here with two spectacular programs (even with the mistakes in the FS). Hopefully people will stop picking on her now.
5. Mai Mihara: 15th to 5th is an extremely impressive jump. Mai's determination in the FS allowed her to skate well with another good FS performance. It's unfortunate that despite her efforts, Japan still lost a spot. Anyway, I hope to see her at WTT!
6. Carolina Kostner: Though this wasn't the best FS she's done this season, I still loved it. The mistakes were somewhat disruptive, but the way she got back into the performance right after and highlights her maturity and beauty even more. Honestly I wasn't even expecting her to be in the top 7, but she proved me wrong.
7. Ashley Wagner: I have to admit, this was pretty disappointing, even as an Ashley fan. It's a relief that Karen skated very well to secure 3 spots but very shocking that Ashley was rather off. I applaud her for fighting through the whole program, but in a field where everyone does well, this kind of outing will be well lost in the crowd. I hope that Ashley can have redemption at WTT if she's going.
8. Maria Sotskova: At least she did better than at Euros, but many were expecting better. However, this is only her first Worlds, and 8th place is actually a good result too. I'm really hoping for her to do well next season (and with more lively programs, please).
9. Elizabet Tursynbaeva: Though I thought she should've beaten Maria overall, I'm still happy to see her place well and secure 2 spots for Kazakhstan. Great job! :cheer2:
10. Dabin Choi: Also should've beaten Maria, but I'm just so happy that she did her absolute best here and got 2 spots for Korea for the Olympics. Dabin has improved so much in just one season and I'm looking forward to see what she brings to the table next season.

Haven't seen Mariah yet, and as for Anna, Rika, Zijun, and Wakaba...:cry:

Not sure who these people were fans of but there certainly were a lot of people arguing that Karen should not be sent to Worlds after her 4CC performance. Gotta love that Karen is the main reason the US keeps itsthree spots.

Oh, I just realised that Evgenia's Lutz edge was called correct. She still had ! on Europeans. Can anyone confirm if it was ok? (just 3 skaters got 'e' or '!' btw, Ashley was one of them).

So happy for the Canadian girls!!! I always love Keatlyn, she is just like sunshine, brighten the whole arena when she skates. What surprised me is Gaby! I have to give big credit to whoever did the "packaging" , love her makeup and hair and costumes. She just looks so much more refined than before. That goes to skating to. The last impression I had was a powerful skater with unappealing skating style, now she is quite elegant on the ice, bravo for an excellent FS!

What happened to Zijun Li???? I wanted to check the Video but it is blocked for some reason. I thought she might have tons of downgrades but the protocol shows not that many. Her PCS, her GOE is just unthinkable for a skater her level, no falls no pops! There is rumor that she behaved like a brat, did not go for the FS draw, and might have done something stupid at home too. But whatever she did, this is still supposed to be a sport! I read in this thread that she skated beautifully. Whatsoever, that's a bummer.

So sad for Anna:sad21: don't want to see things like this happen to any skater, hope she will put it behind her and start all over again.

I'm steadfast Karen should have been sent to World. I think there might be one or two who wanted Karen off the team. It's always should have been Mirai vs. Mariah because they both sucked at USN, and the scores were close.

Have we ever seen such movement on the ladies podium in an Olympic cycle like we have seen in the last 3 years? Only Med has repeated as a medalist while everyone else has been one and done so far. It seems like no one is consistent now to stay on the podium for more then one year. Usually heading into the Olympics the skaters are narrowed down to just a few for the podium but there are literally about a dozen ladies who can get on the podium in 2018.

Ha 7 Europeans and Japan. Good luck N.American ladies.

Judges have to be dying to reward a clean skate. I expect new PCS highs for Evgenia.

I kind of get that actually. So many messy skates make her look even better.

Gaby's 3t3t is Hanyu 3A good

Gabby's 3T3T is a work of art.

Gabby Daleman = World medalist

Definitely didn't think it would happen for her this year, but holy crap!

This + dance = the most unexpected day.

(sad it has to come at the expense of so many skaters bombing - but Gabby would've won a medal even with more clean skates, so that's good).

My exact reaction. I've always liked her, but I didn't think she'd end up in this position. From 21st two years ago to 9th last season to a bronze medal

Genuinely happy KnC moments really are THE BEST

Gabby and Katelyn's KnC reactions were honestly the highlight of my night! It's so nice to see so much joy

I loved their reactions so much. They both had me in tears.

Love that squeal when Gabby and Kaetlyn hugged before Gabby got on the podium.

Me too! It was so nice to see how happy they were for each other.

2 years ago, Gabby was 21st at Worlds. 1 year ago, Kaetlyn failed to make the World Team. Astounding progression

SO impressive! She did amazing.

Given Sotnikova made the last Olympic team, I don't think anyone is really out of consideration for next year. The Fed will send whoever delivers at Nationals, provided they at least have some good results next season before that.

Sotnikova had a FS meltdown comparable to Pogo's here at the GPF just a couple months before the Olympics. She still made the Olympic team.

Liza was a reigning World champion and was left off the World Team the next year. And the year she won everything in sight, she had come off a bad season where she was 10th at Nationals.

Anything can happen.

I am so sad for Anna. She is still my sentimental favorite. I hope she takes this and uses it to fuel her next year. One bad competition doesn't destroy a season of success. She is still so talented and has a lot left to show in this sport.

