Observation:

1. The skater with the highest combined score never wins the World Gold Medal.

2. The World Gold and Silver medallists are always within the top 3 in combined score.

One thing I notice, and I think it speaks to the importance of skaters getting the quads out early:

Samarin fell on two quad lutz attempts at Andrej Nepela. One of those was UR and one was a downgrade. Not too great, right?

At Skate Canada he landed two, one in combo, and both with positive GOE. The one in his LP was spectacular.

So, we may say think that skaters shouldn't be doing these attempts "until they're ready" but I think it must take some conditioning to do them in competition. They have to debut them at some time, and when they do, they're not always successful attempts. That doesn't mean those are "failures." It may mean it's just part of the process of gaining the confidence, learning from the errors, etc.

Thank you very much for these posts, it's really fun (and scary ) to see how much the 'new' quads count is going up! One thing though, because the poor guy is always forgotten: Vladislav Sezganov has landed the 4Lz as well, though I don't remember when exactly he did it (after Mroz, before Jin).

And because I've spammed so many other parts of the internet with it already, I'm still having this feeling that Yuzu might exchange his SP 4Lo for a 4Lz. The 4Lo was quite wobbly in his CoR practices, and after the one he did in the CoR SP I remember saying to my friends there "if he lands the 4Lz in the LP, I bet he includes it in the SP too". Of course a lot of people would say no, how could he, his Lutz is so bad and all, but it's Yuzu. I'm also sure he'd feel better with the higher BV.

OTOH, Nathan now said in an interview he'll stick to 5 quads in the LP. That would be smart IMO, as it is enough for him to be a contender and less risky regarding injuries. But that said, I wouldn't make any bets on that staying the plan depending on what happens in the season.

Buttom line: these guys are crazy. Awesome crazy, but crazy

I think there was no clarity about who was the favorite heading into 2010 and that Hanyu was the favorite heading into Sochi (as he had won the last head-to-head).

Scores are not enough to define an athlete as the favorite without a head-to-head, IMO. Scores may be enough to identify an athlete as a favorite, but not as the favorite. Often the World title is used to identify the favorite because that is frequently the last event with all the top athletes competing; however, more recent events often seem like better predictors. The GPF can be used to identify a favorite because it is often the last head-to-head between the top athletes, provided all the top athletes compete. The European Champion is usually a favorite during an Olympic season, but the European field is too limited to define the favorite unless all the favorites in a discipline are there. (Which won't be the case in any discipline this season, since either #1 or #2 from all four disciplines at Worlds aren't European).

what these numbers teach us: a guy like Patrick, or Yuzu... or Jin can score X at great competition and about X-50 at a bad one...

the X i proposed is not even as each skater has their own PB... however, there is such a great range in these skaters' scores that anything is possible...

Shoma and Nathan seem to be closer their X at great competition looks like X-25 ish at bad ones...

but still... the margin is there as well... as I am a dreamer and because I couldn't care less, if we take Patrick's best score at worlds of 295.16 it can be higher than any other skater when they have their X-? event

What are the chances??? extremely tiny but never say never and yes... I post this after the Skate Canada disaster.. just in case one is wondering

I agree. There is no telling who will peak at the right time. Impossible to say.

I think the US (especially Zhou, Aaron and Brown) and Russian skaters need to be at their absolute best = to peak already at their Nationals. Hanyu and Shoma on the other hand will make their National podium anyway, I believe.

Fernández needs to be almost ready at the Europeans.
