Great job in the FS by the Russian men overall, despite losing three spots, I’m proud of all of them! (Now I can go watch my other favorites at Worlds, Piper and Paul, whom I sadly had to sacrifice watching live in order to be able to get up in time to watch the men — it was tough this week being on east coast time ).

Who are the skaters turning seniors next year?

Kolyada needs to sort out his inconsistencies.

Samarin needs to sort out his Long program layout. its borderline stupid why he doesnt repeat the 4Lz when its the most consistent jump and doesnt do 4F when he does it at the SP.

The rest need to up their jump content and hope for decent consistency.
Savosin is aging out. And he is the only current junior with a senior GP spot. I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

It's a pity that Erokhov ended up without any spots (he turned senior this season but virtually didn't compete). Kovtun, who has spots, is likely retired.

Gumennik's job is to have a good enough next season, preferably with Senior Bs, to earn spots for 2020-2021 so he can turn senior at 18.

Whoah, Lazukin, that’s frigging amazing to end in top ten on a drop of a hat... whoah.

See, that's what three spots are for. For a young/unknown skater to go and end up making a comparative splash. But this season it was a hard job to keep them with all of Kolyada's and Aliev's problems.

The did fantastic and redeemed themselves well.

It's a shame because the way the long played out they could have kept the 3 spots if they had performed in the short as they are capable of, but unfortunately terrible one night and brilliant the next is what they are. One day it will come!

And yet Kolyada was the best of the Russian team and of the European men. So, after this bad whole season, his bad health which didn't let him improve and the problems with the boots shortly at the end of season, he is still the best. Think about it. To bring the spots is not only his job. Samarin din't shown his whole potential and for all the hype here on forum of Lazukin being better than Kolyada, i have also seen nothing as such.

I really wish the federation will take time and think how Kolyada's performance can be improved, what can they offer him in support and also for Kolyada to think what he wants for the next years. I believe it is time to change his team. I don't think Valentina can improve him much and he needs badly to keep improving his 4S and 4Lutz to play with the big boys. Also a fresh take on his skating would do him good, he was all his skating live with Valentina, he needs new perspectives. The problem is to find a coach suited to his independent and shy personality. In Russia Mishin doesn't like too much independent spirits and also is not good with artistic skaters, Eteri is also not very suited for independent adult male skaters, Buyanova - just NO.... Frankly i see only Orser being suited - look what he did with Jason Brown! But i don't think Russian fed to be smart enough to invest such money, sigh...

Do they treat the men differently then the women? Why would they let Evgenia go to Canada, or anywhere else, but not Mikhail? Or is she paying herself?

The coach he most frequently gets "sent" to is Raf, especially considering that he's already been there. But there is he question of money, of course.

Yeah this was a very good competition for him, though i find Eurosport comments on him spot on: great technique on the quad toe, but not the same on the axel (which is a bit surprising, all Mishin skaters always have textbook axels), he needs to improve on projection to engage the audience, and most importantly he needs to build stamina cause he always looks tired by the end of his free programs, and that could give him the strenght to put more difficult elements in the second half like a 3-3 for instance or a second 3A.

But he can work from here: he did fairly well at Nationals so he will get the GP spots next season, Mishin believes in him and he doesn't have other senior men to send at the main competitions.

Kolyada could have medalled here with a clean SP, while Samarin has a bit of a Kovtun syndrome (one good program and the other is terrible) which really hurts his scores because he also usually doesn't have great components.

I hope Lazukin's financial problems are resolved and he doesn't have to spend tutoring kids just to make ends meet and concentrate on figure skating.

Lazukin has Mishin's syndrom. Good technique and bad empty programs. Petrov is in the same boat, and even Liza (take the 3A from her and pufff is her chance to be in the top). The programs of Mishin's students are not suited for the modern era. Lazukin has none charisma to support him where his non existing choreography and reduced natural artistic talent could not. He is a reliable skater, but i don't see him taking world medals. BUt he is a hard worker so he will have the chance to get some results in the next years.

 Gorshkov called Samarin a "Euros and Worlds debutant". Really, the Fed, how short is your memory when it suits you?

well like always ... russian men can't do two great programs in a row... they have to choose Sp or LP .... but why ??? :tantrum:

Great two programs from Lazukin ... I wasn't expecting that

I have not had the chance to see it yet (I slept in), but I am looking forward to it.

i wonder who will got the CoR host spot. Kolyada, Lazukin, Samarin, Aliev, Kovtun and Voronov wont have probles getting 2 GP. Savosin also guaranteed 1 by his WS. Shulepov might get 1 since his SB is not far off top 24. Who else?
