2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Apparently, Alina said she is training quad loop.... I pray to all Gods we do NOT get another video of her doing underrotated horribly landed "quad" in harness. Please... let the girl rest. She looked very exhausted in her FS.

Well, this seems to be a new PR strategy for her team. That quad flip training video came a few days after people were talking about her Nationals performance, especially her long program. And the 3Lo has been her most problem jump with pops and URs this season, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do put up a 4Lo training video. I mean if people can see that she is working on a 4Lo, there must be nothing inherently wrong with her 3Lo, right?

If Mishin wasn't coaching some of her biggest rivals for the World team, such as the current European Champion, I'd say she should go do some serious consultation with him on her jumps.

Let's not forget how diverse Russia is. Oh well, Russians are indeed very diverse. There are a lot of them and a lot of them are very different. The only only other country which as diverse as Russia is US. Liza is your not typical "European Russian" and not a stereotypical blond-blue-eyes regular Slavic girl. She is a Tatar or Udmurt, iirc. So, yeah, there are probably some Asian/Middle Eastern culture in her. She was born somewhere close to St Petersburg, AFAIK, but that's her genes. That gives her flavor and different style. I'm all in for diversity in styles, cultures and choreography.
Tuk's last name is in honor of this man:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokhtamysh. So she might as well be one of the 15 million direct descendants of Genghis Khan himself! :agree::laugh2:

No mistake that one of her nicknames is "Empress". :)

Idk why almost everybody is assuming Liza is clearly in the worlds team - we all would like to see her, but I'm really worried about her regaining stamina for the FS after pneumonia. Bedrest and weeks without training really set you back a lot at this level and her gpf layout is really ambitious, even if she doesn't have tons of transitions.

Why? They've said Nationals, Europeans and the Russian Cup Final will determine who goes to Worlds, fact is that only 1 that has taken care of business at Nationals/Euros was Sofia. As long as everyone knows that Russian Cup will determine Worlds I'm fine with them doing essentially a 'skate-off' - this might become the norm for Russia to deal with the situation of a crowded field.

Why? Because Alina is bringing her Japanese bred Akita Masaru to the World championships! And because Alina has won 3 golds and 2 silvers this season and becuse worlds is the only title she hs not won. Rusfed will send her. If they dont send Alina and Masaru to Japan it could start another Russo - Japan conflict! :eeking: ;) Cant have that.

yea it seems like alina's spot is pretty much confirmed. why would she bring masaru to japan if not for worlds? it would be a bad idea to go to japan for a week just for a sponsorship and then go back to russia, it would disrupt her training.

if she has to participate in a skate off to get her worlds spot she definitely wouldn't be going to japan beforehand since she would need to train. so there is no scenario where alina would be going to japan with her dog unless she's going for worlds.

Today Daniil commented European Gala exhibition and said who will go to Junior Nationals from "Khrustalny". Trusova, Sherbakova, Kostornaya and Usacheva. Valieva will not go because of a small injury.
:gaah:

That would be sad, for both Kamila and Maya.

Of course, it didn't work this time around with her flips being called. But, you know, let's try again anyway.

I really hope that next season, Alina will get programs kind of like her Survivor gala/in a more modern style like that. Her past/current programs have been good, but I still don't get why her team is trying to sell a "classics" image so badly on Alina. I wish that they would work more on artistic refine, close to what Alena Kostornaia is superb at. Skaters like Carolina Kostner have proved that you don't need a million arm movements back and forth to get amazing PCS. I'm not a fan of stuffing in transitions just for the sake of trying to stuff as many as possible as you can. I think all the transitions are really wearing out Alina during her program, and it seems like she can do the jumps, but all the almost unnecessary movement is making her tired.

alina wanted to do carmen, eteri actually seemed reluctant about it at first. idk what they were thinking with POTO, but at least it worked out in the end. none of her other programs have been very "classic" except for DQ. her black swan program was pretty modern i thought

I think Alina could do something like Survivor for next season’s SP and maybe even a lyrical piece for the free. Eteri’s team seems to prefer warhorses for Alina and even though she performs these programs very well, I think it’d be nice to see Alina experiment with some different genres and styles. I thought her Survivor ex was such a pleasant surprise when she first showcased it. She skated with so much confidence and energy- she looked like she was having so much fun as well! Honestly, the possibilities are endless. I think Alina is a really versatile skater and I sort of hope she doesn’t do 2 warhorses next season. Of course, if she wants to skate to such pieces, I completely support that. And I don’t have anything bad to say about her current programs, despite the controversy they inspire in this thread. I can see why the transitions might not be everyone’s cup of tea but personally my opinions lie more on the neutral side.

My thought about her current program for the FS is that it doesnt have any places for rest. It’s very fast throughout and with all the transitions I wonder if she would have been better off with a program that incorporated some slower sections to give her a breather.

Russian Junior Figure Skating Championships

Perm is on Yekaterinburg Standard Time = GMT +5, Moscow +2

Perm, a small city (1M, half the size of Minsk), established in the 16th century, situated on the Europe side of the Urals, in the foothills, surrounded by taiga and on the banks of a mighty river, the Kama. The Trans-Siberian Railway stops here. It was named Molotov for a while last century. It was a closed city during the Cold War years. Those interested in geology may know that the Permian era was named after Perm (because of the local rock strata).

My life today has been enriched in a way I'd never have dreamed.

That's why I have to correct the first quote a little bit. It means something to me as I was born in Perm and lived there until 16 y.o. before moving to Moscow. I remember that one of my essays in English class started with: "Perm is my native town..."

1 million people can hardly be named as "small city". In fact, it is 14th largest city in Russia, much bigger than Saransk where Rusnats happenned this year.

It was founded in 1723 by the decree of Peter the Great. This is actually another quote from my school essay that I already mentioned., So, it was in the 18th century.

The rest of the information is correct.

I really love the random history facts in this thread. I’m learning a lot from here!

Can I just quit my school’s history classes and get my education from the Russian Ladies thread instead?

No it isn't.

Firstly, some people may be getting confused between Krasnodar and Krasnoyarsk. Sofya is from Krasnoyarsk, which is 5000+ km away from Ossetia and Dagestan. Krasnoyarsk is as far from Ossetia as New York is from central Brazil. There is absolutely no proximal connection between Sofya and the Kavkas.

Secondly, a large chunk of Russian genealogy got disrupted when 27 million Russians lost their lives in '43-44, defeating fascism. So it is always tenuous, to say the least, to draw connections between "surname" etymology and genealogy with any faith.

Just wanted to add: Of course, that number included many Belarusians (bellorussians, then), Ukrainians, and people from other SSRs of the time.

Well, just because she is from Krasnoyarsk doesn't mean her ancestors couldn't been from Ossetia. We won't know.
