I've agreed to try doing some play by play for Dance this season. Now given that I have yet to make it from the area where you put on skates to the actual rink itself without causing grievous bodily injury (mostly to myself!), I find this hilarious and a sterling example of Major Irony, but I think the idea of pbp is a very good one. And I promise to do my best. If nothing else, you get to see A Very Very Very Very Very Steep Learning Curve in Action!

I wanted to post a few links for people who may occasionally like to watch ID events casually, for those who would like to but are baffled by it, or want to learn more. If this is not you, Mr and Ms Expert, please feel free to skip ahead or file your nails or make me some breakfast (I'm particularly fond of omelettes, blueberry pancakes and bacon [hint, hint]).

Today's Event is the Rhythm Method. I mean Rhythm Dance. (LOL, sorry but the joke is so easy who could resist making it? Not me!) This was formally known as the Short Dance. Ice dancing is at heart, traditional ballroom dancing on ice. There are a number of set patterns in ballroom that have been incorporated into ID. There is a good reason for this. These are the fundamental patterns learned by every couple, from the wee novice to the most experienced of seniors. The RD gives both judges and audience a chance to compare teams directly. If you want to know why team So and So placed ahead of Your Particular Favorite, an excellent way to do so is to compare both teams's required patterns in the RD.

The RD always has a set pattern, done to a specific rhythm. This year the juniors are skating to the Argentine Tango. Bill Neal has helpfully provided, in another post on here, a lovely link explaining the steps of the AT and the Infamous Key Points here:
https://www.isu.org/inside-single-pa...s-2018-19/file

Key points are part of the required dance pattern. They must be skated on a specific step, to a specific beat. Hitting or missing a key point can be crucial to a team's overall placement in the RD. Given that my internet connection is somewhere in the area of two tin cans and a piece of string, I'm not going to attempt to identify them in the pbp as they happen, but the protocols will tell you if the team hit their KPs.

The USFSA has provided a nifty chart explaining the required elements of the RD here. There are five required elements for the Junior RD: two sections of Argentine tango, a short lift, one set of twizzles, and a step sequence. The step sequence can be either Midline (aka in a straight line), diagonal (from one rink corner to its diagonal opposite) or circular. The sequence may be done in hold, not touching, or a combination of both. More info can be found here:
http://www.usfsa.org/content/2018-19...RD Chart.pdf

So, with that in mind, let's give this baby a whirl! As I said, Mr Tech I'm not, so if I miss something or screw something up, by all means feel free to point this out. I think the more we know about ID, the more enjoyable it becomes for everyone.

The Live stream is available here:

Yuzhu GUO / Pengkun ZHAO
Country: China
Music: Tango: Fragile Realita
Choreography by: Xun Zheng
Costumes: She in a lovely deep blue tango dress with sequined choker neckline; he in deep blue sparkly shirt and black shirt

Required Elements:

Twizzles with jump entry
AT Pattern - done at such a midtempo it felt almost waltzy; missed most of their key points (Thanks Ted!)
Curve Lift - a bit shaky on his part, doesn't hold a continual edge into the curve. Level 3
ML St Sequence - Both in hold and not touching. Still a bit waltzy for me taste

All very slow. I'd like to see them waltz. They seem like they'd have a good feel for it.

Score: 43.70 (23.41 TES, 20.29 PCS)

Wow! Seeing how empty the arena is is making me even sadder that I'm not there providing some support.

Has it been like this for the previous Junior GP's? I don't know because I was on holidays during the first two, and since I came home I've been focussing on Senior B's.

It must be demoralising for the skaters...

Hi there:ghug:

I think it was like this before, especially during weekdays and before noon - it was the same at Nepela in Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays have usually bigger frequency:)

Choreography by: Nikola Visnova, Barbora Silna, Eliska Lukonchik
Costumes: One armed black dress with shredded skirt for her; basic black tango duds for hi (with man cleavage)

Required Elements:

Straight Line Lift with deep knee bend entry and jump entry. Level 4.
AT Pattern - she has cleaner and clearer steps than him. They need to skate this out more. Better this time out.
Twizzles - Decent. Level 4 for both.
Midline Step Seq - NT with knee slides Level 2

Really going for that post mod feel in the second half. It was a much better outting this time.

I love this first music for the Ukranians! Loved dancing to it. Zitarossa by Bajofondo.

I was watching the Nepela on TV, and I couldn't get over how few spectators there were on the first couple of days. But there are far fewer here.

On the plus side, there was a far bigger turn out on the Saturday, so hopefully it will be the same here.

And thank you for showing that the quote notification is working now that it's returned and I've switched it on! I really missed it!

Hello you lovely people, just tuned in. Extra sour jelly beans and figure skating is some comfort to an upsetting day.

A very nice RD from Ukrainians, good musicality, nice flow and lines. They could use a bit more speed and sharpness, especially in pattern, but a very good, grown-up image. The first half was indeed greatly going to Bajofondo piece, agree with pearly :). And love the dress from Maria!

Maria GOLUBTSOVA / Kirill BELOBROV
Country: Ukraine
Music: Zitarossa" performed by Bajofondo; Tango: "Sabelo" performed by Bajofondo
Choreography by: Maria Tumanovskaia-Chaika, Anaida Koniar
Costumes: Maroon tango dress with side black panel for her. Black suit, white shirt, marroon sweater for him

Required Elements:

Twizzles - Nice held edge of out of first set; both at level 4
AT Pattern - Best extension yet but still need speed. Missed most of their key points
NT ST Seq with a nice split in there for her; level 2
Rotational lift with one foot turn Level 4

They have VERY SIMPLE entries and exits into and out of their elements. They could up that. But nicely done.

Score: 54.70 (29.67 TES, 25.03)

Really liked the Ukrainians. They deservedly went into the lead.

Just going back to the previous Czech partnership, you have a lot to live up to when you include a piece of music that was famously used by Zhiganshina / Gaszi in the past. They made that music their own. The Taschlers didn't.

There was actually pretty good attendance at the JGP in Kaunas... Ted was especially impressed with the organization of the local organizing committee, and commented about it a couple of times on the stream. There was also a good crowd in Canada too... but yes, these are more the exception to the rule.

Is that a man-bun or a short ponytail? I've taken off my glasses to remove my makeup so I can't tell.

Edit: Oh, ponytail.
