2020-2021 Programs by Discipline

after Kevin Aymoz made it popular we can expect at least one every year

Actually, the first one to ever perform it was Jeremy Abbott, he tends to be a trend setter: in this shirt, land of all, and several others......

exogenesis III from Muse was first skated by the Kerrs, but wasn't widely popular until after he first skated it in 2012 and then again in 2014.

I think Jeff Buttle actually did an exhibition programme to In This Shirt before Jeremy, in 2012/13. However, unlike Jeremy, Jeff was already a pro skater by that time - perhaps Jeremy contributed more to popularise it amongst competitive skaters? The explosion of people In These Shirts definitely only happened after him.

Jeff skated it for one throwaway MWO event. And then quickly switched to Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor, Op. 20 by Alexander Scriabin for that season, which was more memorable. No one touched the piece until Jeremy skated it in 2017 and then it started flourishing in amateur programs: Aymoz, Hawayek/Baker, now Pulkinen and I know there were others.

It is pretty diffcult to find and show cause and effect in these circles, but I wonder about this interpretation a bit. Popular music can be accessed everywhere in the world these days even though I would think linguistic and even geographical preferences kind of apply.

Also, Jeremy had been skating pro for years when he used In This Shirt, had he not? Both of them used the song in Stars on Ice which is a biggish show and even gets televised, but just how much the shows inform choices of music in competetive circles, I don't know. I doubt that their influence would be huge, although YT does provide some access to these shows (both performances can be found there). Music used in show contexts does not necessarily get viewed as suitable for competitive programs - I remember reading that Nathan Chen felt Nemesis was felt more like a show song, but still decided to give it a go.

Moreover, I don't think either of these older guys particularly progressive in their choices of popular music (more so in modern or classical music), particularly in their pro careers - pretty standard middle of the road stuff when you look at the list. But in both cases of In This Shirt, there is the factor of choreographer. Jeffrey's version was choreographed by Linda Garneau, a dancer and choreographer from outside the FS world. In Jeremy's case there is a Team France connection, Benoit Richaud. It is not possible to show who came up with the song, but here I would almost go for outside influence.

Unlike Jeffrey and Jeremy, Kevin has a pretty strong track record for choosing somewhat alternative pop music for his programs - Imagine Dragons, Benjamin Clementine, Woodkid all before In This Shirt. He could very well have listened to The Irrepressibles long before choosing to skate it.

This would not be the first time Team France would have come up with sth different - Benjamin Clementine (with a strong French connection) was used by Florent Amodio and then Kevin after which Shae-Lynn picked it up for Nathan Chen. Woodkid (who is French btw) appears in a free dance by the then virtually unknown Papadakis/Cizeron in 2013-4 and was picked up Simon Hocquaux, a French skater for his last junior SP in 2014-5. And then a bit later by Kevin and then Nathan Chen. Once an unusual piece of music has a proven good track record in competition, it tends to get repeated.

Uhm yeah ok...you totally missed my point. Jeff used it for one pro competition. And also, Jeremy has been using and has always used different out of the box and also alt pop esp for exhibitions during amateur (several including Muse which was his idea and he choreographed himself) and pro career, so wrong on that point too. But just agree to disagree with me and we'll move on.

I guess that depends how you define out of the box and unsual ;-) In my books most of Jeremy's stuff is pretty normal hit pop, middle of the road popular music.

I also just realized that one of the very few music discoveries I have ever gotten from FS is probably because of Benoit Richaud. He was responsible for Myslivečková-Csolley's 2016-7 free dance which involved pieces by Ibrahim Maalouf, a not at all well-known French jazz musician. Loved the music and have since become at least a minor Maalouf fan. I also remember wondering how on earth did those guys ever know about somebody like that. But I could imagine it was Benoit after all...

On the actual thread topic, a bit sad about Billie Eilish for Alena, but hope it does not involve too much of vocals in the end. Keeping the old programs seems like a good idea in general, esp now that the fall season for trying out and honing new programs seems to be under threat of not being there at all.
