2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Kostornaia is so, so, so good. Her glide across the ice is astounding and makes my jaw drop. THIS is what skating at its purest should look like. The only other female who is that smooth and fast is Sakamoto. Ugh, I'm really rooting for her to win Worlds (and Olympics). She's the skating ideal, combining the best of both worlds.

I can't believe she made a Twilight program palpable. The girl's skating elevates programs.

I hope you don't mean Anna, because many with dance and music backgrounds on this forum have recognized what a rare and incredible gift Anna's musicality is. And if you want a reputable figure skater, Ted has been gushing about Anna's musicality in all her performances this season. He was talking about it before most of the international FS community even knew who she was. He even asked Anna about how she feels her programs and music in his interviews with her. But if you'd like to point out time stamps to where she wasn't musical in her skates, or where she wasn't emoting to suit the music and theme of her programs, I'm sure it would be a valuable contribution here!

Eh, Scherbakova is actually musical. Those dancing practices convinced me, much to my surprise. The thing is her musicality doesn't translate completely onto ice because she lacks the skating skills to fully express them. It's difficult to notice her musicality in movement unless you're purposefully looking out for it.

Completely agree, she and Kaori are the smoothest!!!

Oh come on...

Anna scored 181 and that is not enough for you...and yet you were endlessly complaining about Alyona scoring almost 90?
Anna and Sasha are humble and gracious but you missed someone there didnt you?

Exactly LMAO 😂😂😂
The endless whining about Aliona yesterday, all to accept Anna's 181 without hesitation is quite entertaining. Let's just say, it just shows that he/she obviously prefers one skater over the other.

Wait, what?

Guliakova not getting a GP event after 7th place at Nationals, that would be nonsense.

Also RusFed needs to be more clear on the procedure of that, cause last season Sakhanovich got a spot without even competing at nationals, so i think it's more about the performances at the challenger events, and if you look at those Tsibinova might get something.

For me and this is entirely related to the way i see figure skating and not RusFed opinion, you need to give the chances to the older ladies who finished in the top 10 here, to make the journey worth something, so Guliakova, Gubanova (and a third one maybe Shulskaya or Tsibinova) should get those spots Sotskova, Konstantinova, Sakhanovich had this season.

On that note when Davydov or Panova are going to get a skater competing seniors? you have these new coaches bringing results but they are always doomed to JGP competitions and then the skaters leave almost like it's all planned from the start.

Otherwise what's the point, you keep pushing the same coaching team over and over, out of 20 teams, all the money goes to the same one, that's not healthy competition, the other coaches will give up sooner rather than later. Not only that but you keep pushing younger generations, trashing the old ones.

At this rate in 2-3 years Ледниковый Период/Ice Age Kids will be senior Nationals in Russia.

Nationals have little to do with the senior Grand Prix. These skaters don't have a SB score because they didn't compete in at least a Challenger (because RusFed wasted spots and didn't assign them). Those who have some WS points are too low anyway.

The host spot at Rostelecom is an exception and one of them may get it.

I don't see how the likes of Anna, Alyona, Alina or Zhenya are less artistic than the men...say Nathan Chen or Kevin Aymoz for example?
Yuzu is more artistic than any of them but that's Yuzu...

Alina - just, no. Not funny. Zhenya - so-so, used to be gimmicky, not nearly as nice as others, but worlds better than Alina. I like her better since she switched to Orser, because now she's more focused on trying to achieve clean movements. Anna and Alyona - have talent, musical, and finally someone from Russia who could be just as pleasant to watch as Japanese & Canadian ones. Someone compared Alyona to Sakamoto - I agree, the talent is there.

Chen and Kevin - better, yes, for now. Last year's nationals for Chen, this year's GP for Kevin, wow. Raw passion, artistic abandon, focus on perfect beauty and painting a canvas for the audience. Yuzu - shining city upon a hill, THE one, for now.

Exactly. At least she feels the music, even if it doesn't yet always translate.

Guliaova and Tsibinova did Tallinn Trophy, Nugumanova finished 3rd at Warsaw Cup.

Tsibinova also won Golden Spin (juniors though)

according to the GS article from today, Sasha wants to learn a 4 loop and include it by the end of the season :eeking:

i'm not sure how i feel about this...i would rather see her clean up her current layout and get it consistent before adding more.

Do you mean quad loop?

In the translation of the interview that I read, it said that she wanted to do it at the end of the season, which I took to mean after competition has ended. Maybe the GS article just misinterpreted the translation, because that makes more sense to me. Sasha is ambitious but I think that even she would realize that trying to insert a 4lo right now wouldn't make any sense. If any Russian speakers have seen the actual interview, please tell us what she actually said/meant .

Based on this rumor and the current layout that she's doing - I don't think Trusova's goals are to win gold at the events but to go down in the record books as the 'first woman to land xyz'. I'm not saying she doesn't want to win but that she prioritizes the other over gold. If my assumption is correct - I say go for it, but in terms of attempting to win gold I don't think that's going to happen utilizing her current strategy. And I don't think her coaches are trying too much to dissuade her from it because they have 2 other skaters that are consistent in what they do that guarantees gold for Sambo.

I'm more concerned about her hips. That's a scary jump

Yes because one self proclaim expert on what good skating looks like should become standard. Alyona owes a lot of her fame because her skating is style reminiscent of she who must not be named arguably a much better version of that skater. Not much a fan of that skater honestly but I like Alyona. She just adds another version to classical that elevates it from just a cold and pretty movements exercise to something that connects with the audience.

Well, Sviridenko was the only male skater on RusNats to land 4Lo.

If Sasha succeeds in her quest, she will win her match against Wikipedia 4-1 or 4-2. Currently she leads 3-1, and she wants to be in a comfortable lead with landing her forth quad. May be some girl, not Sasha will do 4Ax, but not on next few years, likely.
