North Korean pair were also amazing, and they struggled with the twist last season but cleaned it up. TBH, I don't know why Japan doesn't have better pair skaters. Is it a lack of talent in pair skills? Or is it because they don't train often? Bad coaches? I don't skate, and I know pairs skating is very hard, but I always thought that if you gnaw at it for years, you'll eventually be able to do a triple twist... but Kihara still doesn't.

Then again, Klimov still has a weak twist, so I guess training can't change everything.

The reason for Japan's weakness in pair and ice dance has been explained, but I'd like to add my personal opinion that I'm not surprised at North Korea's progress in pair. North Korea is obviously taking China's route, and they consider success in sport as a gain in political status for the country. They focus on a selected few sports but they make sure that those chosen to train and compete are the very best and receive the best training conditions. Elite athletes in North Korea are also granted more privileges and support than ordinary citizens. At 2016 Olympics, they sent 31 competitors in 9 sports and left Rio with a total of 7 medals, including 2 golds, which is a stellar ratio.

I'm so torn as well.

I really loved that program, but I also love their Cirque Du Solei program that they brought back from last year. Both Shae Lynn Bourne masterpieces.
