2018 Olympic Season: Men's Figure Skating

I'm wondering about their current form, especially Patrick's as he's been away from competition since Skate Canada. However, I don't think any of the skaters will compete at 4CC because both already won the title and their National schedules are too close to 4CC. They also need to prepare for Team Event as well. It's quite possible that both compete in both SP and FS for the Team Event. The jet lag and traveling distance will be also big problems for them unlike Boyang and Shoma, both of which live very close to South Korea.

Yes, realistically I think they won't show up at 4CC. This year it's still in January and time wise it's only one week after Europeans, but jet leg and everything surely will prevent them from going. They could go and stay in Asia until Pyeongchang, but I don't think so. It's ideal for Shoma though, because it's not too far and PC is practically next door, too.

Some quad progress occurred in Golden Spin of Zagreb last month. Daniel Grassl from Italy becomes the 9th person to do the 4Lz.

In summary thus far.

This season alone, there were 4 new skaters who successfully debuted their 4Lz (Kolyada, Hanyu, Samarin and Grassl). Together with Jin, Chen and Zhou, there are 7 active skaters with quadruple lutz. Still awaiting Aliev or Rippon to be the 10th person.

In contrast only,
four skaters have done 4F (Uno, Chen, Paniot and Zhou) and
four skaters have done 4Lo (Krasnozhon, Hanyu, Uno and Chen)

I thought Boyang is doing 4 Quads? Or did he toned it down after injury??

I think they mean the different types of quads skaters have in their repertoire/programs, not the number of them in their layout.

Yup, for most of them two quads are more consistent and get done regularly (ie usually in both programs), the others less regularly and only in FS. Jin has done 4Lo successfully in (international) competion once, the same with Hanyu's 4Lz, Chen has 3 4Lo's and Uno the same number of 4S's. Also Nathan's 4S does not get out too often - 6 times only.

Apart from Nathan (who has 80+ quads so far), all the others have some 110 quads done internationally and some 2/3 of them are 4T's (Hanyu 66, Uno 65, Jin 61, Chen 29). The second best jump varies a bit, for Hanyu it is the 4S (37), for Uno 4F (32) and Jin 4Lz (26). Nathan's 4F and 4Lz are at about the same level (22 and 23). 4Lo is obviously nr 3 jump for Hanyu and Uno, 4S for Jin.

Considering how many problems the younger men have with 4S (only Jin does it with any regularity), it is amazing that it does not get a higher BV than 4T.

Btw Kolyada is not included here, because he has been doing fewer quads than the others and when I did those stats over Xmas, I was interested in the highest quantities.

Just to clarify, the only time I remember Boyang jumping the 4Lo in a program was at 4CC last season and he fell on it (with a UR) so I'm trying to think in which international competition he landed it successfully?

It got recorded in the protocol as a 4Lo, that was the basic criteria. Sorry for the choice of adjective there.

Thank you. That makes sense if we're just going by attempt in protocol, not so much successful attempt. I was kind of wondering when Boyang might bring the 4Lo back again but he's actually trying to improve himself with what he has before bringing in more BV.

Thanks for the reminder. Will watch for Boyang's 4Lo in the next coming seasons.

Wow, you are so diligent in compiling these statistics. Thank you for your hard work. Please do post your findings after every Christmas in the future seasons.

Re: Vincent...anyone think he should work on his stamina more. I think that's one of the reasons he starts to underrotate. You can see him breathe really hard before his footwork in his long and after his short. None of the guys do that. They take a breathe but he's breathing hard.

interesting but this does not tell the tale about the quality of the skating, edge etc. Still interesting.

4S gets higher BV than 4T, by 0.2 point so it's not true.

Also Nathan's 4S does not get out too often - 6 times only.

Not too common, but I think at least 7 times. Three in 2015-2016 (1 at the JGPF, 2 at Nationals). Twice last season (4CCs and Nationals). Rostelecom and Nationals this season.

There are some guys, though, with the quad sal & not the quad toe. Dice Murakami, I think. And the sal has been more common for Max Aaron.
