She already had fantastic SS and jumps back then, even medaled at the Worlds. Inconsistent, yes, but she has never improved on that without lowering her tech contents.

No she certainly wasn't. At that age Wagner pretty much tied with Zhang, was doing better than Nagasu, and was slightly behind Czisny and Flatt.

But I agree with the rest of your points. :)

Fair enough. I don't think we need to see things in the same light. Taking Kostner for example, she has always been a controversial skater. People have different opinions on this regards.

Czisny is one of a kind. I might be biased because she is one of my all time favourites while Flatt was not. But Flatt's frantic style would kill it in this time and age. Her skating especially her footwork had all it takes to score high within today rules.

Wagner is lucky she was in between two eras so she had time to develop both in artistry and technical aspects through to her 20s. At the time the old veterans left the scene, and both Mirai and Caroline were regress at that point. My point is she had time to work on her skating without people questioning her technical/artistry or the lack thereof. Also during that time all eyes was on only Mao/Yuna TBH.

It seems like Wakaba, Satoko and Marin are thinking longterm this season and are making adjustments. That could leave the door open for Rika, Kaori and Mai especially early in the season. They seem more in form at the moment anyway.

I think in GPs we will see totally different skaters and performances. Last season proved that it's way too early to make predictions, as those who were more in form at the start of the season, ended not selected for olympics or Worlds.

True. Things are always more intense at the start of an Olympic year. This year seems more relaxed.

And i don't know why "grace" should be the standard. Every girl don't have to be a Marin Honda or a Satoko Miyahara.

Last chance for junior girls to win a medal in JGP this season. I hope that someone will medal, only two medals (two bronzes) in a JGP season is sad.
I agree that different girls have different strength and there’s a trade-off most of the time. While Marin and Satoko are graceful and refined, they don’t have the power nor skate as “big” as Kaori.
However, for me grace comes down to posture, line and extension. And these features have always been very important in the evaluation of skating, in the past even more so than now under IJS. And I do think there’s room left for Kaori to improve in this area.

Update from Wakaba's camp ... "She had pain in top of the foot from inflammation during Autumn Classic, but it seems to be a bit better now. Hurts sometimes when she pushes the ice with her toe so she practices decided numbers in advance. Now preparing for Skate Canada" #樋口新葉

can't bear to hear about her being in pain. What a crappy start of the season, i was really hoping to see her do really well this season. Hopefully she's fully healed soon and qualifies for the GPF

Congrats to Yuhana for her medal. Sad for Nana but at least she was clean in SP and scored well. Hope she will do better at sectionals.
Just 3 medals dor Japan this season (3 bronzes). JSF has to react.

I don't think 13-14years old japanese juniors not winning gold medals after gold medals is something to be worried about. It's more of a russian thing to be that consistent already this early in their career. Japanese girls tend to have a slow and steady growth. I'd rather watch them grow and improve with time and bring in results later in the senior circuit than peak really early and struggle to deliver the same way in senior circuit. Their results are only disappointing if you compare them with the russian girls but the russian field is something else, there's no need to try and compare. I think we can praise the japanese girls for their performances this JGP season, there's a lot of potential in many of those little girls. I was really happy to discover Rion Sumiyoshi, Yuhana Yokoi and Tomoe Kawabata especially, who turned out to become one of my favorite juniors just for that beautiful jumping technique. Of course they have a lot to work on but they're only kids let's not forget that. Being successful as a junior doesn't necessarily guarantee a successful senior career just like struggling as a junior doesn't mean you cannot go and become a champion as a senior. They have all the time to get more consistent or learn how to connect more with the music or fix their technical issues. I will enjoy watching them grow.

Personally i don't compare Japanese results with Russian results. I compare this season results with the 3 previous seasons results. When you look the results of 2015 and 2016 JGPs, it's not the same picture than this year. There was at least one Japanese girl on almost every podium, sometimes even a Japanese sweep, 3 girls qualified for JGPF. In 2017 there was one medalist per event, one girl qualified for JGPF.
When you compare with this season, it's worlds apart.
I don't see what is bad on pointing this. The results are not the same than usual. This is sad and i want the situation to get better.
And i don't see when and where i bring Russians into this. When did i compare the Japanese results with the Russian results?

ugh why so defensive? where did i say that you brought the russians in or even that it was bad to point out the poor results this season? I don't see which part of my comment looked like i was coming at you or whatever  I was just sharing my own opinion on the state of the japanese junior this year, calm down :noshake: You're very free to give your opinion however you want, i was personally saying that i'm not too bummed out by their results this year. Also let's not forget that the competition is a lot tighter this year. japanese juniors could podium in the past years but this year the competition is just crazy. The korean girls have seriously upped their game and the russians are stronger than ever.

Well, i didn't get the tone of your post then. Sorry.
IMO Russian field was harder to beat last year than this. Koreans has improved a lot yes. Technically and artistically. And judges are ready to give them big scores as we saw with Yelim. But Japanese could have competed with them if they were not stagnating a bit IMO.

Well, personally i try to stay positive and hope for the best. I too feel frustrated by the japanese coaches, i feel like they aren't doing what's necessary to really bring out the girls best! And it makes me want to scream at my screen in every competition but i'm already mad at the judges every time, i don't have the energy to do both :drama:

By the way Rika just posted videos of her landing perfects 3A-3T, 3Lz-3LO, 3F-3LO on instagram. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo34MFGgZKJ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
She might be out for blood this season :devil: wonder if she's planning to add both sometime soon
Her base value would be monstrous if she could land the a 3-3LO combo in the SP in addition to the 3A. I don't know what the plans are but i just cross my fingers she's not getting too ambitious and she can stay consistent all throughout the season with whatever layout she has planned.
I must admit i'm way too emotionally attached to this little girl, i'd probably cry if she breaks down again this season :slink:

She's doing loop combos in practice since last season. Would be interesting if she add a 3-3lo in the FS.

Yeah, Rika has been training those combos for a while now... I’m sure she will only do it in competition when she’s consistent with it. She’s definitely going in the right direction, she need to up her BV even more because her GOE is not super high for jumps. Her non-jump elements should be getting some +4s on a good day though.
If she add a 3Lz3Lo this season things will get even more interesting...
