The last time she's been in GPF it was with Eteri, the last time she medal at RN it was with Eteri, the last time she won gold at any stage was with Eteri. She was lucky that someone got sick last year to get picked for the team. Plus at that worlds she lost silver from a skater which never won anything significant. I can get she is more happy where she is now, but I wouldn't say the results are great.
The last time she‘s qualified for the GPF she withdrew due to serious injury. And the last time we‘ve seen her compete with Eteri she was dragging her injured body through the jumps and left the ice, sobbing. Then, she had to take months off to heal her foot and back. And yet, she will never be able to do a biellmann spin again.
She lost the Worlds Silver last season to Tursynbaeva but where is she now? Missed the whole season due to a - surprise, surprise - very serious back injury. Where are Lil‘Bet‘s results this season? I‘d take a skater who doesn‘t win a whole lot over someone who‘s too injured to even compete. If Tursynbaeva is happy with her coaches - good for her. But I think it‘s obvious that there‘s more to the story than: “Eteri took on a mediocre skater and made her into the Vice World Champion.“ Because in its essence, this is the truth. But only as long as you ignore at what cost this might have been achieved.
Comparing the results Evgenia had with Eteri to those she has with Brian is a simple logical fallacy. Because the competition back then was simply different. Skating has changed a lot. Staying with Eteri wouldn‘t have magically provided Evgenia with golds. She would have fallen behind the new generation just as inevitably.
After all, Alina stayed with Eteri, she didn‘t win Gold this season - when the new seniors arrived - either, did she? It‘s not because she‘s not a great skater, it‘s because she doesn‘t have a quad or a 3A. And neither her - nor Evgenia - is 15 anymore, so learning one will take more time and involve more risks.
Evgenia hasn‘t landed a quad yet. No one knows if she ever will. But she‘s surrounded by a team of specialists. Some of them - like Ghislain - are sought after by many skaters because of their brilliance at teaching jumping technique. If Evgenia hasn‘t landed a quad yet, it‘s not because she‘s not trying or because her coaches are somehow too incompetent to help her. It‘s because it might be harder to learn a quad at a certain age, with an adult body, when you‘ve not trained ultra-c elements for your entire career. (like Liza has, for example)
If Evgenia doesn‘t have the results she used to have, it’s not because she‘s become a weaker skater or because she‘s not improving. It‘s because the competition has changed as have the requirements to stay competitive.
She was competing in a different era. Let’s not forget - she’s a generation before Alina. She‘s playing a catch-up game. Whether she will succeed? Who knows. But her coaches certainly aren‘t the problem.
Now, if she were to change to Plushenko and Rozanov, I would support her, of course. It is her life and she has every right to make her own decisions (as has Sasha btw) But I just don‘t see any need for it at this moment.