Evgenia slayed. I also love her because I am 12 years older than her and she likes a show I loved when I was 10 years old. Haha, it makes me feel less old (Sailor Moon for the win!).

I am so happy for Kaetlyn. Her talent has been obvious for years. I'm so happy to see her hard work rewarded after so much disappointment.

Karen did so well for her first worlds, what a huge comeback for her after 4CC. She has so much talent, I hope she carries that with her into the Olympic year. The judges are willing to reward her if she gains consistency.

I love Ashley but she never gained momentum. That said she was part of retaining the 3 spots (which I will admit I thought was not going to happen). I hope she learns from this slump and is ready to fight next year.

Can we start a prayer circle or something to send good vibes to Anna? Because if she doesn't get to the Olympics next year I will (1) be very upset, (2) use a lot of profanity, and (3) probably turn the olympics into a drinking game to drown my sorrows.

Two long posts in a row is what happens when I read the entire thread afterwards. Oops...

1-2-3 staying the same from SP to FS doesn't happen very often under IJS for singles. It's actually a relief to see skaters perform how they're capable for both segments.

It's really cool to see (and not just because I love my Canadian girls). I'm so impressed that they both managed it. Should give them confidence going forward.

I will also have to agree with this. This will be the 1st Worlds where I personally won't be going back to re-watch any programs from the ladies event.

I won't go back and watch very many, but definitely Kaetlyn's SP (it's been great almost all year and this was the best performance of it) and probably both the Canadian girls FS and Gabby's SP, but that has a lot to do with how the event turned out, not just the programs. I'd definitely go back and watch their reactions to their scores.

Evgenia did not know, I think, why people were cheering anna and closed her ears not to hear the points. While Gabby heard evgenias points she clapped with the audience. Like she had got power from it. Gabbys speed on the ice is huge.

I love that about Gabby. She seems to skate her best following big scores. She skated right after Evgenia both programs and it was the best event she's ever had. She's not easily intimidated.

Anna put too much pressure on herself I think. The splats happen when she gets too nervous. Overall she had a good season though and I would say she's still in the mix for the 3rd Olympic spot. Definitely not the favorite for the 2nd spot, but her highs have been higher than the likes of Liza, Elena, and Maria this season and they all had at least one bad skate too (Liza and Elena have each had a few. Polina has also had rough spots this season.

I think basically Anna blew her chance to set herself up as the solid #2 Russian lady heading into the Olympic season. I wouldn't say she's out of it though, she just moves to being one of the girls fighting for the 3rd spot. To be honest, Anna seems to do better as the underdog, kind of like Ashley. It's probably not the best thing in terms of winning titles and medals, but I don't doubt her ability to bounce back from disappointment given how many times she's done it in the past.

It will be interesting to see how the Canadian ladies handle being World medalists next season. They are definitely in the mix for medals at the Olympics

I think for the most part it will help them. Gabby's talked a few times about just recently starting to believe she really belonged with the top ladies. And as she's stared to believe that, she's had her best international results. Winning a world medal will sure help her with that. Apparently all her coaches, Dylan Moscovitch and Javi sat her down in the locker room and told her that she was good enough to medal at Worlds. And Kaetlyn I believe has also mentioned not always fully believing in herself IIRC.

Starting from the SP at these Worlds the Canadian ladies really won me over. Great skating basics with tremendous athleticism and sparkling verve. I thought for the LP both could have filled the nuance of the music or emoted a bit more but, that's work for next season. Admirable skate from them. Congrats.

A lot of respect for Karen Chen too.

IMO Kaetlyn has done this program better in terms of performance. I think she was a little tight, which is understandable. But yes, always room to keep improving.

Now that the event was over I went back and watched Gabby's and Kaetlyn's free skates and the big difference to me was that Gabby really seemed to be enjoying herself while Kaetlyn was feeling the pressure. But that is to be understood. No one - (and I am pretty sure without going back and checking) but no one really thought Gabby would be on the podium here! Although I do think some one might have predicted it more as a joke! Kaetlyn was being picked to medal so she was under the pressure more then Gabby. Even if Gabby had dropped to 6th or 7th here - she still would have done well by placing 3rd in the long - so she had nothing to lose and she skated that way!
And for those saying Alaine must be jumping with joy - no so fast - we have a couple other ladies who may surprise next season. And if Alaine does not get her act back together soon, one of them might just past her. Larkyn has been proving herself capable each time out this season. She added a 3F for Canadians and then added the Lutz for the Challenge! If she gets so she can land them both together in a program and Alaine makes big mistakes.... well who knows!

I also saw that. I spent a lot of Kaetlyn's program just going "hold it together, hold it together". And I think you're right about the reason too. Either way, they both did amazing.

I think if Gracie starts to skate again, judges will inflate the hell of her scores to put her on top just what they did this season with Kaetlyn: big marks coming out from nowhere instead of a small new PB by 1 or 2 points.

Gracie, Kaetlyn, Adelina are the type of skaters judges really like.

To be fair, Kaetlyn was a young skater showing a lot of promise with a couple very good results (2012 SC win, 8th at 2013 Worlds) who then had a terrible injury and missed an entire season. When she came back she struggled somewhat, understandably. So it had been a couple of years since she was in good form. Not surprising that she scores would be much bigger now. Though I agree that the judges really like her.
